Swiss Christmas Markets 2026: 77 markets — on 5 December 2026, 45 are open at once

Almost every overview lists places. Almost none says how long a market is actually open. That is exactly where planning fails: 54 days separate the first from the last market day of this season, yet not a single market runs the whole way through. We checked 81 Swiss Christmas markets one by one at the organiser's own source — start, end, opening hours and closure days; 77 of them have already fixed their 2026 dates.

Key takeaway
The Swiss Christmas market season 2026 runs from 18 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Within that window, 77 markets are open across 26 cantons — 1105 market days in total. The busiest day is 5 December 2026: that day, 45 of the 77 markets are open at the same time. There is no nationwide date; every market sets its own dates and hours.

🗓️ When is the Swiss Christmas market season in 2026?

The verified Swiss Christmas markets of 2026 run from 18 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. There is no shared opening or closing date — the span is 54 calendar days.

«Christmas markets open in late November» is the most convenient half-truth of Advent. In reality the earliest market in this analysis opens on 18 November 2026 — more than two weeks before the first Sunday of Advent — and the last one closes on 10 January 2027, that is, after Christmas. In between, there are 54 calendar days on which something is constantly starting and ending. To visit a market you therefore do not need its date, you need its date range — and that is precisely what almost every list omits. We read it for every entry at the organiser's own source, together with the opening hours and, where they exist, the closure days in the middle of the run. If you are planning the whole of Advent, the run-up is in our turnip lantern parade calendar and the middle in candle dipping.

The figure no date list contains

For every calendar day of the season we counted how many markets in the calendar run at the same time. The result is the ConvivaPlus density day: on 5 December 2026, 45 of the 77 markets are open simultaneously — more than on any other day of the season. Anyone planning a trip that should include a Christmas market has the widest choice of the year on that date. And assuming this holds for the rest of Advent is a mistake: the Winterland Locarno runs for 49 days, the market in Steinhausen for exactly one day — same season, two entirely different opportunities.

🗺️ Where the markets are

66 municipalities in 26 cantons, and the density follows the big railway stations, not the map: Zurich and Bern together hold more markets than half of French-speaking Switzerland.

The darker the canton, the more markets. Each new market darkens its canton — we add it as soon as its dates are published.

Advent markets Switzerland: the markets with Advent in their name

7 markets in 7 cantons carry the word Advent in their own name.

Looking for an Advent market? Here they are, with dates and canton pages. In the market calendar above they appear alongside all the others.

🧭 The five planning traps that cost you the trip

The problem is not the place, it is the calendar. Five patterns recur throughout the verified data — and none of the five can be read off an ordinary market listing.

  1. 1
A region's best-known market is often its latestThe Lozärner Wiehnachtsmärt on Franziskanerplatz — named by «Time Out» among the ten most beautiful in Europe — only opens on 3 December. By then Zurich, Zug, Bern and Winterthur have been running for two weeks. Anyone travelling to Lucerne in late November will find nothing at all on Franziskanerplatz; the Lucerne answer for those weeks is called Inseli-Park.
  2. 2
Closure days in the middle of the runThe Christkindlimärt in Rapperswil-Jona is advertised as «3 to 20 December», yet it does not take place on 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16 December. Five days in the heart of the stated range on which the old town is empty. No date-range field in the world shows this — with us it sits in the entry's notes.
  3. 3
The final day is not the same everywhereThe majority close on 23 December, 13 markets run through to Christmas Eve, and 5 go beyond. In Basel even two squares in the same city differ: on 23 December, Barfüsserplatz closes at 8 pm, Münsterplatz already at 6 pm.
  4. 4
Two markets in one town are not the same marketChur has two Christmas markets run by two associations that start on the same day — one is over after two days, the other runs until 23 December. Zurich has four, Bern three, Basel two, Winterthur two and Lucerne two, each with its own dates. The name of the town tells you nothing about opening.
  5. 5
The opening hours do not cover the whole marketIn Zug, only half the site is open Monday to Friday between 11.30 am and 4 pm. At Zurich main station the non-food stalls close an hour before the food stalls, and those before the bars. If you are planning a late evening, plan around the hospitality hours, not the market hours.

