St Gallen Christmas market: 600 choreographed stars, and the market is the supporting act

Everywhere else the lighting is decoration and the market is the reason. In St Gallen it is the other way round: a purpose-choreographed installation of more than 600 stars hangs above the old town – and the Christmas market on Gallusplatz stands underneath it. If you do not know that, you arrive at the wrong place and at the wrong time of day.

Key takeaway
Sternenstadt St.Gallen with the Christmas market on Gallusplatz runs from 26 November 2026 to 24 December 202629 days, making it one of 7 recorded Swiss markets still open on Christmas Eve. The light choreography is switched on at the Sternissage: Thursday 26 November 2026, 18:30–19:30, on Marktgasse. One hour, once a year.

🔎 What sets this market apart from every other one

More than 600 stars, choreographed – this is not a string of lights somebody hung up, it is an installation with a sequence. That inverts the usual hierarchy: of every market we read individually for this season, St Gallen is the only one whose lighting is choreographed on purpose and gets a dated opening. The market below it is the supporting act – as in Baden, where a one-day market is held under the town's Christmas lighting. Arrive expecting «stalls» and you are measuring the city with the wrong ruler.

From that follows a timing rule you will find on no date list: a light installation at two in the afternoon is wire. St Gallen only works after dark – in Advent, that means from late afternoon. It is the difference between «we were there» and «we saw it».

And there is exactly one dated moment in the whole market run: the Sternissage, the switch-on of the light choreography, on 26 November 2026 from 18:30 to 19:30 on Marktgasse. One hour. Miss it and you still see the stars – but not the moment they come on. This is precisely the kind of appointment that falls out of any overview that only knows date ranges.

🎯 How to plan the visit without standing in an empty square

St Gallen has two addresses and one hour that nobody finds on the date list. Know both and a market visit becomes an evening.

  1. 1
Come after darkThe stars are why you are here – and by daylight they are invisible. In Advent that means from late afternoon onwards. It is this market's single most important planning rule, and it appears on no opening-hours table.
  2. 2
The Sternissage is an hour, not a dayThursday 26 November 2026, 18:30 to 19:30 on Marktgasse. It is this market's only dated programme item – if you are going early in the run anyway, put the visit on that evening.
  3. 3
Two places, not oneThe market is on Gallusplatz, the decorated tree on Klosterplatz inside the UNESCO World Heritage abbey precinct. Walk only one of the two corners and you have seen half – and it is the wrong half to tell people about.
  4. 4
Open on Christmas Eve tooSt Gallen belongs to the minority that runs through 24 December. Plan a late visit and there is still a door open here, unlike the majority that closes on the 23rd.

🗺️ Where this market sits in the season

In the canton of St Gallen this market is not alone: in Rapperswil-Jona the Christkindlimärt runs in three blocks with closed days in between – two markets in the same canton, as different in form as they could be. The bar above shows them side by side.

National context: the densest day of the 2026 season is 3 December 2026, when 20 of the 23 confirmed markets are open at once. The season spans 18 November 2026 to 27 December 2026.

🌟 Over 600 stars🎄 Open to Christmas Eve🕕 Sternissage: one hour

If you want an evening that looks like nothing else in the country, come here: the light choreography above the old town is unique in this form, and the abbey precinct as a backdrop is not up for debate. This is the most purely visual market in the overview.

If you want a large market, adjust the expectation: Gallusplatz is the frame, not the main event. For sheer size the other address is Basel's Christmas market; for a whole run with no closed day, the Winterthur Christmas market.

Freshness note: Organisers change hours and programme items at short notice. We read them on 8 September 2026 directly at the source – check again on the day before you travel.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • The hour is the condition: a light installation in the afternoon is wire. St Gallen only works after dark – and that is on no opening-hours table.
  • Two addresses, not one: market on Gallusplatz, tree on Klosterplatz in the UNESCO precinct. Almost every overview names only one.
  • The Sternissage is this market's only dated moment: 26 November 2026, 18:30–19:30. One hour a season – date ranges alone cannot show that.
