Candle dipping in Stans: Switzerland's earliest wax pot burns in September

Everyone talks about Advent. In Stans they dip on a Wednesday afternoon in September — two months before a wax pot warms up anywhere else in Switzerland. One hour, six francs, and the children come on their own from the age of five. It is the earliest session in our entire survey and the only one outside Advent.

Key takeaway
Candle dipping at the Tellenmatt school in 6370 Stans, organised by the Frauen Gemeinschaft Stans: on 23 September 2026, in three fixed slots of one hour each — 13:30–14:30, 14:40–15:40 or 15:45–16:45. For children from age 5, unaccompanied. Cost CHF 6.00 per child and slot. ⛔ Registration is required and places are limited.

The earliest candle dipping in the entire survey — and the only one that does not fall in Advent but on a Wednesday afternoon in September. It is also the only one advertised expressly for children WITHOUT an adult: from age 5, on their own, for one booked hour — everywhere else the organiser requires an accompanying adult.

Good to know
  • For children from age 5, unaccompanied. Cost CHF 6.00 per child and slot — the only session in this survey charging a participation fee rather than a wax price; everywhere else you pay by weight or per candle. Registration is required; places are limited.
  • ⛔ A regional event calendar lists the same event at «Schulzentrum Turmatt». The organiser itself writes «Schulhaus Tellenmatt» — we follow the organiser.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart

Three things make this afternoon unique in our survey, and all three cut against what you expect from a candle-dipping session.

First the date. Of the 51 candle-dipping sessions we have recorded in Switzerland for 2026, exactly one falls outside Advent — this one. It is at the same time the earliest of all: the country's next wax pot will not warm up until early November, a good six weeks later. Anyone who hears «candle dipping» and automatically thinks December has missed Stans every year before they even started looking.

Second the slots. You do not book an afternoon but an hour: 13:30–14:30, 14:40–15:40 or 15:45–16:45. Between two slots lie ten and then five minutes — just enough to let one group out and the next in. This is the organisation of a course, not of an open afternoon, and it explains the limited places and the compulsory registration.

Third, and this is the real difference: the children come alone. «For children from age 5 (unaccompanied)», says the announcement. In every other session in our survey that publishes an age rule at all, it runs the other way — in Teufen children under 8 only accompanied, in Glarus under 12, in Zurich-Bachwiesen under 7, in Frauenfeld throughout. Stans is the only session advertised expressly for children without adults. For a five-year-old that is not a detail but an hour entirely her own.

On top of that comes a small but practical peculiarity: CHF 6.00, flat. No weighing, no adding up at the end, no surprise at the till. In the whole survey Stans is the only session charging a participation fee rather than a wax price — everywhere else you pay by weight or per candle and do not know beforehand what it will cost.

🎯 How to plan the visit without arriving at a cold wax pot

A Wednesday afternoon in September, three one-hour slots, compulsory registration — and the children go in on their own.

  1. 1
Registration is compulsory and places are limitedThe organiser writes expressly «limited places, registration compulsory». Unlike most sessions in this survey, you cannot simply drop in. Registration is by email with the Frauen Gemeinschaft Stans.
  2. 2
Book one of three slots — not the afternoon13:30–14:30, 14:40–15:40 or 15:45–16:45. You are there for an hour, not three. Anyone registering two children should think about whether they belong in the same slot.
  3. 3
From age 5 unaccompanied — this is a drop-off, not a family outingThe announcement is aimed at children from five without an accompanying adult. Anyone looking for a shared afternoon with parents is in the wrong place here and better served elsewhere during Advent.
  4. 4
CHF 6.00 flat — and old clothes all the sameThe fee is a fixed amount per child and slot, not a price by weight. Hot wax stays hot wax: wear clothes a splash cannot ruin.

🗺️ Where this session sits in the season

Stans is the first and so far only entry for canton Nidwalden in our candle-dipping dataset. And it shifts the balance of the whole survey: because this session falls on 23 September 2026, our recorded season does not begin in November but here — it spans 23 September 2026 to 3 January 2027. On the day of the session 0 further sessions are running outside the municipality; afterwards 33 more begin anywhere in Switzerland.

Anyone missing the September date will not find the country's next documented wax pot until early November in Winterthur-Veltheim — the earliest multi-day session in the survey. In central Switzerland Sarnen is the next address, just over the Bürgenberg. Nationally 34 of 51 entries are documented, across 18 of 26 cantons.

🏆 The ConvivaPlus verdict

The ConvivaPlus verdict

🥇 Switzerland's earliest🧒 From age 5, unaccompanied🎟️ CHF 6.00 flat, registration compulsory

For families in Nidwalden this is a session with a very clear profile — and you need to know it before setting off: it is one hour for a child on their own, not a shared family afternoon. Anyone looking for that gets something here that exists nowhere else: a five-year-old doing something entirely her own for an hour, at a price known in advance.

Anyone who wants to dip as a whole family is better served during Advent — the next chance in central Switzerland is Sarnen, the next documented one at all in early November in Winterthur. And anyone who wants Stans registers: places are limited, and that is not a phrase but the consequence of the hourly slots.

Freshness note: ⛔ The date, the three slots, the age rule, the fee and the registration requirement come from the Frauen Gemeinschaft Stans (fgstans.ch), checked on 12 September 2026. A regional event calendar lists the same event at «Schulzentrum Turmatt» — we follow the organiser, which writes «Schulhaus Tellenmatt».

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • Six weeks to the next wax pot: after the September date in Stans, nobody in Switzerland dips again until early November. Between the two lies the biggest gap of the season.
  • The only inverted age rule: everywhere else it reads «under X only accompanied». In Stans it reads «from age 5, unaccompanied» — the child comes alone.
  • A price you know in advance: CHF 6.00 flat instead of wax by weight. In this survey Stans is the only session where you know on the way in what it will cost.

Wichtig: Die Kinder gehen allein rein.
