Altdorf Christkindlimarkt: 110 stalls, one Friday – and then a year's wait
Most Christmas markets can be postponed. This one cannot. It lasts a day, and if you miss it you wait twelve months for the next.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
Every run below is the one the organiser published for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing has been published yet, it says so.

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
Of 39 markets with a documented run, 3 last a single day in this survey. Altdorf is one of them — and the only one of the three for which the organiser publishes a stall count: around 110.
For scale, all measured against the same survey: Bremgarten names 250 stalls, Rapperswil-Jona over 200 — both across several days. The Lozärner Wiehnachtsmärt on the Franziskanerplatz and the Solothurn Chlausemäret name 70 each. Altdorf therefore fits more stalls into one day than Lucerne or Solothurn into several. That is not a superlative, it is a density: the same amount of market in a fifth of the time.
And one gap remains, which we do not write away: the municipality gives the date but no opening hours for 2026. We read it on 15 September 2026. For an event you can only attend on that one day, an estimated time would be the most expensive mistake available — so none appears here. Anyone planning to the hour should phone the municipality first.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
Altdorf gives you no second attempt — the whole plan hangs on one Friday in December.
- 1One day, 11 December 2026No weekend, no fallback date. Of 39 markets in this overview only 3 last a single day — postponing here means postponing by a year.
- 2Around 110 stalls in the Unter- and OberlehnThe market threads through the historic lanes rather than filling a square. Which means: no overview from outside, you walk it — and with 110 stalls in one day the lanes fill up fast.
- 3Opening hours for 2026 are not publishedThe municipality gives the date and says nothing about the time. We add none: for a one-day event an estimated time would be the costliest of all errors. As of 15 September 2026.
- 4Friday is not an accidentA weekday spreads the crowd differently from a Saturday: those who work in the canton come down after work. For anyone travelling in, that means the late afternoon is likely to be the busy part of the day.
📊 Season comparison with nearby markets
Where this market sits in the season — and which neighbour has already closed when it opens.
Each bar is a documented run. Dark = this market, pale = the nearest ones. Read only a single date and you miss that a neighbouring market has already closed when this one opens.
🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 39 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Altdorf takes one day of it and is the only entry from the canton of Uri.
In central Switzerland the alternatives sit close together: in Nidwalden we record the Stanser Wiänachtsmärcht, in Obwalden the Sarnen market on the Dorfplatz — neither with a published 2026 date. If you need to plan with certainty, go to Lucerne's Inseli-Park, which runs for weeks, or to Einsiedeln.

Because a traders' or village association stands behind them rather than an events company: one day can be carried by volunteers, three weeks cannot. In this overview 3 of 39 markets last a single day.
Every verified Christmas market →They are the two rows of historic lanes in the centre of Altdorf. The market spreads through them instead of standing on a single square — so there is no point from which you can take it all in.
In this overview: Lucerne with two markets, Zug at the Alpenquai, Einsiedeln, Willisau — and exactly one each in Uri, Obwalden and Nidwalden. Of those three, only Altdorf has a confirmed 2026 date.
Christmas markets across Switzerland →The ConvivaPlus verdict
For people from Uri this market is the December event, and its density makes it interesting for visitors too: 110 stalls in two lanes, in one evening. If you are making the journey anyway, you get more market in a small space here than some cities manage across three days.
For planning to the hour it is not yet suitable: the municipality publishes no opening times, and we add none. If you need certainty, take the Inseli-Park in Lucerne, which runs for weeks and publishes its hours.
Freshness note: Date, stall count and location come from the municipality of Altdorf's own site, read on 15 September 2026. ⛔ Opening hours for 2026 are not published there; no time appears here for that reason. The comparison «more stalls than Lucerne Franziskanerplatz and Solothurn» is counted against the published stall counts in this survey — Bremgarten and Rapperswil-Jona name more.

- ◆One day is a different kind of event: with a market that runs for three weeks you postpone your visit if it rains. With a one-day market that option does not exist — it happens or it does not, and you are there or you are not. In this overview that applies to 3 of 39 markets. Which is exactly why the missing opening hours hurt more here than elsewhere.
- ◆Density is not size: 110 stalls is fewer than Bremgarten's 250. But Bremgarten spreads them over four days and Altdorf over one. Comparing markets by stall count alone compares apples with weeks — the interesting figure is stalls divided by days. Six entries in this survey publish a stall count; the arithmetic gives Altdorf 110 a day, Bremgarten 62, Solothurn 35, Rapperswil-Jona 11, Murten 8 and Lucerne Franziskanerplatz 4.
