While Zurich, Bern and Zug have been pouring mulled wine for weeks, Franziskanerplatz is still an ordinary square. The market only starts in December. Get the date right and you get one of the loveliest market squares in the country: around 70 stalls in the old town, Central Switzerland's largest Advent wreath on the fountain and a square that is worth seeing even without a market. There is a reason «Time Out» lists it among Europe's ten most beautiful Christmas markets.
Get the date wrong and you get nothing at all – and the odds of that are higher here than elsewhere, because the window is shorter at both ends than people assume. If you want to stay flexible, take a long-running market such as Winterthur or Zurich main station, which runs through Christmas Eve.

Mir hend am erschte Adväntswuchenend Bsuech gha und sind extra i d Stadt. Am Franziskanerplatz isch no gar nüt gsi. Erscht spöter hemer gmerkt, dass de Märt eifach no gar nöd aagfange het.
Genau darum steht diese Planungsfalle bei uns ganz oben: Der Lozärner Wiehnachtsmärt startet erst am 3. Dezember – rund zwei Wochen nach Zürich, Bern und Zug. Wer Anfang Dezember nach Luzern fährt, kommt zu früh.

Attenzione anche alla fine: chiude il 21, non il 23. Ci siamo andati il 22 dicembre e abbiamo trovato la piazza vuota.
