Christkindli Märt Willisau: twelve hours straight — the anti-after-work market
Most Christmas markets only open in the late afternoon. Willisau opens at ten in the morning and closes at ten at night — for two days, twelve hours straight. That is not a detail: it is a different event.

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
A Christmas market is almost everywhere an evening event. It opens at four in the afternoon, when people finish work, and closes at ten. Willisau does it differently: ten in the morning until ten at night, on Friday and Saturday. Twelve hours.
On 14 September 2026 we compared the three Lucerne entries in this overview: at Franziskanerplatz ten hours at most (food stalls 11:00–21:00, market stalls 11:00–20:00); in the Inseli park the organiser publishes no daily hours at all. Willisau therefore has the longest published market day in the Lucerne dataset.
In practice: you can come in the morning with children, while they are still willing — and return in the evening without them. At a market opening at four, that morning does not exist, and both visits have to fit into the same six hours. Willisau is the only event in the region whose day is long enough for two different visits.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
In Willisau it is not the market that is big but the day — and that changes how you visit it.
- 1Friday and Saturday: twelve hours, 10:00–22:00The market is open continuously, not in two blocks. Use the morning and you have the old town almost to yourself; come in the evening and the same stalls are still there.
- 2Sunday finishes at 18:00Four hours shorter than the two previous days. Sunday is the family day with an early end — if you want the evening atmosphere, come on Friday or Saturday.
- 3With children, the morning is worth itAt ten the market is open but not yet full. In an old town lane that is the difference between pushing and strolling — and it is simply impossible at most neighbouring markets, which only open in the afternoon.
- 4The organiser's website carries an umlautThe official address contains an “ä” and technically resolves as punycode; typing it by hand easily lands you elsewhere. Our details come from the organiser's dates page, source read on 14 September 2026.

🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 34 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Willisau falls on the first Advent weekend — exactly the window in which the most markets nationwide are open at once.
In the canton of Lucerne, Willisau is the country market beside two city ones: the Inseli park runs from November until just before Christmas, Franziskanerplatz joins from 3 December. Willisau instead sets down a single weekend — but with the longest days. The same weekend also sees Bremgarten in the neighbouring canton.

Because they aim at the after-work crowd and stallholders work during the day. Willisau breaks with that on two of its three days: twelve hours straight. For families with small children the morning is often the only usable slot — and that is precisely the slot most markets do not offer.
Every verified Christmas market →Three in this overview: Willisau on one weekend with twelve-hour days, the Inseli park from November until just before Christmas and Franziskanerplatz from 3 December.
Christmas markets in the canton of Lucerne →Usually that the event is carried by an informal committee. For visitors it changes nothing; for us it does: we then name the market itself as organiser rather than invent an association the source does not mention.
The ConvivaPlus verdict
For families in the Lucerne hinterland and the southern Aargau, Willisau is the most practical market of the season — not for its size but for its hours. A market open at ten in the morning is visited quite differently with small children than one opening at four. And if you want to come back the same evening, you can.
For a day trip involving a long journey the market is small and the weekend short — three days and it is over. If you want a continuous market in the canton, head for the Inseli park, which runs 34 days in a row.
Freshness note: Run, hours and venue come from the Christkindli Märt Willisau dates page, source read on 14 September 2026. ⛔ No legal entity is named there; we list the market's own name as organiser. The claim “longest published market day in the Lucerne dataset” is counted across the three Lucerne entries recorded in this overview — it is not a statement about every Lucerne Christmas market.

- ◆Twelve hours change who can come: a market that only opens at four in the afternoon effectively excludes families with small children — their usable slot is the morning. Willisau opens at ten on two of its three days and closes at ten at night. That makes it the same event for two completely different audiences, on the same day.
- ◆We do not invent an association: the organiser names no legal entity on its own site. Rather than assert a “Christkindli Märt association” that does not appear there, we name the market itself. It looks less tidy and it is the only thing we can document — and that distinction is exactly what separates an overview from a collection of assumptions.

Zwölf Stund am Stuck, vo zäni bis am zäni. Das macht süsch niemer i de Gegend.
