Christkindli Märt Willisau: twelve hours straight — the anti-after-work market

A Christmas market is almost everywhere an evening event. It opens at four in the afternoon, when people finish work, and closes at ten.

On 19 October 2026 we compared the three Lucerne entries in this overview: at Franziskanerplatz ten hours at most (food stalls 11:00–21:00, market stalls 11:00–20:00); in the Inseli park the organiser publishes no daily hours at all. Willisau therefore has the longest published market day in the Lucerne dataset.

In practice: you can come in the morning with children, while they are still willing — and return in the evening without them. At a market opening at four, that morning does not exist, and both visits have to fit into the same six hours. Willisau is the only event in the region whose day is long enough for two different visits.

Willisau falls on the first Advent weekend — exactly the window in which the most markets nationwide are open at once. The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 78 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 10 January 2027.

In the canton of Lucerne, Willisau is the country market beside two city ones: the Inseli park runs from November until just before Christmas, Franziskanerplatz joins from 3 December. Willisau instead sets down a single weekend — but with the longest days. The same weekend also sees Bremgarten in the neighbouring canton.
