St Nicholas in Switzerland 2026: where he arrives, where he is «chased» — and why almost never on 6 December

Zurich welcomes him behind a fairy-tale tram, Küssnacht «chases» him through darkened streets with a thousand cowbells, Stans carries him, and in Fribourg he rides a donkey to the cathedral. We checked 13 St Nicholas events in 9 cantons one by one at the source — and found that 6 December is rarely the day he comes.

Key takeaway
The verified St Nicholas events of 2026 run from Saturday, 28 November 2026 to Sunday, 6 December 2026. 5 of 7confirmed dates fall before 6 December. Zurich's Samichlaus parade is on 29 November 2026at 5 pm; Küssnacht's Klausjagen falls, under the society's rule, on Friday 4 December 2026 at 8.15 pm (calculated, not yet published).

When does St Nicholas come? Almost never on 6 December

St Nicholas Day is 6 December — but of 7 confirmed events in 2026, only 2 fall on that day. 5 come earlier, the first on Saturday, 28 November 2026.

In Switzerland, St Nicholas is called Samichlaus in the German-speaking part, Saint-Nicolas in the French-speaking part and San Nicolao in Ticino — and every local society sets its own day. The last Sunday evening of November in Zurich, the first Sunday of Advent in Näfels and Hergiswil, the first weekend of December in Fribourg, the eve of the saint's day in Stans and Unterägeri. And in Küssnacht, a rule only locals know: if 5 December falls on a weekend, the Klaus is chased on the Friday before. So «when does St Nicholas come?» has as many answers as there are societies — from Saturday, 28 November 2026 to Sunday, 6 December 2026.

The mistake that costs an evening

Almost everyone bets on 6 December. Wrong: in the ConvivaPlus survey, 5 of 7 confirmed events take place before it. Zurich's parade has been over for a week by the time most people start looking. Set off on 6 December, and in many villages you will find an empty pavement.

Arrival, parade, Chlausjagen: the ConvivaPlus St Nicholas Compass

The ConvivaPlus St Nicholas Compass filters by what you want to experience: 6 arrivals, 4 parades, 2 Chlausjagen and 1 procession out — plus start time (before or after 6 pm) and language region.

An arrival is close-up and calm: St Nicholas emerges from the forest, speaks to the children, hands out treats. A Chlausjagen is the opposite: whips crack, cowbells roar, horns call — and it starts when small children should be asleep. Both are called «St Nicholas»; the compass separates what a calendar cannot.

St Nicholas by canton: from Küssnacht to Paradiso

So far we cover 9 cantons in all three main language regions. The custom is at home across the country — as Samichlaus, Saint-Nicolas and San Nicolao.

The map shows how many verified events we list per canton — and therefore also where our survey is still thin. A pale canton does not mean St Nicholas doesn't come there; it means no society there has yet published a 2026 date we could check.

With children to St Nicholas: what to know before you go

The date is only half the plan. The three most common mistakes: the wrong form for the child's age, a missed registration — and assuming St Nicholas comes everywhere on 6 December.

  1. 1
Noise is a form, not an accidentAn arrival is calm, a Chlausjagen is not: in Küssnacht a mortar shot at 8.15 pm silences the crowd, the street lights go out and close to a thousand bell ringers pass by. For a toddler that's more fright than magic. The compass above separates the forms.
  2. 2
Children can walk in Zurich's parade — with registrationFrom age five, as little angels or dwarves pulling a float; registration closes on 6 November, costume fitting is in mid-November. Think of it in December and you'll be watching from the kerb.
  3. 3
Start times run from 17:00 to 20:15That's the real planning figure. Küssnacht only starts in full darkness. With small children, an early arrival in the next village is often a better evening than the famous spectacle.
  4. 4
In Unterägeri the afternoon belongs to the childrenFrom 3 to 5 pm, children up to the end of primary school go from house to house on their own with their «Chlausesel», a carved wooden donkey, calling «Holi holi hüü, dä Chlaus isch doo!». Parents stay at home — so other children don't find empty houses.
  5. 5
Take public transportIn Fribourg, public transport in zones 10 and 11 is free on the Saturday of the Saint-Nicolas. In Küssnacht up to 30,000 people line the darkened streets. A parking space nearby is an illusion on both evenings.
  6. 6
Calculated is not confirmedWhere a society only states its rule, we calculate the date and label it as calculated. A look at the linked source in early December saves a trip to an evening that has moved.

Why chase St Nicholas? A custom Zug tried to ban in 1760

St Nicholas goes back to Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century bishop and patron of children and sailors. The noisy Chlausjagen of Central Switzerland is documented in the Ägerital valley in writings from the 16th century.

On 12 December 1760 the council of the town of Zug decreed that roaming about at night, ringing bells and «tumulting» on St Nicholas night was banned «on pain of the highest penalty». The people of the Ägerital ignored it — so says the chronicle of the Chlauseslä in Unterägeri. In 1897 the folklorist Anna Ithen wrote that the Klausjagen survived on a large scale «only in the Aegerithal». The reason was practical: gifts at St Nicholas used to be richer than at Christmas, and those with nothing collected them on the eve. Today in Küssnacht more than 1,500 men march with over 200 «Iffelen», illuminated mitres more than two and a half metres tall. In FribourgSt Nicholas is the city's patron and gives his speech in French and German. A week later, Geneva celebrates the Escalade.

Dates still open — and why they are listed anyway

Of 13 events surveyed, 6 have no published 2026 date yet. We list them anyway — as a rule or open, never as a date.

Many societies only publish their date in November. Küssnacht's Klausjagen is therefore listed as a rule: main procession on 5 December at 8.15 pm, or on the Friday before if the 5th falls on a weekend. In 2026 the 5th is a Saturday — hence 4 December 2026, calculated and expressly unconfirmed. Confirmed means the 2026 date is at the source, with the date we checked it. Open means the event happens every year but no date is published yet. Sometimes the gap is the news: Grindelwald Tourism lists «Saturday, 6 December 2026» — but 6 December 2026 is a Sunday. We noted the contradiction on the entry rather than guess either value.

🏆 The ConvivaPlus verdict

The ConvivaPlus verdict on the 2026 St Nicholas season

7 dates confirmed6 rule-based or open5 before 6 December9 cantons
St Nicholas is an underrated date in the Swiss Advent: everyone knows him, hardly anyone knows when he comes to their own village. The season starts earlier than you'd think, and it is made of forms that share nothing but the name — a quiet arrival at the edge of the woods and a Chlausjagen opened by a mortar shot are two different evenings. Only two things are reliable: the date your own society publishes, and the rules of the big customs, which can be calculated year after year.

Freshness note: This analysis is based on the events we found with a verifiable source up to early October 2026. Many societies only publish in November — the survey keeps growing until St Nicholas Day. It is not a complete census and does not claim to be.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • ◆6 December is a calendar myth. 5 of 7confirmed events take place before it. Look for the saint's day and you are often a week late.
  • ◆St Nicholas speaks two languages. In Fribourg he addresses the «children» of the city in French and German from the cathedral terrace.
  • ◆Küssnacht chases on a Friday in 2026.If 5 December falls on a weekend, the society's rule moves the Klausjagen to the Friday — this year 4 December 2026.
  • ◆In Stans, St Nicholas doesn't walk — he is carried through the village before returning to the forests.
  • ◆A ban from 1760 didn't work. Zug outlawed the din of St Nicholas night «on pain of the highest penalty». The Ägerital still does it.
