The fastest thank-you templates for an invitation

The finding that surprises almost everyone: in Swiss German, people say thank you in French. Of the 59 Swiss German templates in our generator, 34 say «Merci», whether «Merci vielmal», «Merci viumau» or «Merci vielmol». In the 122 Standard German templates the word appears only 2 times. The Duden dictionary even labels «merci» as «besonders schweizerisch», especially Swiss. For your reply that means: a «Merci vilmal» in the chat sounds local, a «Vielen herzlichen Dank» sounds like a letter. And neither needs a long text. Warm, formal, humorous, short — and Swiss German

Most people assume formal means long. According to the ConvivaPlus tone compass, it's the other way round: a warm template runs to a median of 37 words, a formal one only 33. Warmth costs more words than correctness, because it has to name something concrete, the cake, the evening, the looking forward. The formal thank-you gets by on set phrases. So the biggest mistake isn't length, it's the wrong tone: a casual «Cool, I'm in!» to a business partner lands as badly as a stiff «Dear Sir or Madam» to your best friend. When choosing: 📱 Short means short in Standard German, 🇨🇭 Swiss German is the language. Both are equally brief (median 13 and 14 words), but only one also works in an email to the tax office. Thank you in Swiss German: «Merci» instead of «Danke»

Swiss German is the one tone no template collection outside Switzerland can offer, and it's no niche case: in the German-speaking region, 85 % of the population aged 15 and over regularly use Swiss German according to the Federal Statistical Office, which explicitly counts written exchanges by text message and on social media (Survey on Language, Religion and Culture 2024). Nor is it a single language: the same word for «invitation» is spelt «Iiladig» (Zurich, Central and Eastern Switzerland), «Ylading» (Bern) and «Yyladig» (Basel) in our templates, because every region writes the way it speaks. These texts stay in dialect in every language version, because a translated dialect template is no longer one.

Thank and accept, in one sentence

Most searched of all: thanking and accepting in one go. The two belong together and feel most natural when you don't split them. The formula: first the thanks, then the clear acceptance, and optionally the question of whether you should bring something. That way the host knows straight away where they stand.

5 rules for a thank-you that lands

The reason you keep putting off your thank-you has been disproved. When psychologists Amit Kumar (University of Texas) and Nicholas Epley (University of Chicago) had people write short thank-you letters in 2018, the writers consistently underestimated how surprised and pleased the recipients would be, and overestimated how awkward they would feel (Kumar & Epley, «Psychological Science»). If you hesitate, you're hesitating over a misjudgement. The five rules turn that into practice: it isn't the fine words that decide, it's the timing and a single personal half-sentence.

   1. Speed beats polishThe biggest lever isn't the wording, it's the clock. A clumsy «So happy, thank you!» that same evening warms more than the perfectly polished sentence three days later, because it lands while the joy is still real.

   2. One detail beats a thousand platitudes«Thanks for everything» washes right past. «Thanks for baking the vegan cake specially» sticks. A single concrete detail proves you were really there, instead of just being polite.

   3. Never leave the host guessingThe most common mistake is thanking someone and forgetting to accept or decline. Your host is counting seats, portions, drinks. A thank-you without a clear «I'll be there» or «I can't make it» is only half a message.

   4. Pick the channel first, then the toneThe question isn't only how warm, but where: voice message, card or call. A «Dear Madam» on WhatsApp sounds as off as a «Hey there» in a work email. The channel already sets the tone.
