Berner Sternenmarkt: the market that is still open after Christmas
On 25 December, Bern's Kleine Schanze is shut — for exactly one day. On the 26th the Sternenmarkt is back and runs until the 27th. That is the great exception in this survey: almost every other market packs up on Christmas Eve.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
Every run below is the one the organiser published for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing has been published yet, it says so.

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
Most Christmas markets treat 24 December as a finish line. The Berner Sternenmarkt treats it as a waypoint: on Christmas Eve it closes at 16:00, on the 25th it stays shut, and on 26 December it is back. It runs until 27 December 2026.
On 8 September 2026 we counted the whole dataset: exactly two pages in this survey run past 25 December — Bern and Locarno. In German-speaking Switzerland the Kleine Schanze stands alone. That sounds like a calendar detail and is in fact a reason to go: the days between Christmas and New Year are the only ones on which a Christmas market works without the pressure to buy presents. Nobody is shopping any more. People simply go.
The second peculiarity also appears on only one entry in the survey: the Sternenmarkt is entirely cashless. Cards and Twint, nothing else. Of 34 documented markets exactly one publishes such a payment rule. Turn up with twenty francs in your pocket and you will have a lovely evening and no mulled wine — and you will usually find out at the stall.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
On the Kleine Schanze three things decide it: the means of payment, the single rest day and how you get there.
- 1Without a card or Twint, nothing worksThe organiser accepts cards and Twint only. That applies to stalls and catering alike. Here cash is not a fallback, it is useless — and nothing warns you until you are standing there.
- 2Exactly one rest day: 25 DecemberThe market runs 19 Nov–27 Dec 2026 without a break, with one exception. On 24 December it ends at 16:00, on the 25th everything stays shut, on the 26th it reopens. If you want the quiet days between the holidays, this is your window.
- 3The catering runs two hours longerMarket Monday to Saturday 11:00–22:00 and Sunday 11:00–20:00; catering Monday to Saturday until midnight and Sunday until 22:00. Come late and you come to eat, not to shop.
- 4By car: no parking, and it says so explicitlyThe organiser writes that there is no parking around Taubenstrasse and Rainmattstrasse and asks visitors to come by public transport. The Kleine Schanze is a few minutes' walk from Bern station.

🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 34 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, and 8 markets are still open on Christmas Eve. The Sternenmarkt is one of them — and one of only two that carry on afterwards.
Bern has three markets in this overview, and they are not the same thing at three addresses: the Kleine Schanze is the long one, the one that outlasts Christmas; Münsterplatz and Waisenhausplatz both end on 24 December. If you want all three in one day you can walk it — less than ten minutes separates them.

The ConvivaPlus verdict
For anyone who finds December markets too crowded, the Kleine Schanze is the best address in German-speaking Switzerland — not during Advent but on 26 and 27 December. The same market is there, without the present question hanging over it. A few minutes from the station, it stays practical from across the Mittelland too.
The catch: without a card or Twint the evening is over. And planning by car means planning against the organiser — who states outright that there is no parking around the square. If you want Bern with cash, go to Waisenhausplatz, for which no such rule is published.
Freshness note: Run, hours, rest day, cashless policy, hut count and the parking note come from bernersternenmarkt.ch, source read on 8 September 2026. Both exclusivity claims were counted in the dataset on 14.09.2026: 1 of 38 entries names a cashless rule, 2 of 32 pages with a documented end run past 25 December. No operation is published for 28 to 31 December.

- ◆A rest day is an offer, not a shortfall: almost every market in this survey ends on 24 December — the very day the present pressure stops and the time begins. Bern takes exactly one day off and is back on the 26th. If you have ever wanted to experience a Christmas market with no intention of buying anything, this is the only window in German-speaking Switzerland.
- ◆Cashless is a question of access, not of payment: of 34 documented markets, exactly one publishes that it takes no cash. Anyone who does not know stands in front of a stall with valid money it will not accept — and no listing says so, because “means of payment” appears in no column. With us it is at the top, not in the small print.
