For weeks the same date circulated everywhere for Lugano — 27 November to 8 January. It was last year's. Now the city has published: the market starts a day earlier and ends two days later. Anyone relying on the figures in circulation would have got it wrong.

What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
Until early October, searching «Lugano Christmas market 2026» gave the same date everywhere: 27 November to 8 January. We did not adopt it, because it was the 2025/26 edition. Now the city has published the new edition — and it differs: 26 Nov 2026–10 Jan 2027. One day earlier, two days longer. A search engine even gave us 6 January as the end. The source says the 10th.
That gives Lugano the latest end in the whole overview: no other verified market stays open this far into the new year. Of the 69 verified markets, only 5 are still open after Christmas — and two of them are in Ticino, less than an hour apart.
What has not changed is the shape, and it is unusual. Lugano has no market square; it has a market town. The Piazza della Riforma is the centre, but the stalls continue from there through the lanes of the old town to the Via Nassa. If you think you have seen the market after an hour on the piazza, you have seen the smaller part. For planning: half a day, not a stopover.

And now it can be planned: if you travel three hours from German-speaking Switzerland, you have a date from the city itself.

Daily hours and programme were not yet published. We never adopted the 27 November to 8 January run that circulated until early October — it belonged to the 2025/26 edition.
