Not on Bern's Waisenhausplatz: the Christmas market is followed on the same square by the year-end market and, in January, by the New Year market. No other place in this overview opens a NEW market after the 24th – the Winterland in Locarno does run until 6 January, but as a single continuous event. Exactly between the years, when everything else is shut, that is the whole difference.

The strongest reason for this square lies outside the Christmas period: from 28 December only two addresses remain in German-speaking Switzerland in this overview: this square with its own year-end and New Year markets, and the Märlistadt in Stein am Rhein, which runs straight through to 3 January.
