Sarnen Christmas market: over before Advent has even begun
Most Christmas markets start with Advent. This one is already finished — and not by accident, but by rule.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
Every run below is the one the organiser published for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing has been published yet, it says so.
Sarner Weihnachtsmarkt
rule, not confirmedWednesday, 25 November 2026 · rule, not confirmed — Findet jedes Jahr am Mittwoch vor dem ersten Advent statt (Gemeinde Sarnen)
- Organiser
- Sarner Fachgeschäfte (SFG)
Sarnen does not tie its market to a date but to the calendar: the Wednesday before the first Sunday of Advent, every year. It is therefore over before Advent even starts – and it is a weekday market, not a weekend event.

📋 Organiser notes

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
Almost every market in this overview begins in Advent or runs through it. Sarnen does the opposite: the market is on the Wednesday BEFORE the first Advent — it is packed away by the time the first candle is lit elsewhere.
That is rare. Of the 39 markets with a documented run, only two end before the first Advent in this survey: the Chur old town and Arbon, both in late November. ⛔ Sarnen expressly does not count there — its date is only calculated, and a calculation has no place in a statistic about what is documented.
In practice the rule has a consequence that catches people out every year: anyone thinking «I'll go to the Christmas market in December» has missed it before the thought occurs. The Sarnen market is a November fixture, and it is a weekday market — no weekend, no day out, but a Wednesday evening in the village, run by Sarnen's specialist shops.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
In Sarnen it is not the date that decides but the rule — and the rule puts the market in November rather than in Advent.
- 1Wednesday before the first Advent, not in DecemberThe municipality publishes the rule, not the date. For 2026 that gives 25 November 2026 — the first Advent falls on 29 November. Plan for December and you plan straight past this market.
- 2Car-free village centre, one squareThe market stands on the Dorfplatz in the car-free core. Everything in one place, no circuit, and no trouble with a pushchair — but equally not a programme that fills an evening.
- 3Run by Sarnen's specialist shopsThe organisers are the Sarner Fachgeschäfte (SFG), not the municipality, which only publishes. That explains the weekday: a shopkeepers' market sits where the shops are open anyway.
- 4Opening hours are not publishedNeither start nor end appears at the source, read on 15 September 2026. So no time appears here — for a single-evening event an estimated one would be especially costly.
🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 39 markets with a documented run; Sarnen is not among them, because its date is only calculated. The season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.
In central Switzerland the neighbours are close by: the Stanser Wiänachtsmärcht is ten minutes away by car and also has no 2026 date; the Altdorf Christkindlimarkt does. If you want weeks to choose from, go to Lucerne's Inseli-Park.

29 November 2026. The first Sunday of Advent is the fourth Sunday before 25 December and moves every year — which is exactly why events like the Sarnen market hang their rule on Advent rather than on a fixed date.
Swiss season calendar →Because they are run by the local shops rather than by an events company. A shopkeepers' market sits where the shops are open anyway — and that is not a Sunday. In Sarnen it is the Wednesday.
Every verified Christmas market →One each in this overview: Sarnen on the Dorfplatz and Stans on the Höfli-/Steinmättli-Areal. For both, the organiser has published no date for 2026 yet.
Christmas markets across Switzerland →The ConvivaPlus verdict
For people from Obwalden the market is a fixed point in the calendar, and the rule makes it reliable without anyone having to publish a date: Wednesday before the first Advent, every year, on the car-free square.
For everyone else it is hard to catch — it falls in November, on a weekday, with no published hours. If you are coming from further away and need certainty, take Altdorf with its confirmed date, or the Inseli-Park in Lucerne, which runs for weeks.
Freshness note: Rule, location and organisers come from the municipality of Sarnen (sarnen.ch), read on 15 September 2026. ⛔ It publishes NO date for 2026; 25 November 2026 is calculated from the rule (first Advent 2026 = 29 November) and expressly unconfirmed. Opening hours are not published. ⛔ Sarnen is deliberately excluded from the «ends before the first Advent» count — only entries with a confirmed date belong there.

- ◆A rule hung on the calendar is more stable than a date: «Wednesday before the first Advent» is correct every year without anyone having to maintain anything — whereas a published date needs annual care and goes stale exactly when nobody is looking. The price is that outsiders have to do the arithmetic. We do it for them and say that it is arithmetic.
- ◆The weekday gives away who is behind it: a Saturday market is made by a society or a town, a Wednesday one by the shops. In Sarnen it is the Sarner Fachgeschäfte — which is why the market falls on an evening when the shops are open anyway. Read the weekday and you already know what to expect.
