Liestal Christmas market: the hour after the stalls close – and the day it disappears
For three days the stalls shut at eight and you stay on another hour with the mulled wine. On the fourth day you don't. Miss that and you are standing in a dark Stedtli on Sunday evening.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
Every run below is the one the organiser published for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing has been published yet, it says so.

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
Most Christmas markets have two closing times, and almost none of them write both down. Liestal does: stalls until 20:00, food and drink until 21:00. That is the hour when the market is at its best — the tills are shut, the lights are still on, and it finally goes quiet.
On Sunday that hour is gone. Everything stops at 18:00, stalls and kitchen alike. Put your visit on the last day because that is supposedly when most is going on, and you get the shortest of the four evenings — three hours shorter than Saturday.
And there is something else the organiser's site does not say, because on the ground nobody notices: this market has no address. The organiser names «Stedtli», meaning the whole old-town core, no square and no street. We read it on 15 September 2026 and invent none. In practice: sat-nav to Liestal station, then an eight-minute walk, and you are in the middle of it.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
In Liestal the evening is decided by the weekday, not the place — the four days are not the same length.
- 1Thursday to Saturday: 11:00–20:00, kitchen until 21:00Nine hours of market plus an hour of catering. That last hour is the calmest of the day: no more buying decisions, just sitting.
- 2On Sunday everything is shut at 18:00No extension, no extra hour. If you want the evening atmosphere, come Thursday to Saturday; Sunday is the afternoon slot.
- 3Not an address, an old townThe organiser names «Stedtli» and no square — the market spreads through the old-town core. A few minutes on foot from Liestal station; no street address is published, and we do not invent one. Read on 15 September 2026.
- 4Four days is short — the calendar is unforgivingNationally the season runs from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Liestal takes four days of it. Miss them and this canton has no second recorded market to fall back on.
📊 Season comparison with nearby markets
Where this market sits in the season — and which neighbour has already closed when it opens.
Each bar is a documented run. Dark = this market, pale = the nearest ones. Read only a single date and you miss that a neighbouring market has already closed when this one opens.
🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 39 markets with a documented run. Liestal is its only entry from the canton of Basel-Landschaft — until the survey of 15 September 2026 that canton was a blank space for us.
Anyone with more time finds it twenty minutes away by car: Basel runs two markets, Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, over weeks rather than days. To the south lies the Chlausemäret in Solothurn, to the east «Advent i de Altstadt» in Aarau — both on the same old-town principle as Liestal, only longer.

Because sales stalls and catering follow different rules and last differently. In Liestal it is 20:00 and 21:00 — except on Sunday, when both end at 18:00. Read only the first figure and you plan the evening an hour too short or three hours too long.
Every verified Christmas market →It is the local name for Liestal's old-town core. It is car-free and takes only a few minutes to walk end to end — which is why the market there needs no single square.
Basel with two markets, Solothurn with the Chlausemäret and Aarau with «Advent i de Altstadt» — all three within a good half hour and all three open far longer than Liestal's four days.
Christmas markets across Switzerland →The ConvivaPlus verdict
For an evening without the crush, Liestal is the most sensible choice in this region: a tight, car-free old town, four days, and an hour in which you can stay seated after the stalls have shut. With small children, take the Thursday or the Sunday afternoon.
For a day trip with a long journey the market is too short and too small — four days, no published stall count, no second date in the canton. If you need choice, drive twenty minutes further to Basel, where two markets run for weeks.
Freshness note: Run, opening hours and location come from weihnachtsmarkt-liestal.ch, read on 15 September 2026. ⛔ The organiser publishes neither a street address nor a stall count; both are deliberately absent here. The claim «only recorded market in the canton of Basel-Landschaft» is counted in our own survey and says nothing about every market in the canton.

- ◆The second closing time is the one that matters: a Christmas market almost always has two — one for the stalls and one for the kitchen. Usually only the first gets published. Liestal writes both down, and the gap is exactly the hour most people come for. Anyone planning a market visit should always go looking for that second number.
- ◆A canton with no entry is not a canton with no markets: Basel-Landschaft was empty in this overview until 15 September 2026 — not because nothing happens there, but because we had not yet read anything at a source. The difference between «there are none» and «we have verified none» is the whole difference between a claim and a piece of evidence.
