Wedding thank-you cards: 140+ templates for the card

Eighty thank-you cards after the wedding, and from 1 January 2027 each one costs more: A-Post CHF 1.40 instead of 1.20, CHF 16 extra for eighty cards, as Swiss Post agreed with the Price Supervisor. Posting before New Year saves more than time. Here are over 140 ready-made wedding thank-you texts: for gifts, money, the long journey, witnesses, parents, helpers, warm, formal, humorous, short or in Swiss German. Pick the guest type and the tone, copy, add your own line.
The fastest thank-you texts for the wedding
You thank your parents almost twice as fully as the officiant. According to the ConvivaPlus tone compass, thank-yous to the parents have a median of 39 words, those to the officiant or minister 23. Whoever carried you gets sentences, whoever had a moment on stage gets one. That's exactly why the pile of cards so often sits there after the wedding: each card asks for its own detail. The shortcut isn't finer wording, it's naming the one detail per guest. A two-liner with one concrete touch beats any polished phrase. These short templates fit almost any guest, as a card, by WhatsApp or with the photo card:
- 💗 «From the heart, thank you for sharing our most beautiful day with us!»
- 🎩 «For your presence and your kind wishes at our wedding, we thank you warmly.»
- 📱 «Thank you so much for celebrating with us! It meant so much to us. … & …»
- 🇨🇭 «Merci vielmal, dass du bi eus gfiiret hesch! Es het eus so gfreut. … & …»
Notice the difference? All three say the same thing, thanks plus joy, but in a different tone. That's exactly what you steer in the template generator just below: click the guest type, click the tone, copy the text, and make it unmistakable with a line of your own.

The biggest mistake isn't length, it's the wrong tone. A casual «Awesome, thanks!» to a great-aunt lands as badly as a stiff «Dear Sir or Madam» to your best friend. And the channel is part of the tone: for the close crowd a warm WhatsApp often warms more than the formal card, for older guests, suppliers and wider family a card fits better. When choosing in the generator: 📱 Short means short in Standard German, 🇨🇭 Swiss German is the language. Both are brief (median 18 and 18 words). The table shows when each tone fits, and what the compass counted for each:
| Tone | When it fits | Templates | Median | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 💗 Warm | Family, close friends, witnesses | 42 | 41 | «From the heart, thank you for being there!» |
| 🎩 Formal | older guests, vendors, professional | 20 | 34 | «For your presence, we thank you warmly.» |
| 😄 Humorous | best friends, the party crew, relaxed settings | 19 | 39 | «Thanks for celebrating as if you'd got married!» |
| 📱 Short (WhatsApp) | young guests, spontaneous thanks, little time | 22 | 18 | «Thanks for celebrating with us!» |
| 🇨🇭 Swiss German | German-speaking Switzerland, young guests, chat and voice messages | 38 | 18 | «Merci vilmal, dass du bi eus gfiiret hesch! … & …» |
How the ConvivaPlus tone compass counts: each of the 141 templates in this collection belongs to exactly one of 5 tones. For each tone we count the templates and their length in words and take the median, the same method as the ConvivaPlus Thank-You Index. It's recalculated from the data on every page view. It's an analysis of our templates, not a survey.
Thank you in Swiss German: «Merci, dass du bi eus gfiiret hesch»
In Swiss German, people say thank you in French. Of the 38 dialect templates in this collection, 31 say «Merci», in the 103 Standard German ones not once. The Duden dictionary labels «merci» «besonders schweizerisch». And dialect is no fringe case: in the German-speaking region, 85 % of the population aged 15 and over regularly use Swiss German according to the Federal Statistical Office, which explicitly counts written exchanges by text message and on social media (Survey on Language, Religion and Culture 2024). For the young crowd it's often the warmer choice, for the great-aunt in Lausanne it isn't. Templates from Zurich, Bern, Basel, Central and Eastern Switzerland sit side by side, untranslated.
The ConvivaPlus thank-you matrix: who gets which line?
