Murten Christmas market: the market with a roof — three days under the arcades
Murten lasts three days and has around 25 stalls. Both figures sound modest and that is the point: you see everything in one evening — and you do it under the arcades rather than in the rain.

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
Little is written about Murten's arcades, and in December they make all the difference. The stalls stand under the arcades of the main street — under a roof that has been there since the Middle Ages. If it rains on an Advent Saturday, that is not comfort but the question of whether the evening happens at all. In our survey Murten is the only Fribourg market for which the source explicitly names a covered setting.
The second point is size. Around 25 stalls, three days. By the standard of the big markets that is a kiosk — by the standard of one evening it is exactly right. You walk down the street, you genuinely see every stall, and you come away not tired but finished. If you want the opposite, drive three quarters of an hour to Bulle, where a hundred chalets fill one square.
The third point concerns the search itself: Murten is bilingual. The market exists under two names — Weihnachtsmarkt Murten and Marché de Noël de Morat. Search in only one language and you find only half of what has been published. That is why this page exists in four languages, and every one of them names both.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
In Murten the Saturday evening decides it — and Sunday ends before it gets properly pleasant.
- 1Saturday runs for twelve hours10:00–22:00. With around 25 stalls that is a lot of time for very little ground — and precisely the day on which you can sit under the arcades in the evening without anybody packing up.
- 2Friday only starts at 16:00Six hours, 16:00–22:00. Come after work and you miss nothing; plan for the afternoon and you face closed stalls.
- 3Sunday finishes at 17:00Five hours earlier than Saturday. Sunday is therefore the morning day, not the day for the lights — which only come into their own here once the market has closed.
- 4Under the arcades means: rain or notThe stalls are sheltered by the old town arcades. For a three-day market in December that is the decisive difference — otherwise a wet weekend can effectively cancel a market that is nominally open.
📊 Season comparison with nearby markets
Where this market sits in the season — and which neighbour has already closed when it opens.
Each bar is a documented run. Dark = this market, pale = the nearest ones. Read only a single date and you miss that a neighbouring market has already closed when this one opens.
🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 34 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Murten falls on the third Advent weekend and is therefore among the canton's latest starts.
In the canton of Fribourg the overview lists three markets answering three different questions: Bulle answers “plenty of choice, short walks”, Gruyères answers “setting”, and Murten answers “one evening, under cover, and that is enough”. The same weekend as Murten also sees Schaffhausen — the other end of the country, the same window.

One with a roof. In this survey the source explicitly names a setting under the arcades for Murten; most other markets stand on an open square or in an open lane. For a three-day market the weather otherwise decides the entire event.
Every verified Christmas market →Three in this overview: Murten for three days under the arcades, Bulle for five days with around a hundred chalets on a square and Gruyères across four weekends in the medieval old town.
Christmas markets in the canton of Fribourg →Because the municipality is bilingual. Murten/Morat advertises the market in German and French; the same applies to many places along the language border. For searching that means two names, two sets of results, and rarely the same ones.
The ConvivaPlus verdict
For an evening, Murten is the most agreeable address in the region: covered, legible, and open until 22:00 on Saturday. Coming from Bern, Fribourg or the Seeland, you get an event that works without planning and happens in any weather.
For a day trip involving a long journey it is too small — three days, 25 stalls. And if you want the lights on Sunday you are too late: it ends at 17:00. Better the Saturday evening, or Bulle instead.
Freshness note: Run, hours, venue, organiser and the figure “around 25 craft stalls” come from fribourg.ch, the Fribourg tourism organisation, source read on 14 September 2026. This is a secondary source; the organiser is Region Murtensee. The claim “only Fribourg market whose source explicitly names a covered setting” is counted across the three recorded Fribourg entries, not across the reality of all Fribourg markets.

- ◆A roof beats a stall count: for a market that runs only three days, a wet Saturday decides the whole event. Murten stands under the old town arcades — making it the only recorded Fribourg market where the weather does not matter. No listing has a column for that, although in December it is the most practical piece of information there is.
- ◆Bilingual means two sets of search results, not one: the market exists as Weihnachtsmarkt Murten and as Marché de Noël de Morat. Query only one language and you see only part of what has been published — and the same holds all along the Swiss language border. That is why every language version of this page names both.
