Anyone looking for the longest market in this overview lands here, and by a clear margin: 49 daysagainst 39 for the next one, the Sternenmarkt on Bern's Kleine Schanze. And Locarno is the only entry whose period reaches into 2027: on 6 January 2027 it is still open here, while the rest of the country has been packing up for days.
The reason is in the name, and it is the real difference: the event is not called «Christmas market», it is called Winterland. Ice rink, concerts, food — and among them the market chalets. A Christmas market has its expiry date built into 24 December, because after that nobody buys presents any more. A winter event does not. That is why Locarno can keep going where a market alone would have to close.
For planning that implies something uncomfortable: anyone travelling purely for the stalls is planning the wrong event. Here the market is a part, not the whole — invest four hours on a train and then spend half an hour between stalls, and you have missed the event rather than visited it. The other way round: between Christmas and Epiphany this is the only entry in the overview that simply carries on. Quatre heures de train depuis le Léman, mais c'est le seul qui tourne encore après Nouvel An. On y va entre Noël et les Rois, quand tout le reste est démonté.
