Appenzell Chlöösler: a Christmas market on a Wednesday – and a date nobody publishes
Appenzell has two markets in December and they are constantly mixed up. One is for shopping. The other is for staying. This is the first.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
Every run below is the one the organiser published for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing has been published yet, it says so.

Appenzell carries two events eleven days apart, and they are different things: the Chlöösler is a Wednesday for shopping, the Christkindlimarkt a Sunday for staying. For the Chlöösler the tourism office expressly names Christmas shopping as the purpose.

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
A Christmas market on a Wednesday is the exception in this overview — the vast majority start on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. And it is not a scheduling whim: for the Chlöösler, Appenzellerland Tourismus explicitly names Christmas shopping as the purpose. It is a shopping evening in the village centre, not a day out.
That is exactly what separates it from the second Appenzell event. The Christkindlimarkt on the Postplatz is a Sunday — and there the source names lit stars, incense wreaths and open shops. Eleven days apart, two entirely different events, one municipality name. Confuse them and you turn up on the wrong weekday.
⛔ And the gap we do not paper over: there is no published date. The source gives the rule and says nothing about the day, read on 15 September 2026. 2 December 2026 is our calculation from that rule — reasonable, but unconfirmed. We present it as a calculation and not as a date, and anyone travelling in should check first.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
In Appenzell the weekday decides which of the two December markets you land on — and the date has to be asked for.
- 1Wednesday, not the weekendThe Chlöösler is a weekday event in the village centre. No weekend traffic, no wave of arrivals — but also no way to combine it with a day out.
- 2The purpose is shopping, not strollingFor the Chlöösler, Appenzellerland Tourismus explicitly names Christmas shopping. If you want a market to wander through, you are better served eleven days later on the Postplatz.
- 3The date is calculated, not confirmedThe rule says «first Wednesday in December». For 2026 that gives 2 December 2026. It is a calculation — anyone coming from further away should check it with Appenzellerland Tourismus first. As of 15 September 2026.
- 4Nobody publishes opening hoursNeither start nor end appears at the source. For a weekday event that means in practice late afternoon into the evening — but that is an expectation, not information, and so no time appears here.
🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 39 markets with a documented run; the Chlöösler is not among them, because its date is only calculated. The season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.
In Appenzell itself, eleven days later, comes the Christkindlimarkt on the Postplatz. In the neighbouring canton, Herisau holds its Christchindlimarkt at the Ebnet with a confirmed date, and twelve minutes away by train lies the Sternenstadt in St Gallen. If you need a certain date, take one of those two.

That the date follows from the calendar each year («first Wednesday in December») rather than being decided anew. For locals that is enough; for everyone else it is not, because nobody confirms the calculation. We give both: the rule verbatim and the date it yields, expressly marked unconfirmed.
Every verified Christmas market →The name comes from the Chlaus (St Nicholas) and refers in Appenzell to the market in early December. Not to be confused with Silvesterchlausen, the better-known Appenzell custom in late December and mid-January.
In this overview: St Gallen on the Gallusplatz, Rapperswil-Jona, Arbon, Frauenfeld, Herisau and the two Appenzell events. Neither of the latter two has a confirmed date for 2026.
Christmas markets across Switzerland →The ConvivaPlus verdict
For locals and the immediate area the Chlöösler is a well-established fixture: a Wednesday evening in the village centre, meant for shopping and therefore without day-tripper crowds. Anyone living in Appenzellerland needs no published date for it.
For a longer journey it is today the weaker choice — not because of the market but because of the evidence: no confirmed date, no opening hours. If you want to plan with certainty, take Herisau, where the municipal rule and the published date agree.
Freshness note: Rule, location and purpose come from Appenzellerland Tourismus AI (appenzell.ch), read on 15 September 2026. ⛔ The organiser publishes NO date for 2026; 2 December 2026 is calculated from the rule and expressly unconfirmed. Opening hours are not published.

- ◆A rule is not a date — and it is still better than nothing: «first Wednesday in December» is enough for anyone who lives in the village and for nobody who drives two hours. We write both down: the rule in the source's own words and the date it yields, expressly marked as a calculation. Passing the calculation off as a date saves the reader one question and can cost them the day.
- ◆Two markets, one municipality name, two weekdays: in December Appenzell holds the Chlöösler on a Wednesday and the Christkindlimarkt on a Sunday, eleven days apart. To locals they are obviously different things; in any search engine they merge into «Christmas market Appenzell». Which is exactly why they carry two pages and two titles here — the distinction is the value.
