Candle dipping in Altdorf: a date from the booking calendar
Anyone searching for «candle dipping Uri» finds nothing — and then writes that the canton has no offering. We kept looking: the events and room-booking calendar of the Evangelical Reformed cantonal church of Uri, the same data service ref-uri.ch itself reads, lists «Kerzenziehen 2026» for Saturday 28 November. On the rendered agenda page the entry was not yet visible as of 12 September 2026.

The only date in this survey that was not on an events page but in the room-booking calendar behind it: «Kerzenziehen 2026», Saturday 28 November, hall, foyer and kitchen at once. The same system already carries the 2027 reservation — an event that blocks a room two years ahead.
- ⛔ This is how precise the evidence is, and how far it reaches: the cantonal church's events and room-booking calendar — the same data service ref-uri.ch itself reads — lists «Kerzenziehen 2026» for Saturday 28 November 2026 from 08:00 for the hall, foyer and kitchen at Bahnhofstrasse 29. On the rendered agenda page the entry was not yet visible as of 12 September 2026. Visitor opening hours and prices are NOT published; 08:00 is the start of the room booking, not a door opening. Ask the parish office before travelling (041 870 86 80).
- Published structure of an earlier edition, no guarantee for 2026: the Altdorf candle dipping ran in 2019 over six days in the youth room of the same building — set-up on Friday morning, then Saturday and Monday to Thursday with afternoon openings and two evenings until 21:00. For 2026 the calendar books exactly one day.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart
This page exists because we refused to accept a dead end. For the canton of Uri, search engines, tourist calendars and event portals return nothing on «candle dipping». One portal holds a newspaper piece from 2019 — six days in the youth room of the parish house, set-up on Friday morning, evening openings until 21:00. After that: silence.
The reason is technical and matters for all of Uri: the cantonal church renders its agenda page from an external data service. That service keeps two separate lists — a public events agenda and an events and room-booking calendar that also holds room reservations. What sits only in the second never appears on the website. And that is exactly where it sits: «Kerzenziehen 2026», Saturday 28 November 2026, hall, foyer and kitchen.
What that proves, and what it does not, we would rather say ourselves than leave open. Proven is: the event is scheduled for that day, by the holder itself, with three rooms blocked at once — that is not a meeting room, that is an operation. Not proven are the visitor hours. The calendar entry starts at eight in the morning; that is the start of the room booking, not a door opening. A candle dipping that opens to the public at eight does not exist anywhere in this survey.
And one more thing sits in that same calendar, and it is the most unusual figure on this page: 2027 is already reserved. An event that blocks a hall two years ahead is not winding down — it is firmly anchored in a building's yearly rhythm. Anyone missing 2026 can therefore plan 2027 with some justification.
What remains is the comparison that stings: in 2019 it ran over six days with evening openings. For 2026 exactly one day is booked. Whether the event has shrunk or the other days are simply not yet reserved, we do not know — and therefore do not write.

🎯 How to plan the visit without arriving at a cold wax pot
One Saturday, one building, three rooms — and a phone call that saves the trip. How to plan Altdorf.
- 1Phone before travelling: 041 870 86 80The day is booked, the visitor hours are not. For Altdorf a call to the cantonal church office is not an extra but the difference between an afternoon and a wasted drive. Office hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 08:30 to 11:30.
- 208:00 is the set-up, not the door openingThe calendar entry starts at eight. Across the whole survey no candle dipping opens to the public before ten. Anyone standing at the door at eight is standing in front of the set-up.
- 3One day instead of a week — plan a fallbackIn 2019 the event ran over six days. For 2026 a single Saturday is booked. Anyone who cannot make that day needs an alternative outside the canton: Uri carries no second candle-dipping session in our dataset.
- 42027 is already reservedThe same calendar carries a further candle-dipping reservation in the same building for late autumn 2027. Anyone planning a group long-term therefore has more certainty than with most sessions in this survey.
🗺️ Where this session sits in the season
Altdorf is the first and so far only entry for canton Uri in our candle-dipping dataset — the canton entered the survey with this page at all, which makes the first documented day in the canton 28 November 2026.
On the same day 20 further sessions are running outside the municipality; afterwards only 6 more begin anywhere in Switzerland. Anyone needing a fallback in central Switzerland finds the next addresses in Sarnen — there, too, without a published date — and in Lenzburg or Baden. Nationally 34 of 51 entries are documented, across 18 of 26 cantons; the densest day of the season is 28 November 2026, with 21 wax pots open at once.

Because many parishes render their agenda from an external data service that keeps two lists: a public events agenda and a booking calendar holding room reservations. What sits only in the second never appears on the site — the Uri date is exactly such a case.
Every verified candle-dipping session →The Höfe parish in Pfäffikon SZ has announced eight dipping days for 2027 — more than for 2026. In Altdorf a day for 2027 is likewise already reserved in the calendar.
Candle dipping Pfäffikon SZ →In Altdorf (UR), in Sarnen (OW, two sessions, both still without a date), in Stans (NW, in September, one hour, for unaccompanied children) and at the Vögeligärtli in Lucerne.

For families on the Uri valley floor this is the canton's only candle-dipping address — and this page is, as far as we can see, the only place on the web where its 2026 date appears at all. That the hall, the foyer and the kitchen are blocked at once argues for a proper operation rather than an hour of crafting.
But you have to phone ahead. The visitor hours are not published, and the eight o'clock in the calendar is the set-up. A call to the parish office (041 870 86 80, Tue/Wed/Thu 08:30–11:30) is not a precaution here but part of the planning.
Freshness note: ⛔ Documented is the DAY, not the visiting time. The source is the events and room-booking calendar of the Evangelical Reformed cantonal church of Uri — the same data service ref-uri.ch reads: entry «Kerzenziehen 2026», Saturday 28 November 2026 from 08:00 for hall, foyer and kitchen at Bahnhofstrasse 29, checked on 12 September 2026. On the rendered agenda page the entry was not yet visible that day. Visitor opening hours and prices are NOT published; 08:00 is the start of the room booking. The details of the 2019 edition (six days, youth room, evening openings) come from the Uristier-Anzeiger and do not apply to 2026.

- ◆Three rooms at once: hall, foyer and kitchen are blocked for the same day. That is the signature of an operation with refreshments, not of a crafting afternoon in one room.
- ◆2027 is already in the calendar: the same data service carries a further candle-dipping reservation in the same building for late autumn 2027. An event that blocks a hall two years ahead does not disappear soon.
- ◆Eight o'clock is the set-up: across the whole survey no candle dipping opens to the public before ten. Mistake the calendar time for a door opening and you arrive two hours early.

We did not find the 2026 Uri candle-dipping date on an events page but in the events and room-booking calendar of the cantonal church behind it: «Kerzenziehen 2026», Saturday 28 November, hall, foyer and kitchen at once. On the rendered agenda page it was not yet visible as of 12 September.
