Thank you, teacher: notes for the card, and the Swiss gift rules behind them
A pooled gift card feels like the safest end-of-year present: neutral, practical, no guessing. In Switzerland it can be exactly the wrong choice: in Basel-Stadt, teachers are advised not to accept vouchers at all, however small. How much a teacher in your canton may actually accept is what the ConvivaPlus Gift Limit Check shows: nine cantons, every rule read at its source, not on a parenting blog. 🎁 Teacher gift: what Swiss teachers may accept
A gift card looks like the most neutral present there is. Yet it is exactly what the Basel-Stadt teachers’ synod (Freiwillige Schulsynode) explicitly advises against: cash and shopping vouchers are what people most associate with buying favour. A bottle of wine, a book, a bunch of flowers or chocolate, by contrast, are named as acceptable gifts.
This isn’t a Basel quirk but a principle: teachers at Swiss state schools are public employees of the canton or municipality, and a ban on accepting gifts applies to them, with exceptions. It isn’t about distrusting parents; it protects teachers, who give marks and make recommendations for the next school level and must never appear open to influence. How wide the exception is, each canton decides for itself.
Those differences are what the ConvivaPlus Gift Limit Check shows. For nine cantons we read the rule where it actually sits: staff act, ordinance, practice FAQ. Six cantons have a rule; for Vaud, Geneva and St. Gallen state schools we found none specific to teachers. And the result breaks a second expectation: only two cantons name an amount in francs at all, and those two are four times apart. This table paraphrases the law; none of it is available in an official English version.

Method of the ConvivaPlus review: checked on 17.09.2026, every row at its source (legal text or practice FAQ), never in a guide; German and Italian originals paraphrased here, as no official English version exists. A limit we could not read ourselves is not in the table. We found no teacher-specific rule for Vaud, Geneva or state schools in St. Gallen, which does not prove none exists. Under federal criminal law, minor advantages that are customary in social life are not punishable (Art. 322decies Swiss Criminal Code).

Pick the occasion, then the tone, and the note is ready to copy. «Next» shows more variations. At the top you can switch recipient if the card isn’t for the teacher.
One tip for any card: swap the word «patience» for the moment you saw it. A teacher reads «Thank you for your patience» twenty times. She reads «Thank you for not getting cross the day the gym bag went missing» exactly once.

✨ Short notes for the teacher
One sentence does more than you think. In a University of Chicago study (Kumar & Epley, 2018), people writing thank-you letters underestimated how positive recipients would feel and overestimated how awkward it would be. For the tag on a bouquet, a WhatsApp to the class teacher or the back of a drawing, one sentence you truly mean is enough.

Of nine Swiss cantons checked, only two name a franc amount for gifts to teachers, and they are four times apart: CHF 200 in Bern, CHF 50 in Basel-Stadt.
🎒 End of school year: the card before summer
The Swiss school year ends in late June or early July depending on the canton. A tip: hand the card over the day before the last day. On the last day, flowers, cards and hugs pile up; the day before, yours actually gets read.

🇨🇭 Swiss German: thank you in dialect
You can’t misspell Swiss German: the dialects have no official spelling, only recommendations such as the Dieth system from 1938. «Merci vilmal» or «merci viumau», whatever sounds like home is right. A card in Swiss German shows you’ve made an effort with the local language. These notes are deliberately left in dialect, with the region marked, so a Bernese note doesn’t end up in a Zurich classroom. Ask your child to read it aloud first: they usually know exactly how it should sound.

👋 Teacher farewell: moving up and retirement
A farewell is the one moment a longer note fits. When a child moves to middle or secondary level, a relationship of two or three years often ends. Looking back («When our child first came to your class…») says more than any adjective.
For a retirement, think of the whole career: many Swiss teachers have taught generations, sometimes the parents of today’s pupils. If that’s true for you, put it in the card.

✍️ Writing the card: four sentences
The biggest worry is unfounded. In the same Chicago study, writers feared their words wouldn’t be quite right. Recipients rated the letters just as positively for wording as for warmth. Saying thanks doesn’t require brilliance, just one concrete detail.
How to write a card that doesn’t sound like every other one on the desk:
- Greeting: «Dear Ms Meier», or «Dear Sandra» if everyone is on first-name terms. In Swiss schools, children often call younger-level teachers by first name; follow what your child does.
- A moment: the school trip, the play, the day something finally clicked. One concrete moment is the heart of the card.
- The thanks: not «for everything», but for one thing. Patience, humour, trust, an open door.
- The close: a wish for the holidays or the new class, then the signature, ideally in your child’s handwriting.
✏️ Written by the child: lines for little hands
For a teacher, a wobbly card from the child is often worth more than the most polished note from the parents. Give your child a start and leave a gap: «My favourite thing was …». Whatever ends up there definitely didn’t come from the internet. More lines for children are in the thank you for a gift templates.

⚠️ Mistakes to avoid when thanking a teacher
These five missteps turn a kind thank-you into an awkward moment:
- Cash or gift cards, even small ones: exactly what the Basel school synod advises against.
- An expensive individual gift just before a school-level recommendation. It puts the teacher in an awkward position, however innocent the intention.
- A card only for the class teacher when a special-needs teacher worked closely with your child. A second card costs nothing.
- A note that only talks about marks. Teachers want to hear what changed in your child, not which number is on the report.
- Criticism in the thank-you card. If something needs discussing, it belongs in a parent meeting.

Als Lehrerin kann ich das nur bestätigen: Das Schönste, was ich je bekommen habe, war eine Zeichnung mit «Du bisch di Bescht». Aber bitte kein teures Einzelgeschenk kurz vor dem Übertritt, das ist für uns wirklich unangenehm, auch wenn es lieb gemeint ist.
Danke für die Sicht von der anderen Seite des Pults, Corinne! Genau darum steht dieser Punkt bei den Fehlern, die man vermeiden sollte.
Leider fehlt für Basel-Landschaft eine Frankengrenze. Bei uns im Elternrat hiess es immer CHF 100, aber woher das kommt, konnte mir niemand sagen.
Guter Punkt, Markus. Die CHF 100 werden einem kantonalen Handbuch zugeschrieben, das beim Prüfen nicht abrufbar war. Darum fehlt die Zahl in der Tabelle: Wir zeigen nur, was wir an der Fundstelle selbst gelesen haben.
Da noi la legge non prevede nemmeno un’eccezione scritta per i piccoli regali. In classe facciamo sempre un disegno collettivo e un biglietto, e alla maestra piace di più.
