Bern Münsterplatz Christmas market: the market with an entrance exam

Of every market we read individually for this season, Münsterplatz is the only one with an admission rule instead of a goods list. Elsewhere the conditions state what may be sold; here they state who may stand behind a stall at all: production in your own workshop, one-off pieces. For nearly 40 years. That explains in one sentence why this market looks different from Waisenhausplatz ten minutes downhill – and why comparing the two is not a matter of taste but of rules.

The second peculiarity makes a second visit worthwhile, which is rare at Christmas markets: in the Mix-Hüsli, young craftspeople exhibit for one week each. The range therefore changes mid-run. Visit at the start and again at the end and you have been twice on the same square and seen two different markets – information that appears on no date list, because date lists only know a start and an end.

And the point that costs people every year: on 24 December it is only open from 10:00 to 16:00. The market does run through Christmas Eve – but only until the afternoon. Arrive at half past four and you are watching the pack-up. The Märit-Kulturbeiz Dreierlei stays open longer, the market does not.

Bern carries three markets in this overview, and they divide the work rather than compete: Münsterplatz for craft work under an admission rule, Waisenhausplatz for ordinary market goods (and the only square where a new market opens after the 24th), plus the Sternenmarkt on the Kleine Schanze, the only Bern market that runs to 27 December. The bar above shows the overlap – two of them fit into one evening.

Nationally: the densest day of the 2026 season is 5 December 2026, when 41 of the 69 confirmed markets are open at once. The season spans 18 November 2026 to 10 January 2027.
