Zurich tax return 2026: online by March 31, 2027, on request until November 30, 2027
Zurich gives you until March 31, 2027 — 16 days more than Bern, 39 more than Neuchâtel. And if you ask before then, the tax office must grant you until November 30, 2027: up to 244 days of grace. The ConvivaPlus Tax Timetable works out your deadline live for all 26 cantons — with ZHprivateTax step by step below.

🧭 Zurich tax deadline: 16 days more than Bern
There is no Swiss tax return deadline — there are 26. Zurich wants it by March 31, 2027, like 13 other cantons. Bern wants it 16 days earlier, Neuchâtel even 39. According to the ConvivaPlus analysis of the 26 tax administrations, 4 cantons (Lucerne, Glarus, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Thurgau) print no fixed date at all, only your personal deadline on the form. The Tax Timetable below is set to Zurich — pick your canton to see the days left, how far you can extend and what it costs today.

📝 On request, the canton extends until November 30, 2027 at the latest.
⏳ Extended your tax return 2025? Your extension runs until November 30, 2026 (40 days left) — but only if you filed the request before the deadline.

📝 Zurich tax extension: until November 30, 2027
The same extension to November 30, 2027 costs CHF 30 in the cantons of Solothurn and Thurgau. Zurich publishes no fee, and the office must grant it if your request arrives before March 31, 2027. That is not in the guide but in a directive of the tax manual. The request goes to your municipality's tax office; some municipalities accept it online.
Requests filed in time must be granted up to 30 November of the year following the tax period at the latest. (paraphrase of the directive, which exists only in German)

💻 ZHprivateTax login: your tax bill before you file
Private Tax is dead — and the portal replacing it is older than most think: the canton of Zurich has run ZHprivateTax in the browser since 2013, paperless since 2021. With the 2025 tax period, the download software disappeared. You log in with AGOV, the Swiss authorities' login with two-factor confirmation — set up once, it works for other offices too.
The amount you will owe shows up in ZHprivateTax while you type, as a provisional tax calculation, not months later when the bill arrives. Enter your pillar 3a and the figure drops at once: in the city of Zurich, on a salary of CHF 80,000, by CHF 1,484. What else changed compared with the old software:
| With software and paper | In ZHprivateTax |
|---|---|
| Download and install software | runs in the browser, AGOV login |
| Type in salary and interest | pre-filled by the tax office |
| Scan receipts | phone photo straight into the portal |
| Learn the tax only from the bill | provisional calculation as you type |
| Print, sign, post | “File digitally”, confirmation by e-mail |
| Finish everything in one evening | save and carry on tomorrow |
📋 Filling in the return: six steps
One single field in these six steps is worth CHF 1'484 in the city of Zurich on a CHF 80'000 salary: pillar 3a in step 4. According to the ConvivaPlus analysis of the federal tax calculator, the same contribution saves CHF 2'015 in Neuchâtel but only CHF 773 in Zug. With your salary certificate and receipts as PDFs, you are done in under an hour. One special case first: if you live in Zurich during the week and go home at weekends, you fill in different fields as a weekly resident.
Step 4 decides the money, step 6 only your peace of mind. If you document actual professional expenses instead of the flat rate, a long commute pays off; pillar 3a alone saves up to CHF 2'500 on a CHF 120'000 salary, depending on canton. Which deductions pay off, with amounts: tax return 2026.
📎 Uploading receipts: the thinnest slip is worth the most
The thickest pile is usually the least useful: medical bills only count above 5% of your net income — on CHF 80'000, you carry the first CHF 4'000 yourself. The thin slips are worth more: salary certificate, 3a certificate, public-transport pass. Everything goes straight into the portal, by drag and drop or as a phone photo. Working from home? The Zurich rule is in the Zurich home office deduction.
💰 Zurich deductions: CHF 1'900 more travel costs than federal
On the same return, your commute counts twice, differently: Zurich cantonal tax allows up to CHF 5'200 in travel costs, federal tax only CHF 3'300. Same route, CHF 1'900 difference. For the flat rate on other professional expenses, though, Zurich follows the federal rule exactly, and "3% of net salary" only holds between CHF 66'667 and CHF 133'333 net salary: below that you get a fixed CHF 2'000, above it everything stops at CHF 4'000. Voluntary home office adds not one franc (Zurich home office deduction). If you live in Zurich during the week, you calculate as a weekly resident with your own deductions for room and meals.
🗺️ Deadlines in every canton: extensions from September 30 to December 15
Among the 9 cantons that publish a latest date for an extension on request, Grisons gives the shortest: until September 30. The longest: Fribourg, until December 15. Zurich sits in between with November 30. In 12 cantons the date means something else (no request needed, granted automatically, online only or free of charge), and 5 publish none. The table shows each canton's deadline, longest extension and portal, every row verified with the cantonal tax administration; «not stated» means the canton does not publish it, and we do not guess. How far apart the cantons are on the tax burden is shown by the tax comparison of all 26 cantons.

💡 Insider tips for ZHprivateTax
22 of 26 cantons accept the extension request online, centrally. Zurich does not: your municipal tax office is in charge, and the municipality decides whether it works online. That is what the ConvivaPlus analysis of the 26 tax administrations shows — and it is the first of four points hardly anyone knows.
