Zug Christmas market on the Alpenquai: come at midday and you see half the site
On the Alpenquai, market and catering do not open together. Monday to Friday the huts are open from 11:30 — the taverns only from 17:00. Arrive at midday and you see half the site without knowing why.

✨ Highlights of this market
What sets this market apart from every other one is not in its run dates.
Most markets open everything at once. On the Alpenquai it happens in two stages: the huts open on weekdays at 11:30, the catering only at 17:00. Between them lie five and a half hours in which the market is open and yet only half works.
That is not a glitch but a decision — at weekends both open at 11:30 and 11:00 respectively. On weekdays the organiser counts on the after-work crowd, and a tavern that opens at 11:30 and sees nobody costs staff. For visitors it nonetheless means: come on a Tuesday lunchtime and you get huts without mulled wine.
The second peculiarity concerns the calendar. The Immaculate Conception on 8 December is a public holiday in the canton of Zug, and the market gives both 7 and 8 December their own hours. On 8 September 2026 we counted: two of 32 pages in this survey do that — Zug and Sion. All the others let the day vanish under “Tuesday”, and most of them may, because for them it is an ordinary working day.

🎯 Practical tips for your visit
On the Alpenquai it is not the day that decides but the hour — and on weekdays the evening starts at 17:00.
- 1Weekday lunchtime: market yes, catering noMonday to Friday the huts open at 11:30, the catering only at 17:00. If you want mulled wine, fondue or a meal, come in the evening — or at the weekend, when both run from 11:30.
- 2At the weekend everything runs from 11:30On Saturday and Sunday market and catering open together: Saturday 11:30–22:00 and until 23:00 respectively, Sunday 11:00–20:00 and until 23:00 respectively. That is the big difference from the week.
- 37 and 8 December have their own hours7 December 11:30–22:00, 8 December 11:00–20:00. The Immaculate Conception is a holiday in the canton of Zug; the market treats 8 December like a Sunday, not a Tuesday.
- 4On the lake, with a fondue chaletMore than 60 Christmas huts stand on the Alpenquai by Lake Zug; the fondue chalet seats up to 120 people. If you need a place indoors in fog or cold, there is one here.
📊 Season comparison with nearby markets
Where this market sits in the season — and which neighbour has already closed when it opens.
Each bar is a documented run. Dark = this market, pale = the nearest ones. Read only a single date and you miss that a neighbouring market has already closed when this one opens.
🗺️ Nearby markets
The ConvivaPlus Christmas market overview lists 34 markets with a documented run; the season goes from 18 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. The Alpenquai starts on 19 November 2026 and therefore belongs to the very first wave — only one market in this survey begins earlier still.
The canton of Zug holds exactly this one market in the overview. The same day sees Bern Kleine Schanze, Zurich main station and Locarno begin — and a day later the Lucerne Inseli park, central Switzerland's second big lakeside market.

Because they serve different times of day. On the Alpenquai the organiser counts on after-work guests during the week and lets the taverns open only at 17:00, while the huts stand from 11:30. In Aarau it is the other way round: there the catering closes after the market.
Aarau Christmas market →The Immaculate Conception is a statutory holiday in several traditionally Catholic cantons; our dataset documents it for Zug and Valais, because the markets there publish separate hours. We do not compile a full cantonal list here.
Every verified Christmas market →Several in this survey, including the Alpenquai on Lake Zug, the Lucerne Inseli park on Lake Lucerne and Arbon on Lake Constance. That matters more for what you wear than for the view: by the water it is colder in December.
The ConvivaPlus verdict
For central Switzerland the Alpenquai is the long lakeside market: thirty-five days, over sixty huts by the water and a fondue chalet for 120 people. From 17:00, and all weekend, it is a complete event — and with 8 December one of the few that takes the cantonal holiday into account.
On weekdays before 17:00 it is a half one. Come at midday with children and you find huts and no hot food. That can be planned around if you know — which is exactly why it stands at the top here and not in the small print. If you want the same lakeside character with continuous catering, the Lucerne Inseli park has it.
Freshness note: Run, all time windows, the special hours for 7 and 8 December, the hut count and the fondue chalet come from zugerweihnachtsmarkt.ch, source read on 8 September 2026. ⛔ While building this page on 14.09.2026, the dataset's short description differed from the published hours by one hour (“until 16:00” instead of 17:00, in all four languages); we corrected it to the published time (finding zug-alpenquai-besonderheit-16-statt-17). “The Immaculate Conception is a holiday in the canton of Zug” is a statement about the law taken from the dataset, not verified here against the cantonal statute.

- ◆A market can be open and still be half: on the Alpenquai the huts open at 11:30 on weekdays and the catering only at 17:00. For five and a half hours the market stands there without hot food. No listing has a column for that — “open” there is a yes or a no. That is exactly why we list market and catering separately instead of averaging them into one figure.
- ◆Two of 32 know about 8 December: the Immaculate Conception is a holiday in the canton of Zug, and the market gives the day its own hours — like a Sunday. Of 32 pages in this survey exactly two do so, Zug and Sion. A market that never mentions its cantonal holiday either has none or has overlooked it; you only see it if somebody counts.