📜 Where the Swiss Christmas market comes from — and what sets it apart today

The pre-Christmas market is a late medieval town market that brought together craft goods and winter supplies. What characterises the Swiss version today is not its age but who runs it: associations, cities and cantons operate side by side.

The breadth of that ownership is visible directly in the data. In Basel the canton itself publishes the opening hours down to the minute of the final day. In Bern a municipal market, an association market and the privately run Sternenmarkt on the Kleine Schanze sit alongside one another — the last of them entirely cashless. On Bern's Münsterplatz an admission rule has replaced a list of goods for nearly forty years: exhibitors must produce in their own workshop and make one-off pieces. In Schaffhausen the setting is the more than 800-year-old cloister of Allerheiligen, the largest in Switzerland. And in Einsiedeln the organiser publishes not only 2026 but the dates all the way to 2028. That is the real difference from the «Christmas market» cliché: not a standard, but 77 independent events that happen to overlap in time. Almost all of them are free — which places them in the same category as our 50+ days out under 20 francs.

🔍 What we still don't know — and why it says so here

Of 81 markets in the calendar, 4 have no confirmed date range for 2026 yet. We list them anyway — as open, not as dates.

On 8 September this paragraph said that nothing verifiable had been published in Ticino for the 2026/27 season, and that Bô Noël in Lausanne showed only the previous edition's summary. Four weeks later all three have published their own run — Locarno and Lugano go on into January 2027, Bô Noël in Lausanne until New Year's Eve. Had we filled in last year's dates back then, the list would have looked more complete — and guessed at exactly these spots. That is why every market shows whether its run is published, calculated from a fixed rule – in Appenzell, for instance, «every first Wednesday in December» – or still open: in Bellinzona the organiser announces the 2026/27 edition without naming a day yet. If you know a run: send us the link, not the date.

We invent no dates – we only list what is documented. Send us the link to the organiser's page, we check it and add the event. Report a date

🏆 The ConvivaPlus verdict

The ConvivaPlus verdict on the 2026 Christmas market season

77 verified date rangesBusiest day: 5 December 202654-day span4 still open
The 2026 season is not a period, it is a timetable. It begins more than two weeks before the first Sunday of Advent and ends after Christmas, and in between something is constantly opening and closing. Two figures decide whether a trip works, and neither of them is the name of the town: the concrete market's date range and its opening hours on the chosen weekday. Plan by place alone and you will most likely end up at a square that has not been set up yet, has already been dismantled, or is simply closed that day.

When we last checked: on 20 October 2026 — 81 markets, each read at the organiser's source; for 77, the 2026 dates are fixed. Is yours missing? Tell us — it goes in as soon as its dates are published.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • ◆The busiest day of the season is 5 December 2026. 45 of the 77 markets run simultaneously that day. On the first day of the season there was exactly one. That figure appears in no market overview — it can only be calculated if you hold the start AND end of every market.
  • ◆Central Switzerland's most famous market opens among the last. The Lozärner Wiehnachtsmärt on Franziskanerplatz only starts on 3 December — two weeks after Zurich, Zug and Bern. Anyone visiting Lucerne in late November has to fall back on the Inseli-Park.
  • ◆Rapperswil-Jona has five closure days in the middle of its run. The Christkindlimärt is advertised as «3 to 20 December» but does not take place on 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16 December. Arrive on one of those days and you are standing in an empty old town.
  • ◆In Basel, two squares in the same city close two hours apart. On 23 December 2026 Barfüsserplatz finishes at 8 pm, Münsterplatz already at 6 pm — officially published by the canton, yet almost never quoted.
  • ◆One organiser is already publishing the 2028 season. The Einsiedeln Christmas market lists, alongside 2026, both 26 November to 5 December 2027 and 1 to 10 December 2028. No other market on the list reaches beyond the current season.
  • ◆Zurich's main station market is no longer called Christkindlimarkt. The station concourse is run under the name Polarzauber; the old christkindlimarkt.ch domain 301-redirects to a third-party event platform. And at Bellevue the «Wienachtsdorf» bowed out after ten years — in 2026 the square hosts Bellevue Noël.
