Winterthur Christmas market: the most reliable one in the overview
Most Christmas markets come with a catch: closed days, a narrow window, a weekday when nothing happens. Winterthur has none. The market on Neumarkt runs for weeks on end, all seven days of the week, for the 29th time – it is the market you can simply visit without checking anything.

🔎 What sets this market apart from every other one
This market's most interesting property is one you would not normally mention: it has no exceptions. No closed days mid-run, no blocks, no weekday when it opens later, no square that shuts earlier. 28 days straight, seven days out of seven. In this overview that is the exception, not the rule: in Rapperswil-Jona five days fall out mid-run; in Zurich, Werdmühleplatz does not open until 16:00 on four days out of seven; and in Basel two squares close two hours apart on the final day.
The price is a gap, and we write it down rather than fill it: the organiser gives no closing time. What is published is «daily from 11:00 until the later evening hours», plus the note that food and drink stay open longer. For a market that is otherwise reliable in every respect, that is the one blurry figure – and an invented time would be worse than the gap.
What carries the rest is routine in the best sense: 2026 is the 29th edition. A market that has stood in the same old town every year for nearly three decades has nothing to prove to anyone – and that is exactly why you can visit it unprepared when an evening frees up.

🎯 How to plan the visit without standing in an empty square
At Winterthur there is almost nothing to plan – and that is exactly the point. Three things are still worth knowing.
- 1Any weekday worksOpen all seven days from 11:00. If you suddenly have time midweek, there is nothing to look up here – unlike Werdmühleplatz or Rapperswil-Jona.
- 2You cannot rely on the closing timeThe organiser publishes only «until the later evening hours». If you are coming with children and need a fixed end, plan for the afternoon or early evening instead.
- 3Food closes after the marketThat is explicitly published. If you want to linger after the walk-round you can – but the stalls will already be shut.
- 4Closed on 24 DecemberThe market ends on 23 December. For Christmas Eve you will need one of the few markets still running then.
🗺️ Where this market sits in the season
The bar above shows Winterthur as one of the longest continuous stretches of the season – and genuinely continuous, without the gaps other lanes hide only because a bar chart cannot show them. In canton Zurich it is therefore the most pragmatic market.
Nationally: the densest day of the 2026 season is 3 December 2026, when 20 of the 23 confirmed markets are open at once. The season spans 18 November 2026 to 27 December 2026.

If reliability is what counts, this is the market: 28 days straight, seven days out of seven, no blocks, no special cases. If an evening frees up midweek and you do not want to look up whether anything is on today, come here – and from Zurich you are there quickly.
What does not set it apart is a distinctive draw: there is no light choreography as in St Gallen, no admission rule as on Bern's Münsterplatz, and no timetabled programme. Winterthur wins on dependability – and this season that is rarer than any spectacle.
Freshness note: The closing time is not published; we reproduce the organiser's own wording. Read on 8 September 2026 – check again on the day before you travel.

- ◆Having no exception is the exception: seven days out of seven, no closed days, no blocks. Among the markets that publish their daily hours, that is a distinguishing feature in itself.
- ◆The missing closing time is a data point: what is published is «until the later evening hours». We invent no time – a wrong one would be worse than an open one.
- ◆Food closes after the market: explicitly published. Linger after the walk-round and you linger next to shuttered stalls.

Für üs isch das de Märt, wo eifach immer da isch. Kei Ruehtäg, kei Blöck, kei Sunderfäll. Me chan am Zischtig go, wenn s eim grad passt.
29. Mal – das merkt man. Die Altstadt kann das, es wirkt nichts aufgesetzt. Und man ist in zwanzig Minuten ab Zürich HB dort.
