Everyone talks about Advent. In Stans they dip on a Wednesday afternoon in September — two months before a wax pot warms up anywhere else in Switzerland. The earliest candle dipping in the entire survey — and the only one that does not fall in Advent but on a Wednesday afternoon in September. It is also the only one advertised expressly for children WITHOUT an adult: from age 5, on their own, for one booked hour — everywhere else the organiser requires an accompanying adult.

Three things make this afternoon unique in our survey, and all three cut against what you expect from a candle-dipping session.
First the date. Of the 51 candle-dipping sessions we have recorded in Switzerland for 2026, exactly one falls outside Advent — this one. It is at the same time the earliest of all: the country's next wax pot will not warm up until early November, a good six weeks later. Anyone who hears «candle dipping» and automatically thinks December has missed Stans every year before they even started looking.
Second the slots. You do not book an afternoon but an hour: 13:30–14:30, 14:40–15:40 or 15:45–16:45. Between two slots lie ten and then five minutes — just enough to let one group out and the next in. This is the organisation of a course, not of an open afternoon, and it explains the limited places and the compulsory registration.
Third, and this is the real difference: the children come alone. «For children from age 5 (unaccompanied)», says the announcement. In every other session in our survey that publishes an age rule at all, it runs the other way — in Teufen children under 8 only accompanied, in Glarus under 12, in Zurich-Bachwiesen under 7, in Frauenfeld throughout. Stans is the only session advertised expressly for children without adults. For a five-year-old that is not a detail but an hour entirely her own.

Im September Cherze ziehe tönt komisch, isch aber gnau richtig: D Chind händ Zyt, s Schuelhuus isch frei, und im Dezämber hät eh scho jede Tag öppis. Mir mached das jedes Jahr.
Und damit ist Stans in unserer ganzen Erhebung der einzige Anlass ausserhalb der Adventszeit, Claudia — und der früheste überhaupt. Alle anderen 51 Einträge liegen zwischen November und Anfang Januar.
Wichtig: Die Kinder gehen allein rein. Das steht so in der Ausschreibung, ab fünf Jahren ohne Begleitung. Für uns war das der Punkt, an dem unsere Tochter zum ersten Mal etwas ganz für sich gemacht hat.
Sechs Franken, eine Stunde, fertig. Kein Wiegen, kein Rechnen am Schluss. Bei uns in der Familie ist genau das der Grund, warum wir hier waren und nicht anderswo.
Das ist strukturell selten: In der ganzen Erhebung ist Stans der einzige Anlass mit einem Teilnahmebeitrag statt einem Wachspreis. Überall sonst zahlt man nach Gewicht oder pro Kerze — und weiss vorher nicht, was es kostet.
