Bern Waisenhausplatz Christmas market: the only one that carries on into the new year
Everyone assumes the Christmas market season ends on 24 December. Not on Bern's Waisenhausplatz: the Christmas market is followed on the same square by the year-end market and, in January, by the New Year market. No other market in this overview does that – and between Christmas and New Year, when everything else is shut, that is the whole difference.

🔎 What sets this market apart from every other one
The one thing that sets this square apart from all the others appears in no Christmas market list, because it happens after Christmas: the Christmas market is followed on the same Waisenhausplatz by the year-end market from 28 to 31 December, and in the new year by the New Year market from 4 to 9 January. Of every market we read individually for this season, Bern is the only one with that sequel. After 24 December the overview holds only Bern's Sternenmarkt on the Kleine Schanze, and that one closes for good on 27 December. Between the years, when shops are closed and diaries are empty, that is not a detail. It is a reason.
The second point is an expectation this square regularly disappoints – and you can know it in advance. Waisenhausplatz carries mostly ordinary market goods. If you want craft work, Bern's address is Münsterplatz, where an admission rule applies: exhibitors must produce in their own workshop and make one-off pieces. Two squares, ten minutes apart, two completely different markets.
And an honest third: on 8 September 2026 the operator had not yet published the detailed hours for this edition – the site still showed the 2025 ones. So we do not carry them forward. A run published by the organiser is a different thing from an opening time we would have guessed from last year.

🎯 How to plan the visit without standing in an empty square
Waisenhausplatz is not the market for the last-minute present sprint; it is the market for the days when nothing else is on.
- 1Come between the yearsYear-end market 28–31 December 2026, New Year market 4–9 January 2027 – both on the same square. In exactly that window, Bern is the only address in this overview still offering anything at all.
- 2For craft work, go to MünsterplatzHere you get mostly ordinary market goods. The cathedral market a few lanes away requires its exhibitors to have their own workshop and to make one-off pieces. If you want both in one evening, plan the walk in.
- 3Check the hours on the dayThe run is published; the 2026 daily hours were not, as of 8 September. We deliberately do not carry last year's forward – have a quick look at the operator's page before you set off.
- 4Open on Christmas Eve tooThe Christmas market itself runs through 24 December – Bern belongs to the minority that still works the final day.
🗺️ Where this market sits in the season
Bern carries three markets in this overview that complement rather than compete: Waisenhausplatz (ordinary market goods), Münsterplatz (craft work under an admission rule) and the Sternenmarkt on the Kleine Schanze. The bar above shows how heavily they overlap in time – one evening is enough for two of them.
Nationally: the densest day of the 2026 season is 3 December 2026, when 20 of the 23 confirmed markets are open at once. The season runs from 18 November 2026 to 27 December 2026.

The strongest reason for this square lies outside the Christmas period: between the years and in early January it is unrivalled in this overview, because nothing else is running. If you have visitors over the holidays and are looking for something from 28 December, this is the only address.
During Advent itself it is honestly the pragmatic market, not the romantic one: ordinary goods, central, easy to reach. If you want craft work, walk the few lanes to Münsterplatz. If you need published times, note that they were still missing here for 2026.
Freshness note: The 2026 daily hours were not published as of 8 September 2026; the operator's page still showed the 2025 ones. Check on the day before you travel.

- ◆The season does not end here on the 24th: year-end market 28–31 December, New Year market 4–9 January – on the same square. No other market in the overview does this.
- ◆Two Bern squares, two assortments: Waisenhausplatz = ordinary goods, Münsterplatz = one-off workshop pieces. The disappointment only happens if you did not know beforehand.
- ◆Missing hours are a data point: the operator had not published the 2026 times on 8 September. We do not carry last year forward – better a gap than a guess.

Wüsset Dir was s Beschte isch?