The deadline is generous, the postage no longer is: Swiss Post agreed with the Price Supervisor that from 1 January 2027 an A-Post letter costs CHF 1.40 instead of 1.20, and a standard letter only goes up to 50 grams instead of 100. For 80 cards that's CHF 16. Post the cards before New Year and you still pay the old rate. More important than postage is the key line: thanking the gift-giver for their journey and the far-travelled for their gift confuses what matters. The ConvivaPlus matrix gives each guest type its key line, with a deadline. The deadlines are rules of thumb from the editors, not a study:
| Guest type | The one personal key line | Window | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| All guests (base card) | the shared joy + a memory moment | up to 3 months | always sign personally |
| Gift-givers | name the specific gift | 4–8 weeks | for money, never the amount |
| Far-travelled | acknowledge the journey and effort | up to 3 months | the travel link makes it warm |
| Witnesses & helpers | name the specific role or help | 2–4 weeks | personal, no serial card |
| Parents | what they carried and made possible | soon, often spoken | the card still stays |
| Absent (with a message) | the missing and the thanks for the wishes | up to 3 months | «you were in our hearts» |
5 rules for a thank-you that lands
The reason the pile of cards sits there has been disproved. When psychologists Amit Kumar (University of Texas) and Nicholas Epley (University of Chicago) had people write short thank-you letters in 2018, the writers consistently underestimated how surprised and pleased the recipients would be, and overestimated how awkward they would feel (Kumar & Epley, «Psychological Science»). The five rules turn that into practice, and the biggest hurdle, remembering months later who brought what, gets a rule of its own.
- 11. Keep a thank-you register, right at the celebrationThe most important and most overlooked trick: note during or right after the wedding who gave what, who made the long journey and who helped. Within the three-month window nobody remembers who brought the salad bowl and who the envelope, and that's when the card turns generic. The ConvivaPlus thank-you register turns 80 identical cards into 80 personal ones.
- 22. One concrete detail beats a thousand clichés«Thanks for everything» washes past. «The espresso machine is already running every morning» or «your journey from Geneva delighted us so much» sticks. A single concrete detail per guest proves you really paid attention, instead of just being polite.
- 33. For a money gift, never name the amountThe most common awkwardness. «Thanks for the 300 francs» puts the figure centre stage and reads like a receipt. The tactful version is «Thank you for your generous gift», rounded off with what you plan to do with it: «It goes straight into our honeymoon.»
- 44. Use the window, but not as an excuseA few weeks is usual, and because of the honeymoon up to three months counts as normal, that's generous. Use that time for personal cards, but don't put them off forever. Witnesses and helpers appreciate an earlier thank-you (2 to 4 weeks).
- 55. The photo card too needs a personal lineThe printed photo card with standard text is practical, but it quickly feels mass-produced. Add a single handwritten line only you would write for that guest. This one handwritten addition turns the serial card into your thank-you.
The warm wedding thank-you is the longest: in the ConvivaPlus tone compass, 41 words at the median against 34 for the formal one. Warmth names a detail per guest.
Register, latecomers, cash gifts and the photo card, mastered
For a large cash gift, not every canton looks over your shoulder: Schwyz and Obwalden levy no gift tax at all. That matters, for instance, with a godparent contributing to a home: Lucerne does not tax gifts (though Lucerne municipalities may tax gifts to descendants made in the five years before death as inheritance), and between spouses a gift is tax-free in every canton. The other cantons set their own allowances; the overview is kept by the Federal Tax Administration (as of 1 January 2025). Not every thank-you is equally easy. Faced with eighty cards, the thank-you register helps: the little list from the celebration that turns generic cards into personal ones. If your thanks come late: apologise briefly, without getting lost in excuses, then thank warmly. For witnesses, helpers, vendors and guests who couldn't come, the generator offers templates. And if it isn't about your wedding: to thank a single person for a gift, the guide «Thank you for a gift» provides the words, to thank after your birthday the guide «Thank you for the birthday wishes», and if you're invited to a party and want to accept or decline, you'll find all the texts in the guide «Thank you for the invitation». Which collection calls for which length is compared in the ConvivaPlus Thank-You Index. To thank helpers outside the wedding, the texts are in the collection Dankschreiben für Unterstützung (thanks for support), and for any other occasion in the general Dankesschreiben Vorlage.
