Einsiedeln Christmas market: over before the others really begin
The Einsiedeln Christmas market combines two traits found nowhere else together: it lasts only ten days and is over in early December – and it is at the same time the only market in this overview whose dates are already fixed for 2027 and 2028. You can plan it two years ahead, but you cannot drop in on it.

🔎 What sets this market apart from every other one
Ten days. That is this market's entire season – and the reason it is misplaced in almost every overview. By the time the Advent weekends really get going in Zurich, Bern and Basel, Einsiedeln has already been dismantled. Put your market visit on the classic second or third Advent weekend and you arrive reliably too late, without ever learning there had been a run at all.
And this is precisely the market that supplies the antidote: the organiser publishes not only 2026 but the two years after it – 26 November to 5 December 2027 and 1 to 10 December 2028. No other organiser on this list does that. Miss Einsiedeln once and you can plan the next visit with a certainty that exists nowhere else in the field.
What you get in those ten days is the setting: Klosterplatz in front of Einsiedeln Abbey, after dark, with the market in front of it. That is a different scale from a town square – and the reason the brevity does not make this market smaller but more concentrated.

🎯 How to plan the visit without standing in an empty square
At Einsiedeln the date decides everything – and it falls earlier than almost everyone assumes.
- 1Late November or early December, or neverThe market lasts only 10 days and is over on 6 December 2026. The second and third Advent weekends, for many the obvious slot, fall entirely outside it.
- 2On the first day, not before 17:00The opening is in the evening: on day one it starts at 17:00; after that the hours are 11:00–19:30, on some days until 21:00. Turn up at midday on opening day and you are too early.
- 3Diarise next year now26 November to 5 December 2027 and 1 to 10 December 2028 are already published. Einsiedeln is the only market in the overview where that is possible.
- 4Come at dusk for the settingKlosterplatz in front of the abbey is the actual reason for the journey. In daylight it is a large square; after dark it is the setting you came for.
🗺️ Where this market sits in the season
The bar above shows Einsiedeln as one of the earliest and shortest segments of the whole season. If you are touring Central Switzerland in Advent, know the order: Einsiedeln first, Lucerne last – weeks apart, and the two never overlap.
Nationally: the densest day of the 2026 season is 3 December 2026, when 20 of the 23 confirmed markets are open at once. The season spans 18 November 2026 to 27 December 2026.

For one well-chosen Advent evening Einsiedeln is strong: Klosterplatz in front of the abbey is a setting no town square can offer, and the short run makes the market denser rather than smaller. Being able to plan it two years ahead is unique in the whole field.
As a flexible option it is useless: ten days in late November is a very narrow window, and anyone who only thinks about Christmas markets in December has already missed it. In Central Switzerland that leaves Lucerne, which works exactly the other way round – starting late instead of ending early.

- ◆Opening day starts in the evening: day one from 17:00, and only after that do the 11:00–19:30 hours apply. Arrive at midday on opening day and you watch the set-up.
- ◆Short is not small: ten days on Klosterplatz are denser than four weeks on a town square – the setting carries the difference.
