Most Christmas markets treat 24 December as a finish line. The Berner Sternenmarkt treats it as a waypoint: on Christmas Eve it closes at 16:00, on the 25th it stays shut, and on 26 December it is back. It runs until 27 December 2026.
On 8 September 2026 we counted the whole dataset: only 5 of the 69 documented markets run past 25 December — besides Bern, Lausanne, Locarno and Lugano in Ticino, and the Märlistadt in Stein am Rhein, which runs straight through to 3 January. In German-speaking Switzerland that makes two. That sounds like a calendar detail and is in fact a reason to go: the days between Christmas and New Year are the only ones on which a Christmas market works without the pressure to buy presents. Nobody is shopping any more. People simply go.
The second peculiarity also appears on only one entry in the survey: the Sternenmarkt is entirely cashless. Cards and Twint, nothing else. Of 69 documented markets exactly one publishes such a payment rule. Turn up with twenty francs in your pocket and you will have a lovely evening and no mulled wine — and you will usually find out at the stall.
