🕐 Regular opening hours 2026

The Sihlpost at Kasernenstrasse 97, 8004 Zurich was reopened in December 2025 after a comprehensive modernization. It is Switzerland's most modern post office – and one of the few with Sunday opening. For commuters changing at Zurich main station, it's reachable in 5 minutes on foot. What many don't know: across all of Switzerland, only a handful of post offices are open on weekends – and even fewer on Sundays. The Sihlpost is therefore an absolute exception in the Swiss postal network.

🛎️ Services & offerings

The Sihlpost offers as a flagship branch the complete postal range plus services not available in regular branches. Since the modernization in December 2025, there are no more glass screens at the counter – instead, open consultation zones, an AI-powered translation tool for over 100 languages, video counters and partner areas for PostFinance, Sympany and more.

For comparison: most of the approximately 800 post offices in Switzerland now only have reduced opening hours and no longer offer all services. Many have been converted to postal agencies in grocery stores in recent years. The Sihlpost goes the opposite way – more service, longer hours, more modern infrastructure. It is thus the counterpoint to the trend of shrinking postal networks in Switzerland. Anyone living in the Canton of Zurich who needs comprehensive postal service can't avoid the Sihlpost.

Sihlpost Quiz

3 questions – test your knowledge

1.Who designed the Sihlpost?

2.How many post offices does Swiss Post still operate?

3.Until what time is the My Post 24 machine accessible?

📜 History: from the world's most modern post office to Switzerland's most modern branch

The Sihlpost was built between 1927 and 1930 by architects Adolf and Heinrich Brüm. The load-bearing structure was designed by Robert Maillart – the legendary Swiss bridge construction pioneer whose Salginatobel Bridge is now a UNESCO World Heritage site of civil engineering. The reinforced concrete skeleton structure in the New Building style was at its opening the most modern post office in the world: 123 meters long, 6 floors, mushroom-shaped floor slabs without a single expansion joint. A building that caused an international sensation and is considered a milestone of Swiss engineering.

In the 1930s, the Sihlpost was the heart of Zurich's postal logistics – all mail in the canton was sorted here. With the advent of automated sorting centres, the building lost this function but remained as a branch. A first major renovation took place in the 1990s, before the comprehensive modernization of 2025 completely redesigned the interior – while fully preserving the listed facade and load-bearing structure.

Today the building is a listed monument. In addition to the post office, it houses the KV Business School Zurich, offices of Google Switzerland, and on the ground floor the Hiltl Sihlpost – where drinks are served over the original 1930s post counters. The building is thus a living piece of Zurich's urban history, uniting architecture, culinary arts and public service under one roof.

Why Sunday opening is so special

Sunday opening for a post office is an absolute rarity in Switzerland. Swiss labour law fundamentally prohibits Sunday work – exceptions only apply to businesses at heavily frequented transport hubs such as train stations and airports. The Sihlpost benefits from its location directly at Zurich main station and therefore falls under this special regulation. Of the approximately 800 post offices nationwide, only a handful are open on Sundays. According to Swiss Post's 2024 annual report, the company processed around 183 million passengers and generated revenue of CHF 7,6 billion. Anyone who is out on the weekend and still needs to send a parcel will hardly find an alternative.

Comparison: Sihlpost vs. other major post offices

Compared with other major Swiss post offices, the Sihlpost clearly stands out. The branch at Schanzenpost Bern (near Bern station) also has long weekday opening hours, but closes on Sundays. The Fraumünsterpost Zurich was closed in 2023. The post office at Zurich Airport has Sunday opening but offers a significantly smaller range. The Sihlpost is the only one combining full range, Sunday opening and state-of-the-art infrastructure at one location.

Context
Nearly 100 years of history: opened in 1930 as the world's most modern post office. Reopened in 2025 as Switzerland's most modern branch.

Beeindruckend.

Gehe seit Jahren sonntags hin. Tipp: My Post 24 ab 5 Uhr morgens, perfekt wenn man früh zum Flughafen muss.

Guter Tipp, Daniel! Für Frühaufsteher auch praktisch: die SBB-Spartageskarte ab 5 Uhr für CHF 29 – ideal in Kombination mit dem Sihlpost-Besuch.
