Appenzell Christkindlimarkt: the Sunday when the village shops are open

On a Swiss Sunday an open shop is not a given, it is an exception. In Appenzell it coincides with the Christkindlimarkt — and almost nobody writes that down.

Key takeaway
The Appenzell Christkindlimarkt takes place on the Postplatz. Appenzellerland Tourismus AI publishes no date but the rule «every second Sunday in December on the Postplatz»; worked out for 2026 that gives 13 December 2026 — a calculation, not evidence. The source names three things in one sentence: lit stars, incense wreaths and shops that are open that Sunday.

The tourism office names three things in one sentence: illuminated stars, incense wreaths – and shops that are open on that Sunday. Anyone visiting the market can therefore shop as well; that is what the source says, and for a Sunday event it is not a given.

✨ Highlights of this market

What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.

The third point is the one you read nowhere else. In Switzerland shops are closed on Sundays as a matter of principle; every opening is an exception under cantonal day-of-rest law. That Appenzellerland Tourismus names the open shops in the same sentence as the stars and the incense wreaths is therefore not decoration but the practical core of the day: you do not only look, you can buy — on a day when normally you cannot.

And that is exactly the difference from the other Appenzell event. The Chlöösler eleven days earlier is a Wednesday for shopping — there, open shops are simply what a weekday looks like. Here they are the exception, and they are why the square fills up on this one Sunday.

⛔ What we do not have: no confirmed date, no opening hours, no stall count. The source gives the rule and the three features, nothing more — read on 15 September 2026. 13 December 2026 is calculated from the rule and expressly unconfirmed. Anyone travelling in should check first; anyone living in the village knows anyway.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit

In Appenzell the Christkindlimarkt is less a market visit than a Sunday on which the village is exceptionally open.

  1. 1
The open shops are the differenceAppenzellerland Tourismus names them explicitly. On a Swiss Sunday that is an exception under cantonal day-of-rest law — and for many visitors the real reason to come on this day.
  2. 2
Sunday, not Wednesday — do not confuse it with the ChlööslerEleven days earlier comes the Chlöösler, a weekday market in the village centre. Both are «Christmas market Appenzell» to any search engine. Pick the wrong one and you arrive on a day when nothing is happening.
  3. 3
The date is calculated, not confirmedThe rule says «second Sunday in December on the Postplatz». For 2026 that gives 13 December 2026 — a calculation. Before a longer journey, ask Appenzellerland Tourismus. As of 15 September 2026.
  4. 4
One square, not a circuitThe market stands on the Postplatz, not across the whole village centre. The organiser publishes no stall count; we write none. Realistically this is an afternoon in one place, not a day's programme.

🗺️ Nearby markets

The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 39 markets with a documented run; the Appenzell Christkindlimarkt is not among them, because its date is only calculated. The season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.

In the same village, eleven days earlier, comes the Chlöösler. With confirmed dates, Appenzellerland offers the Herisau Christchindlimarkt at the Ebnet and, twelve minutes away by train, the Sternenstadt in St Gallen. If you are spending the Sunday in the village anyway, pair it with a walk — the market alone does not fill a day.

SundayShops openDate calculated

For a December Sunday in eastern Switzerland this market has an argument no other one has: you can shop. The tourism organisation names the open shops in the same breath as the stars, and in a country where Sunday is closed, that is precisely what fills the square.

As a full-day destination it does not hold: one square, no published stall count, no opening hours and no confirmed date. If you need certainty, take Herisau or St Gallen.

Freshness note: Rule, location and the three features come from Appenzellerland Tourismus AI (appenzell.ch), read on 15 September 2026. ⛔ The organiser publishes NO date for 2026; 13 December 2026 is calculated from the rule and unconfirmed. Opening hours and stall count are not published. ⛔ Which shops actually open that Sunday is not stated at the source — it says only that shops are open.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • The most important detail sits in the subordinate clause: stars and incense wreaths exist in some form at every market. Open shops on a Swiss Sunday exist almost nowhere — that is an exception under cantonal law and, for many, the actual reason to come. The source names all three in one sentence without ranking them. Copy a source without weighing it and you pass on the decisive fact in third place.
  • Two events a search engine merges: «Christmas market Appenzell» hits the Wednesday Chlöösler and the Sunday Christkindlimarkt equally — eleven days and two entirely different purposes apart. To a search engine they are the same place. To someone travelling in they are the difference between a full square and an empty one.
