Marché de Noël de Gruyères: four weekends between the town gate and the castle
Gruyères appears in listings with nearly four weeks — and is shut on half of those days. The market runs across four weekends, and the hours follow not the clock but the daylight.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
Every run below is the one the organiser published for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing has been published yet, it says so.

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
The most striking finding about Gruyères concerns not the market but whether you can find it. On 14 September 2026 the official site noel-gruyeres.ch said of the 2026 dates, word for word: “Pas d'événements pour le moment.” No dates, no announcement, nothing. The dates were published by the Fribourg tourism organisation — that is, by a secondary source.
That is not a criticism of the organiser but information for your trip: search for “Marché de Noël Gruyères 2026” in the autumn, land on the official site, find nothing — and you may well conclude the market is cancelled. It is not. It is simply published somewhere other than where you look first. That is exactly what this overview is for.
Then the second peculiarity, which no run reveals: the opening hours follow the daylight. Friday only from 14:00, Saturday 10:00 to 20:00, Sunday finishing at 18:00. In a car-free lane between the town gate and the castle, in December, at 800 metres above sea level, that is not convenience but logic: what stays open after dark also has the lighting for it. 12 of 24 calendar days — the rest is castle without market.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
In Gruyères the weekend decides, not the week — and Sunday evening does not exist.
- 1Friday to Sunday only, across four weekendsOpen on 12 days: 27–29 November, then 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20 December. Between the weekends the market is closed. The run 27 Nov–20 Dec 2026 is the bracket, not the operation.
- 2Friday only starts in the afternoonFriday 14:00–20:00 — six hours. Saturday has ten (10:00–20:00), Sunday eight (10:00–18:00). Plan for a Friday morning and you plan around a closed market.
- 3Sunday ends at 18:00Two hours earlier than Saturday. In Advent that means Sunday ends shortly after the lighting reaches its best effect. If you want the lights, come on Friday or Saturday.
- 4Mind the secondary source before you set offOur dates come from fribourg.ch, source read on 14 September 2026. The organiser's site noel-gruyeres.ch carried no 2026 calendar at that point. For a long journey, check both shortly beforehand.
📊 Season comparison with nearby markets
Where this market sits in the season — and which neighbour has already closed when it opens.
Each bar is a documented run. Dark = this market, pale = the nearest ones. Read only a single date and you miss that a neighbouring market has already closed when this one opens.
🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 34 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Gruyères starts early — on 27 November 2026, alongside a series of other markets all serving the first Advent weekend.
In the canton of Fribourg the overview lists three markets, built in this order: Gruyères opens the season across four weekends, Bulle follows with five days in a row on a single square, and Murten closes with three days. Gruyères and Bulle are barely half an hour apart and overlap on the first December weekend.

Usually only that it has not been updated yet. In Gruyères it said “Pas d'événements pour le moment” in September while the Fribourg tourism organisation had already published four weekends. An organiser's silence is not a cancellation notice — but it is a reason to name the secondary source.
Every verified Christmas market →Three in this overview: Gruyères across four weekends in the medieval old town, Bulle for five days in a row on a square and Murten on a single weekend under the arcades.
Christmas markets in the canton of Fribourg →Because Sunday evening draws no crowd and dismantling has to start on Monday. In Gruyères the setting adds to it: a lane at altitude where it gets dark and cold early. Two hours less there is not a saving but experience.
The ConvivaPlus verdict
As a setting, Gruyères is hard to beat: a car-free medieval lane between the town gate and the castle, over 40 craft stalls, December. If you want to visit exactly one Fribourg market and put atmosphere above convenience, come here — ideally on a Friday afternoon, when it is empty and already getting dark.
Two caveats belong to that. First, the market only runs on four weekends; midweek you stand in a beautiful, empty lane. Second, the dates come not from the organiser but from the tourist office — for a long journey the second look is worth it. If you want reliability and short distances, Bulle serves you better.
Freshness note: Run, opening days, hours, venue, organiser and the figure “over 40 craftspeople” come from fribourg.ch, the Fribourg tourism organisation, source read on 14 September 2026. The organiser's site noel-gruyeres.ch carried no 2026 calendar at that date (“Pas d'événements pour le moment”); we were therefore unable to cross-check the details there and say so explicitly.

- ◆Silence is not a cancellation — but it is information: the official Gruyères market site showed no event at all in September, while the tourist office had already published four weekends. Consult only the first source and you will believe a running market has been called off. That is exactly why we name for every entry WHERE the date comes from — and not only what it says.
- ◆The hours follow the light, not the clock: Friday only from 14:00, Sunday finishing at 18:00. In a lane at altitude in December that is not arbitrary but the only timetable that fits the place. Assume “10:00 to 20:00” because three days sound similar and you lose four hours on Friday and two on Sunday.
