Marché de Noël de Sion: the market that knows about 8 December

In most calendars 8 December is a Tuesday. In Valais it is a statutory holiday — and the Sion Christmas market gives it its own opening hours rather than letting it vanish under “weekday”.

Key takeaway
The Marché de Noël de Sion runs from 5 December 2026 to 23 December 2026 across two squares — Place du Midi and Espace des Remparts — for a total of 19 days. Open Monday to Thursday 14:00–19:00, Friday 14:00–21:00, Saturday 11:00–21:00 and Sunday 11:00–19:00. Two special days apply: the opening on 5 December (11:00–21:00) and the Immaculate Conception on 8 December (11:00–19:00) — a statutory holiday in Valais.

✨ Highlights of this market

What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.

8 December 2026 falls on a Tuesday. For a market with the rule “Monday to Thursday 14:00–19:00” that would settle it — except in Valais. There the Immaculate Conception is a statutory holiday, and the Sion market treats it accordingly: 11:00–19:00, that is, like a Sunday, three hours earlier than on an ordinary Tuesday.

It sounds like a trifle and it is the difference between an event that knows its canton and one that copies an opening rule. On 14 September 2026 we counted: two of 32 pages in this survey list 8 December separately — Sion and the Zug market on the Alpenquai. Both are in cantons where the day is a holiday. The remaining 30 do not, and in most cases they have no need to.

The second thing to know is in the location field: Sion has two squares, not one. The market spreads across Place du Midi and Espace des Remparts. See only the first and you judge the market small and leave before you have seen half of it — a mistake described explicitly in the comments under this page.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit

In Sion two things decide it: the weekday — and walking both squares.

  1. 1
Monday to Thursday is the short day14:00–19:00, that is five hours. Friday has seven (14:00–21:00), Saturday ten (11:00–21:00), Sunday eight (11:00–19:00). Come midweek and you have the least room.
  2. 2
8 December runs on Sunday hours11:00–19:00 instead of 14:00–19:00. The Immaculate Conception is a statutory holiday in Valais; on that Tuesday the market opens three hours earlier than usual.
  3. 3
The 5 December opening has its own hours11:00–21:00 — the only ten-hour day outside the Saturdays. If you want the opening, plan the first day, not the first weekend.
  4. 4
Two squares, not onePlace du Midi and Espace des Remparts. Both belong to the same market; walk only one and you have seen half. Of 32 pages in this survey, four carry more than one location — Sion is one of them.

🗺️ Nearby markets

The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 34 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, and the densest day is 5 December 2026 with 26 markets open at once. Sion starts on 5 December 2026 and is therefore already open on the densest day of the season.

In the canton of Valais the overview lists two markets, and they end on the same day: Sion starts a week earlier, Monthey joins on the third Advent weekend. Both are in the Lower Valais, about half an hour apart, and overlap for almost two weeks. This survey's other holiday-aware market is in Zug on the Alpenquai.

The ConvivaPlus verdict

19 daysSeparate hours on 8 DecemberTwo squares

For Valais, Sion is the long market of the season: nineteen days, two squares, and hours that take the cantonal holiday into account. If you are free on 8 December — in Valais that means most people — you find a market already open at eleven rather than only at two.

Midweek the margin is narrow: Monday to Thursday only five hours, ending at 19:00. If you want a long evening, come on Friday or Saturday. And if you only walk Place du Midi, know that half the market stands on the Espace des Remparts. For the second Valais address from 11 December: Monthey.

Freshness note: Run, all time windows, both venues and the special hours for 5 and 8 December come from mdnsion.ch, source read on 14 September 2026. ⛔ “The Immaculate Conception is a statutory holiday in Valais” is a statement about the law taken from the dataset which we have not verified here against the cantonal statute. The claim “two of 32 pages” was counted in the dataset on 14.09.2026. The organiser publishes no stall count.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • A holiday only two markets know about: 8 December 2026 falls on a Tuesday. Where the Immaculate Conception is a statutory holiday, half the canton is off work — and yet only two of 32 pages in this survey give it its own hours. Sion is one of them. The difference is three hours, and it decides whether a free morning is usable.
  • Two squares look like half a market: Sion spreads across Place du Midi and Espace des Remparts. Find only the first and you judge the market small and leave. In our survey four of 32 pages carry more than one location — and no overview writes it down, because “venue” in most listings is a single line.
