Montreux Christmas market: the only one that happens at two altitudes
Every other market in this overview takes place in one location. Not Montreux: the market is on the shore of Lake Geneva – but Father Christmas's workshop sits on the summit of the Rochers-de-Naye, and he himself crosses the sky above the town. That is not an advertising image; it is why children afterwards talk about Father Christmas and not about the stalls.

🔎 What sets this market apart from every other one
Of every market we read individually for this season, Montreux is the only one at two altitudes. Down by the lake stand the chalets; up on the summit of the Rochers-de-Naye sits Father Christmas's workshop. And in between, he flies: the Père Noël Volant crosses the sky above the town. No other market on this list sends a programme item through the air.
The second, unspectacular advantage is the one you actually notice on the day of travel: 200 metres from the station. For a market many people reach by crossing the country, that is the shortest final leg in the field – you step off the train and you are there. If you hesitate because a trip to Lake Geneva sounds like half a day, factor those two hundred metres in.
And one point that regularly causes confusion: Montreux Noël is not alone. The same organiser family runs Vevey Riviera Noël and Villeneuve Riviera Noël. Those are separate events in separate places with their own dates – reading «Riviera Noël» does not mean you have read Montreux.

🎯 How to plan the visit without standing in an empty square
Plan Montreux like a day trip with an altitude difference: the market below, the workshop above, the sky in between.
- 1Possible through Christmas EveThe market runs through 24 December – together with Geneva, Montreux is therefore the French-speaking address for the final day, when most German-speaking markets have already closed.
- 2200 metres from the stationThe shortest final leg of any open-air market in the overview. For a train journey from German-speaking Switzerland that is the difference between a day out and an expedition.
- 3Father Christmas is up, not downHis workshop is on the summit of the Rochers-de-Naye. If you are coming with children and want both – market and workshop – plan the day with the mountain ride, not just the quay.
- 4Vevey and Villeneuve are separate marketsThey belong to the same organiser family but have their own places and their own dates. If you are planning for «Riviera Noël», know which of the three you mean.
🗺️ Where this market sits in the season
The bar above shows Montreux as one of the longest stretches of the season, almost identical to Geneva – the two Lake Geneva markets together cover French-speaking Switzerland through Christmas Eve. If you want a late market day in the west, you have two addresses rather than one.
Nationally: the densest day of the 2026 season is 3 December 2026, when 21 of the 24 confirmed markets are open at once. The season spans 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.

Lausanne Christmas market →The ConvivaPlus verdict
With children this is the strongest address in French-speaking Switzerland in this overview: a Father Christmas flying over the lake and a workshop on a mountain summit beat any stall count. Add the shortest walk from a station of any open-air market – 200 metres, with or without a pushchair.
If you want craft work and quiet, this is the wrong place: Montreux Noël is a large, busy market on the water. For one-off workshop pieces the address is Bern's Münsterplatz; for a quiet setting, Einsiedeln.
Freshness note: Programme items such as the Père Noël Volant flights and the opening of the mountain workshop have their own times, set at short notice by the organiser. Run read on 8 September 2026 – check on the day before you travel.

- ◆Two altitudes, one market: chalets by the lake, workshop on the summit of the Rochers-de-Naye. Plan only the quay and you plan half of it.
- ◆200 metres is an argument: the shortest final leg of any open-air market – on a journey across the country that counts for more than any stall count.
- ◆«Riviera Noël» is three markets: Montreux, Vevey and Villeneuve belong to the same organiser family but have their own places and their own dates.
