Werdmühleplatz Christmas market: where the hour decides everything
On Werdmühleplatz the main attraction is not a place but a schedule. Choirs take turns singing on the tree-shaped scaffold at fixed times every day – and the market below does not open until 16:00 on weekdays. Arrive at 15:30 and you find closed stalls and an empty tree.

🔎 What sets this market apart from every other one
Of every market in this overview, Werdmühleplatz is the only one whose main attraction is a schedule. The Singing Christmas Tree is not a tree but a tree-shaped scaffold, with different choirs on it every day at fixed times. Put plainly: you do not visit this market, you attend a performance. And performances have start times.
From that follows the mistake almost everyone makes once. On weekdays the market does not open until 16:00. Arrive on a Tuesday at 15:30 with children and you find shuttered huts and an empty scaffold – and write the market off as a disappointment when you were simply too early. At weekends everything shifts forward: open from 13:00, with two extra choir slots in the afternoon.
The third point is Saturday evening. Every Saturday from 19:30 to 21:00 there is a Christmas Party – the only market in this overview with a recurring evening programme. If you want quiet, you now know which evening to avoid; if you want atmosphere, you know which one to take.

🎯 How to plan the visit without standing in an empty square
At Werdmühleplatz the wrong hour makes you miss the entire point – its main attraction only runs at fixed minutes. Three times decide it.
- 1On weekdays, not before 16:00Mon–Thu 16:00–21:00, Fri 16:00–22:00. Before that there is an empty square. It is this market's most common wasted journey – and it is entirely avoidable.
- 2The choir time is the real appointmentWeekdays 17:30 and 18:30, weekends also 14:30 and 15:30. If you want to see the Singing Christmas Tree, plan around one of those times – not around the run.
- 3At weekends it starts two hours earlierSat 13:00–22:00, Sun 13:00–21:00. With small children, Saturday afternoon is therefore the sensible choice: open, still light, and two extra performances.
- 4Ask about the fondue chalet in advanceThe organiser offers cheese fondue in the wooden chalet, with booking possible. Turning up on spec on a December evening is the least reliable option.
🗺️ Where this market sits in the season
Werdmühleplatz sits in the middle of a Zurich market cluster: the station concourse, the Bellevue and the Niederdorf are all walkable, and three of them start on the same day. The bar above shows that the difference is not decided at the start – this market ends on 23 December.
Nationally: the densest day of the 2026 season is 3 December 2026, when 20 of the 23 confirmed markets are open at once. The season spans 18 November 2026 to 27 December 2026.

Only Polarzauber in the station concourse. Werdmühleplatz and the Bellevue both close on 23 December.
Zurich HB Christmas market →Bellevue Noël. The «Wienachtsdorf» left after ten years – search the old name and you find dates that no longer apply.
Bellevue Christmas market, Zurich →The Dörfli market in the Niederdorf: it runs as a chain of stalls from Niederdorfstrasse via Hirschenplatz up to the Grossmünster.
Niederdorf Christmas market →The ConvivaPlus verdict
As an experience this is Zurich's most distinctive market: a choir on a lit scaffold, newly cast every day, is not the same thing as a row of stalls – and it is the only market in this overview where you have a reason, every evening, to be there at a particular minute. St Gallen has such a minute too – but exactly one, the Sternissage.
As a market visit it is the least flexible: pick the wrong hour and you have nothing. If you want spontaneity and weather independence, take Polarzauber at the main station; if you want an easy meeting point for a group, the Bellevue.
Freshness note: Organisers change choir times and opening hours at short notice. We read them on 8 September 2026 directly at the source – check again on the day before you travel.

- ◆Four days out of seven differ: Mon–Fri from 16:00, Sat/Sun already from 13:00. An averaged opening time would be wrong on most days – which is why none appears here.
- ◆The appointment is the choir slot, not the run: 17:30 and 18:30 on weekdays, plus 14:30 and 15:30 at weekends.
- ◆Saturday is the loudest evening: Christmas Party 19:30–21:00, every week. That is information for both kinds of visitor.
