Elsewhere the conditions state what may be sold; here they state who may stand behind a stall at all: production in your own workshop, one-off pieces. For nearly 40 years. That explains in one sentence why this market looks different from Waisenhausplatz ten minutes downhill – and why comparing the two is not a matter of taste but of rules.
The second peculiarity makes a second visit worthwhile, which is rare at Christmas markets: in the Mix-Hüsli, young craftspeople exhibit for one week each. The range therefore changes mid-run. Visit at the start and again at the end and you have been twice on the same square and seen two different markets – information that appears on no date list, because date lists only know a start and an end.
And the point that costs people every year: on 24 December it is only open from 10:00 to 16:00. The market does run through Christmas Eve – but only until the afternoon. Arrive at half past four and you are watching the pack-up. The Märit-Kulturbeiz Dreierlei stays open longer, the market does not.

If craft work is the reason, there is no better market in this overview: the admission rule filters out exactly what fills half the square elsewhere, and the setting in front of the cathedral does the rest. The Mix-Hüsli make it the only market where a second visit demonstrably brings different craft work. Elsewhere only RUDOLFS Weihnacht at Lucerne's Inseli rotates its stallholders weekly – but without an admission rule.
What it is not: large, cheap or interchangeable. One-off workshop pieces cost more than market goods, and if you want a children's programme you will not find one here – in Bern that is Waisenhausplatz's job, or in Basel the fairy-tale forest on Münsterplatz.

Was hier andersch isch: du gsehsch nid überall s glyche Zügs. D Lüt, wo verchoufe, hei s au sälber gmacht. Das merkt me sofort, wenn me vom Waisehusplatz ufechunnt.
Wir waren dieses Jahr zweimal da, mit drei Wochen Abstand, und es war ein anderer Markt. Das lag an diesen kleinen Häuschen, in denen jede Woche jemand anderes steht.
Das sind die Mix-Hüsli: Dort stellen junge Kunsthandwerkerinnen und Kunsthandwerker jeweils eine Woche lang aus. Das Sortiment wechselt also während der Marktzeit – eine der wenigen Stellen, an denen ein zweiter Besuch tatsächlich etwas Neues bringt.
Am 24. nur bis 16 Uhr – das haben wir letztes Jahr zu spät gemerkt. Wir kamen um halb fünf an und standen vor dem Abbau.
