🕯️ Candle dipping

Candle dipping Uster: the only place with two evenings until ten

Candle dipping is almost everywhere an afternoon activity: by 5.30pm the pots are cold, and anyone working until seven arrives too late. Uster is the exception – twice, on a Friday.

Key takeaway
In Uster the dataset records 2 offerings. The one at the Neuwies church is documented: nine published opening days from 8 November 2026 to 22 November 2026 – including two Fridays from 6pm to 10pm, the latest dipping hour in the entire survey. Prices: paraffin CHF 3.60, beeswax CHF 4.60 per 100 grams. The second offering at the Zentralstrasse parish house has no 2026 date yet.

Two Friday evenings until 22:00 — the latest dipping time in the whole survey, and the only place to offer it twice (the Guthirt youth centre in Zurich-Wipkingen reaches it on a single evening). Anyone who only has time after work finds a window here that barely exists anywhere else.

Good to know
  • Prices: paraffin wax CHF 3.60/100 g, beeswax CHF 4.60/100 g.
  • Nine published opening days across two weekends — in between it is not open continuously.

Uster has two independent candle-dipping offerings — the Neuwies church and this one. The second has no date yet for 2026.

Good to know
  • ⛔ As of 08.09.2026 the parish still lists last year's dates on this page. We do NOT carry them forward. As soon as the parish publishes 2026, the date will appear here.
  • Published structure of the offering (without a year): first a week for schools, then around two weeks of public candle dipping; on Wednesdays also in the evening.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart

Anyone wanting to dip candles after work has a problem in Switzerland: most offerings are built around children and afternoons and close between 5pm and 6.30pm. In the whole survey exactly two places reach 10pm – and only one offers it twice: the Neuwies church in Uster, on both Fridays of its run. The Guthirt youth room in Zurich-Wipkingen also reaches 10pm, but on a single evening.

The second point is the structure of the run. Uster does not run continuously but on nine published days across two weekends – closed in between. And the days differ sharply: Sundays 12pm to 6.30pm, Wednesdays only from 2pm, Fridays 6pm to 10pm, the last Sunday only until 3.30pm. Read a run instead of a day calendar here and you will very likely plan wrong.

And the third: Uster has two independent offerings, not one. Alongside the Neuwies church, the Reformed Church of Uster runs a second at the Zentralstrasse parish house. It has no 2026 date yet – as of 8 September 2026 the parish still showed last year's dates. We do not carry them over. Only the structure is known: first a week for schools, then around two weeks open to the public, with Wednesday evenings on top.

🎯 How to plan the visit without arriving at a cold wax pot

In Uster the individual day decides, not the run. Four points make the difference.

  1. 1
The two Fridays are the actual offeringFrom 6pm to 10pm – almost nowhere else in Switzerland offers that. Anyone in work without free afternoons plans the visit around one of those two evenings.
  2. 2
Nine days, not two weeksThe run spans two weekends, but it is only open on nine published days. In between the pots are cold. The day list is in the dates block above.
  3. 3
The final day ends three hours earlierThe closing Sunday only runs to 3.30pm instead of 6.30pm. Anyone keeping the last day in reserve loses half the afternoon.
  4. 4
Uster's second offering is not the same – and still openThe Neuwies church and the Zentralstrasse parish house are two separate events from two different organisers. The second has no 2026 date; we list it as open rather than reusing last year.

🗺️ Where this session sits in the season

In the canton of Zurich the dataset records 24 sessions – more than any other canton. Uster falls early in the season: by the time its last day is over, most of the neighbourhood offerings in the city of Zurich have not even started.

Nationally the densest day is 29 November 2026, with 17 sessions running at once; the season spans 2 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. On that densest day Uster is already closed.

🏆 The ConvivaPlus verdict

The ConvivaPlus verdict

🕙 Two Fridays until 10pm📅 Nine days, not two weeks⚠️ 1 of 2 still undated

For working people without free afternoons, Uster is the canton's best address – and practically its only one. Two Friday evenings until 10pm, with prices in the lower third of the national range: anyone wanting to dip after work has barely another option.

For a spontaneous visit the place is awkward. Nine separate days with four different time windows across two weekends demand a look at the day calendar – and anyone keeping the closing Sunday in reserve loses three hours. If you want reliability, go to Hechtplatz.

Freshness note: Uster's second session at the Zentralstrasse parish house had no 2026 date as of 8 September 2026. It is flagged as open above; as soon as the parish publishes, the date will appear here. The basis is the ConvivaPlus-Kerzenzieh-Kalender 2026: every entry was read individually at the organiser for the ConvivaPlus survey — this ConvivaPlus verdikt rests on nothing else.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • 10pm exists twice in the country: in Uster on two Fridays, at the Guthirt youth room in Zurich-Wipkingen on a single evening. Everywhere else closes by 9pm at the latest.
  • The last day is shorter: the closing Sunday ends at 3.30pm instead of 6.30pm – three hours less than every other Sunday.
  • Two offerings, two organisers: the Neuwies church and the Zentralstrasse parish house are not the same event at two addresses but two independent events.

💡Did you know?

In all of Switzerland there are exactly two places where candles are dipped until 10pm – and only Uster offers it on two evenings. For anyone working until seven, it is the region's only realistic address.
