🛍️ Shopping on Sunday — what differs here
For most people, Zurich's trading Sunday is a December word. That is precisely why 31 May 2026 is the date people miss most reliably: it sits outside any Advent expectation, and it appears on none of the lists written in November.
The second point is the more interesting one, and it appears in no press release: the Zurich Advent run skips 13 December. The city opens on 29 November and 6 December, jumps over the third Advent Sunday and resumes on 20 December. In Bern, less than two hours away by train, all four December Sundays are designated. ⛔ The city does not say why it skips. What the sources do say: the cantonal labour inspectorate's letter to municipalities explicitly names «at most two Sundays in a row», citing Art. 20 para. 1 of the Labour Act. With 29 November and 6 December that pair is used up — a 13 December would be the third in a row.
That Bern nevertheless designates four consecutive Sundays is no contradiction but the other half of the same arithmetic: there, Art. 11 para. 2 limits the individual shop to two of the four dates. Zurich settles it at municipal level, Bern at shop level — and both land on two. Neither authority states the connection; it only emerges when the acts are laid side by side. Ich han jahrelang gmeint, Sunntigsverchauf sig nur im Dezämber. Dass Züri au am 31. Mai eine hät, han ich zum erschte Mal ide Zitig gläse — und da wars scho verbi.
Wichtig für alle, die von ausserhalb kommen: Das ist eine Gemeindesache. Dietikon hat andere Daten als die Stadt Zürich, und beide sind im selben Kanton. Wer «Kanton Zürich» googelt, findet die Tabelle mit allen — aber niemand sagt einem, dass es sie gibt.
