Candle dipping Stäfa: what two denominations do together on one hill

In Stäfa the children dip their candles between two churches — the reformed parish of Stäfa-Hombrechtikon and the Roman Catholic parish of St. Verena host the event together. Locally nobody mentions it any more. Measured against the rest of Switzerland, it is the exception.

Key takeaway
Candle dipping in Stäfa takes place on the Kirchbühl and is hosted by the reformed parish of Stäfa-Hombrechtikon together with the Roman Catholic parish of St. Verena. ⛔ No date for 2026 has been published — the parish so far names only a contact person. That makes Stäfa one of 13 entries in our dataset without a documented date.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart

There is a sentence you hear all over Switzerland that is almost never true: «here we do it together.» In Stäfa it is true. The Kirchbühl session belongs to neither parish alone — reformed and Catholic run it jointly, year after year, without anyone selling it as a feature.

We counted, curious how special that really is. The result: of the 38 candle-dipping sessions recorded in Switzerland, exactly four have an interdenominational host — Zurich-Oerlikon, Stäfa, Bern-Nord and St. Gallen. Barely one in ten. Anyone assuming ecumenical hosting is the norm is off by an order of magnitude.

And then there is the bad news we are not writing away: for 2026 there is no date. The parish so far publishes only a contact person. We could put last year's date there and the page would look more complete. We do not — what comes of that can be seen one municipality further along the lake in Thalwil, where the session is not happening at all in 2026.

🎯 How to plan the visit without arriving at a cold wax pot

Until the date is published, only prior knowledge helps. Three points for Stäfa.

  1. 1
Kirchbühl — the place is half the eventDipping happens up on the Kirchbühl, between the two churches, looking out over Lake Zurich. Anyone who has been once comes back for the setting.
  2. 2
The date comes lateAs of 8 September 2026 the parish names only a contact person, no date. Anyone who must plan firmly asks there rather than waiting for a publication.
  3. 3
Two hosts means two channelsThe event is carried by both parishes — information may appear first on the reformed or on the Catholic site. Checking both is worth it.

On the right-hand shore itself the dataset records no second dated session.

Nationally 25 of 38 entries have a documented date. The densest day of the season is 29 November 2026, with 17 sessions running at once.

⛪ Ecumenically hosted🌅 Kirchbühl above the lake⛔ 2026 date open

For families on the right-hand shore the Kirchbühl is the session with the finest setting — and one of the few where the question of denomination is never even raised. Anyone who grew up there comes back with their own children.

For anyone who needs a fixed date, Stäfa is currently the wrong address: without a published date there is only asking. Plannable alternatives within driving distance: Zurich Hechtplatz and the Uetliberg.

Freshness note: ⛔ No date is published for 2026; the parish so far names only a contact person. We do not carry last year's date forward. Checked on 8 September 2026.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • Ecumenical is rarer than assumed: counted, 4 of 38 recorded sessions have an interdenominational host — Oerlikon, Stäfa, Bern-Nord, St. Gallen.
  • Two hosts, two channels: information may appear first on the reformed or on the Catholic site. Checking only one means missing half.
  • The place carries the event: Kirchbühl means a view over Lake Zurich — for many families the real reason to walk up the same hill every year.
