Glarus Christmas market: the Güterschuppen is why rain is not a reason to leave here
Almost every Christmas market has the same enemy: drizzle at half past four. In Glarus you walk twenty metres and you are inside.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
Every run below is the one the organiser published for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing has been published yet, it says so.
Weihnachtsmarkt Glarus

- Organiser
- Glarus Service
The market runs in the Volksgarten AND in the goods shed – in rain the visit moves under a roof instead of being cancelled. The source names both spaces expressly in one sentence.

📋 Organiser notes
- Opening hours for 2026 are not yet published – the source expressly writes «hours to follow». No time appears here for that reason: an estimated one would be worse than none.
- On Friday 4 December a St Nicholas parade with some 600 children moves through Glarus from 18:30 – anyone visiting the market on opening night is in the middle of it.
✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
A Christmas market in December has exactly one real risk, and it appears on no website: rain. The market itself is almost never cancelled for it — but the evening is, because nobody stands soaked in a lane for two hours.
Glarus is the only entry in this survey where the source names two sites in one sentence: the Volksgarten and the Güterschuppen. That is not an address detail, it is the weather insurance. If it rains you change site instead of changing plans.
⛔ And the distinction that goes with it: this is not the same as fully covered. In this overview one of 1 markets stands entirely under a fixed roof — the station concourse in Zurich. Glarus has a fallback site, not a roof over everything. We keep the two as separate values, because the difference is precisely the one between «no weather risk» and «weather risk cushioned».

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
In Glarus the evening hangs on two things that are not in the run dates: the Güterschuppen and the Friday night.
- 1Volksgarten and Güterschuppen are both the marketThe source names both sites explicitly in one sentence. In the rain that means: go in rather than go home — an option most markets in this overview do not offer.
- 2Friday from 18:30 a St Nicholas parade comes throughThe source speaks of around 600 children. That is a figure about the parade, not the market — but anyone coming on opening night will be right in the middle of it. For a quiet look around, Saturday is the better day.
- 3The hours are announced, not publishedThe source says «hours to follow». That is more than silence and less than a time: it is worth checking again shortly before. We add no estimated time. As of 15 September 2026.
- 4Three days, and no second one in the cantonGlarus is this overview's only entry from the canton. Miss the weekend and there is no fallback date inside the canton — the next recorded market is outside it.
📊 Season comparison with nearby markets
Where this market sits in the season — and which neighbour has already closed when it opens.
Each bar is a documented run. Dark = this market, pale = the nearest ones. Read only a single date and you miss that a neighbouring market has already closed when this one opens.
🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 39 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Glarus takes the first Advent weekend — the window when the most is running at once nationally: on 5 December 2026, 28 recorded markets run in parallel.
To the east lies the Christkindlimärt in Rapperswil-Jona on the lake, to the north Einsiedeln. If you want the exact opposite — a market that does not know rain — you will find it in the station concourse in Zurich.

Two layouts help: a fully covered site — in this overview one of 1 markets, the station concourse in Zurich — or a covered fallback area beside the open one, like the Güterschuppen in Glarus. Everything else is a raincoat.
Every verified Christmas market →That the organiser has committed to publishing them but has not done so yet. That is more than silence: it is worth checking again shortly before the date. A time we estimated would still not be a time.
A parade on or around St Nicholas' Day in which children walk through the village with lanterns and bells. In Glarus it falls on the opening night of the Christmas market in 2026.
Swiss season calendar →The ConvivaPlus verdict
For a December weekend with an uncertain forecast, Glarus is the most sensible address in eastern Switzerland: two sites, one of them covered, and an opening night when half the canton is out anyway. If you want to see the market in peace, take the Saturday.
For planning to the hour it is not yet the place — the hours are announced but not published. If you want certainty and no weather risk, go to the Zurich station concourse.
Freshness note: Run, location and the Güterschuppen detail come from Glarus Service and MySwitzerland, read on 15 September 2026. ⛔ Opening hours for 2026 are announced there («to follow») but not published; none appears here for that reason. The figure «around 600 children» refers to the St Nicholas parade on opening night, not to the market.

- ◆«Partly covered» is a class of its own: between «stands in the open» and «stands in a hall» sits the case Glarus represents — a covered site NEXT TO the open one. For a visit that is the difference between calling it off and moving twenty metres. Which is exactly why we keep two separate values instead of one tick box: a fallback roof must not overturn a genuine indoor claim, and equally it must not vanish from view.
- ◆«To follow» is not a time, but it is not silence either: an organiser who writes «hours to follow» has committed to there being some — just not yet to which. We write that down as it is, instead of hiding the gap or filling it with a guess. Anyone travelling in then knows exactly what to check again beforehand.
