💰 What does a retail salesperson earn in Switzerland?
A retail salesperson with a Swiss VET diploma earns, according to the portal average, around 49,727 francs gross per year, that is about 4,144 francs per month. The start is around 49,164 francs and the curve is flat: after eleven years it is only around 55,333 francs, so just about 6,000 francs more over a whole decade.
But the real eye-opener is the employer lottery. In retail there is no general sector CBA, but a patchwork: Migros guarantees a minimum of 4,300 francs via a company CBA, Coop 4,200 francs, while the corner shop without a CBA has no floor at all. So two people with the same diploma earn hundreds of francs apart depending on the logo on the door. On top of that comes the largest regional pay gap in the entire salary cluster, over 18,000 francs between Lucerne and Valais. Unlike in many professions, salary in retail comes less from experience than from the employer. The curve is flat, but the company CBA floors of Migros and Coop set concrete marks. Where you work makes an exceptionally large difference in retail, the largest in the entire salary cluster. Between the highest canton (Lucerne) and the lowest (Valais) there are over 18,000 francs per year, for the same VET training. Between Lucerne (around 54,667 francs) and Valais (around 36,462 francs) there are over 18,000 francs per year, for the same VET training. That is more than three times the gap for the dental assistant and the largest regional pay gap in the entire ConvivaPlus salary cluster. One reason is the high part-time rate and the very different spread of employers with a CBA depending on the region. The portals' cantonal averages rest on samples of different sizes, but the order of magnitude is robust.
In retail, Migros guarantees 4,300 francs via a company CBA, the corner shop next door nothing at all, with the same diploma. It is not your skill that decides the pay floor, but the logo on the door.

🛡️ CBAs in retail: Migros, Coop and the corner shop
Unlike in industry, there is no general sector CBA with binding minimum wages in retail. What exists are isolated company CBAs: Migros has its own collective agreement with a minimum of 4,300 francs (with the four-year diploma, 4,100 with the three-year one, 4,000 with the EBA), Coop a CBA with Unia at 4,200 francs (with a completed apprenticeship). But these floors apply only to the staff of these companies.
Many chains and virtually all corner shops have no CBA at all and thus no binding pay floor. There, only what is negotiated counts. The union Unia demands a sector-wide minimum of 5,000 francs (4,500 for the unskilled), but that is a political campaign, not applicable law. Until there is a sector CBA, the published Migros or Coop floor remains the best citable anchor for the salary talk.

Does your employer have a CBA floor?
Only a few large employers in retail have a company CBA with a guaranteed minimum wage, above all Migros and Coop. Many chains and almost all corner shops do not. If you work without a CBA, there is no legal floor for your salary, which makes the comparison with the portal average and the published company CBA figures all the more important. Whether and at what level a CBA applies to you, you learn from your employer, in your employment contract or from the union (Unia, Syna).

Because there is no sector CBA and experience barely brings more pay, in retail the employer and the negotiation decide. Whoever knows the right levers can raise their earnings noticeably. Here are the most effective ones, ordered by impact:

Genau der Punkt, Franziska. Die Unia-Forderung ist eine Kampagne und nicht geltend, aber die publizierten Firmen-GAV-Floors von Migros (4'300) und Coop (4'200) sind konkrete, zitierbare Anker. Wer die kennt, verhandelt nicht mehr im Nebel. Viel Erfolg.
Die Arbeitgeber-Lotterie kenne ich aus erster Hand. Im Kleinladen vorher hatte ich 3'800, seit ich bei der Migros bin, sind es dank GAV 4'300 garantiert. Gleiches Können, gleiche Kasse, 500 Franken mehr im Monat, nur wegen des Logos an der Tür. Wer im Detailhandel den Lohn drücken will, geht dorthin, wo es keinen GAV gibt.
Die Regional-Zahlen treffen mich mitten ins Herz. Ich arbeite im Wallis im Verkauf und verdiene rund 36'000, meine Schulkollegin macht dieselbe Arbeit in Luzern für über 54'000. Gleiches EFZ, gleiche Kasse, gleiche Kundschaft, nur ein anderer Kanton. Diese 18'000 Franken Unterschied im Jahr habe ich vorher nie so schwarz auf weiss gesehen.
