Sunday shopping in Lucerne: two a year — and one of them must be in December
The canton of Lucerne does not use up the federal ceiling: two instead of four. In return it prescribes something no other canton we have read fixes this way — when at least one of the two must fall.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
The dates below stand as the responsible authority published them for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing is published, that is stated too.

🛍️ Shopping on Sunday — what differs here
Lucerne is interesting twice over, and both times it comes down to a number that is not four. First: the canton uses 2 of the four possible Sundays. Art. 19 para. 6 of the Labour Act would allow more; the Lucerne act stays at two — the same decision as Basel-Stadt, Schaffhausen and Valais.
Second, and this is Lucerne's distinctive move: the act prescribes not only the number but also a moment. «One of which must fall in the month of December» — among the 12 cantons we have read, that is the only one demanding a MONTH without fixing the days itself (Solothurn and Basel-Landschaft name the Sundays and thereby fix the month implicitly). In practice: a Lucerne Advent Sunday is near certain even while the date is unpublished. The second day is free — it may fall in spring or likewise in December.
⛔ What we do not have for 2026 is the date itself. Permission rests with the municipal council, and nothing was published at the time of our survey. We therefore carry the Lucerne page as open. That is not a weakness but the honest state of things — and a reason to come back: as soon as the city publishes the date, it will stand here with its source. In the meantime the Sunday Radar by Conviva Plus shows the rule rather than a guess.

🎯 Practical tips for this trading Sunday
Three things that help in Lucerne while no date is published.
- 1A December date is prescribed by law§ 9 para. 4 requires one of the two Sundays to fall in December. Planning for Advent in Lucerne is therefore very likely right — only the exact date is still missing.
- 2Check with the municipal council, not the cantonPermission rests with the municipality. The city of Lucerne, Kriens and Emmen may have different days — there is no cantonal list that answers for all of them.
- 3Only 2 a yearThe canton does not use up the federal ceiling of four. Miss one and only one remains — the margin is half that of the canton of Zurich.
- 4No statutory hoursUnlike Basel-Stadt or Bern, Lucerne prescribes no time. Each shop's own hours apply; the shop's page is a more reliable source here than the act.
🗺️ Nearby — other cities
Nationwide the ConvivaPlus Sunday trading survey holds 217 entries from 70 municipalities, 212 with a confirmed date. Lucerne is among the municipalities for which nothing has yet been published for 2026. The documented season of the others runs from 25 January 2026 to 27 December 2026.
Of 26 cantons we have read 12 at source. Four of them stay below the federal ceiling — Lucerne, Basel-Stadt, Schaffhausen and Valais. All rules side by side sit on the Swiss overview.

Lucerne is the case where the rule is worth more than the missing date. We cannot name a date for 2026 — nothing is published, and a guess would be worth no more here than anywhere else. What we can name still makes planning possible: two Sundays, one of them necessarily in December, permitted by the municipal council.
In practice: anyone planning Lucerne's Advent is very likely right — just not to the day. And anyone coming from the agglomeration checks their own municipality, because permission sits there and not with the canton.
Freshness note: This page carries no confirmed date for 2026. The rule comes from § 9 para. 4 of the cantonal act, quoted in the Lucerne police information sheet; as soon as the city publishes a date, we will add it with its source.

- ◆The only canton prescribing a month. § 9 para. 4 requires one of the two trading Sundays to «fall in the month of December». Among the 12 cantons we read, many regulate the number — only Lucerne regulates the timing.
- ◆Two instead of four, and that is a decision. Art. 19 para. 6 would allow four permit-free Sundays. Lucerne stays at two, like Basel-Stadt, Schaffhausen and Valais. On this subject the interesting figure is not the ceiling but how far a canton uses it.
