The canton of Lucerne allows two Sunday openings a year and is the only canton we have read that prescribes a month: one has to fall in December. In 2026 the city of Lucerne goes further — it puts both into Advent, a week apart.

🛍️ Shopping on Sunday — what differs here
Lucerne is interesting twice over, and both times it is about a number that is not four. First: the canton uses 2 of four possible Sundays. Art. 19 para. 6 of the Labour Act would allow more; Lucerne's law stays at two — the same choice as Basel-Stadt, Schaffhausen and Valais.
Second, the law prescribes not only the number but a point in time: one of the Sundays has to fall in December. Among the 12 cantons we have read, it is the only provision that requires a MONTH without fixing the days themselves. The second Sunday would be free — in spring, at the start of the season, for a city festival.
The city of Lucerne does not leave it free.
