Sunday shopping in Zurich: four Sundays, and the most surprising one is not in Advent
✓ Checked at the source · as of 14 September 2026
Almost every list shows the December dates and stops there. What is missing is exactly the date nobody in Zurich expects — and the explanation for an Advent Sunday absent from the calendar that the neighbouring city does offer.

Each bar is a documented trading day. Dark = this city, light = the nearest ones. Sunday trading clusters in Advent — but not all of it does, and two cities on the same date need not share the same hours.

🛍️ Shopping on Sunday — what differs here
For most people, Zurich's trading Sunday is a December word. That is precisely why 31 May 2026 is the date people miss most reliably: it sits outside any Advent expectation, and it appears on none of the lists written in November.
The second point is the more interesting one, and it appears in no press release: the Zurich Advent run skips 13 December.
That Bern nevertheless designates four consecutive Sundays is no contradiction but the other half of the same arithmetic: there, Art. 11 para. 2 limits the individual shop to two of the four dates. Zurich settles it at municipal level, Bern at shop level — and both land on two. Neither authority states the connection; it only emerges when the acts are laid side by side. That is exactly what the Sunday Radar by ConvivaPlus is for.

🎯 Practical tips for this trading Sunday
- 1No statutory hours means checking with the shopUnlike Basel-Stadt, Zurich law sets no time. Convenient for the shops, less so for you: whether a business opens at 10 or only at 11 appears only on its own page.

In the canton of Zurich the ConvivaPlus Sunday trading calendar holds 202 entries. Nationwide there are 218 entries from 70 municipalities, 216 of them with a confirmed date. The ConvivaPlus verdict
Zurich is the case where the quantity is right and the distribution holds the surprise. Four permitted Sundays, four used — but one of them in May and the third Advent Sunday skipped. Anyone leaving this page with only the number four has not taken the essential part.
In practice: the May date belongs in the calendar as soon as the register publishes it, because it appears on no Advent list.
When we last checked: The data come from the cantonal economics office's public register; the city notifies, the canton compiles. On the absence of 13 December there is no official information — our explanation is a reading of the cited legal bases, not a confirmation by the city.

How we check
According to the ConvivaPlus calendar, 51 of the 216 confirmed events this season start earlier than this one and 164 later.
Every date comes from the organiser's, the municipality's or the canton's own site — never from an aggregator, never copied over from last year. Next to each source is the date we last read it.
