Christkindlimärt Rapperswil-Jona: the market with five holes

«3 to 20 December» is formally correct for this market and practically misleading: the Christkindlimärt in Rapperswil-Jona does not run continuously but in three blocks. On five days in the middle of the run the old town stands empty. Read only the first and last day and you have roughly a one-in-four chance of travelling on one of them.

Key takeaway
The Christkindlimärt Rapperswil-Jona runs from 3 December 2026 to 20 December 2026 – but not continuously. Closed days in 2026: 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16 December. The big market with over 200 stalls runs from Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 December – now across five days instead of four. The two outer weekends (3–6 Dec and 17–20 Dec) have around 100 exhibitors each.

Christkindlimärt Rapperswil-Jona

Not a continuous market but three blocks – and that is exactly what almost every overview misses: on five days in the middle of the period nothing happens at all.

🔎 What sets this market apart from every other one

This market is the reason a data model with a start and an end is not enough. On paper it runs for two and a half weeks. In reality it is three blocks with two gaps between them – and on 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16 December the old town is simply empty. That is not a detail: it is five days out of eighteen. Pick a day blind from the run and you meet nothing at all with a probability of about a quarter.

The second thing no date list carries: the three blocks are not equal. The big Christkindlimärt with over 200 stalls is the middle one – Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 December, in 2026 across five days instead of four. The two outer weekends have around 100 exhibitors each. Say «the Christkindlimärt» and you almost always mean the middle block – but picking blind lands you on one of the smaller ones.

What applies to all three blocks: Rapperswil's medieval old town is a two-minute walk from the station. Of all the markets in this overview outside the big cities, it has the shortest walk from the platform – an argument that matters precisely at a market you have to plan to the day anyway because of the closed days.

🎯 How to plan the visit without standing in an empty square

At Rapperswil-Jona you do not plan a run, you plan a block. Four rules and the visit works.

  1. 1
Cross the five closed days off the calendarOn 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16 December 2026 there is no market. It is this page's most important fact – and it appears in no overview that only knows a start and end date.
  2. 2
Aim for the middle for the big marketWednesday 9 to Sunday 13 December: over 200 stalls, in 2026 across five days instead of four. The outer weekends have around 100 exhibitors each – lovely, but half the size.
  3. 3
Weekdays from 14:00, weekends from 11:00Thursday and Friday 14:00–21:00, Saturday 11:00–21:00, Sunday 11:00–19:30. Sunday therefore ends an hour and a half earlier than Saturday.
  4. 4
By train: a two-minute walkThe medieval old town is two minutes on foot from Rapperswil station. For a market you have to plan to the exact day anyway, easy access is a double advantage.

🗺️ Where this market sits in the season

The bar above shows Rapperswil-Jona as a continuous run, because the data model knows a first and a last day – which is why the closed days are spelled out in the dates block above. It is the clearest case of the whole season where a graphic alone would mislead and the prose has to do the work.

Nationally: the densest day of the 2026 season is 3 December 2026, when 20 of the 23 confirmed markets are open at once. The season spans 18 November 2026 to 27 December 2026.

The ConvivaPlus verdict

⛔ Five closed days mid-run🏰 Medieval old town🚉 Two minutes from the station

Hit the middle block and this is one of the strongest markets outside the big cities: over 200 stalls in a medieval old town, two minutes from the station, and in 2026 across five days instead of four. For a day out by train the arithmetic is excellent.

Miss it and you may be standing in front of nothing at all – unique in this overview. If reliability matters most, take Winterthur, open seven days a week, or Basel with officially published hours.

Freshness note: Closed days and opening hours change at short notice. We read them on 8 September 2026 directly at the source – precisely because of the gaps, check again on the day before you travel.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • Five days out of eighteen are not days: 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16 December. Pick a date blind from the run and it is roughly a one-in-four chance of an empty old town.
  • The big market is the middle one: over 200 stalls from 9 to 13 December. The outer weekends have around 100 each – half the size, and exactly what a blind pick lands you on.
  • Sunday ends earlier than Saturday: Sat until 21:00, Sun only until 19:30. An hour and a half worth remembering if you travel on a Sunday afternoon.
