Candle dipping in Sarnen: two wax pots, a few minutes apart
Sarnen does not have one candle dipping but two — and they have nothing to do with each other. One runs in the old fire-engine house on the village square, carried by the Obwalden leisure centre. The other takes place inside the Reformed church, guided by the confirmation class. For 2026 neither has a date yet.
1. Spritzenhaus Sarnen (village square, 6060 Sarnen), Obwalden leisure centre — the organiser writes verbatim on its events page «The candle dipping and the ‹Fätzigä Samschtig› are being planned».
2. Reformed church Sarnen (Ennetriederweg 2), Evangelical Reformed parish of Obwalden — price by weight, guided by the confirmation class.

Dipping takes place in the old fire-engine house on the village square. On the same page the organiser lists every edition since 2017 without a gap — anyone wanting to know whether an event really happens every year reads it off year by year instead of taking it on trust.
- ⛔ As of 12 September 2026 the organiser writes verbatim on its events page: «No events at present. The candle dipping and the ‹Fätzigä Samschtig› are being planned.» The event is therefore announced for 2026 but not yet dated. The most recently published edition ran from 2 to 14 December 2025; we do NOT carry it forward.
- Published structure without a year: children, young people, adults, clubs, school classes and companies are welcome; individuals and families drop in, groups register in advance (041 662 08 44 or via the contact form on fzo.ch).

Dipping happens inside the church itself, and the guidance comes from the confirmation class — parents may expressly hand their children over into the team's care. In Sarnen a parish and a secular leisure centre each run their own candle dipping, independently of one another — in the same village, a few minutes apart on foot.
- ⛔ As of 12 September 2026 the parish has published no 2026 date; its own candle-dipping page still carries the 2021 edition. The 2021, 2022 and 2025 editions are documented — the 2025 one across three days in early December. We carry none of it forward.
- Published structure without a year: price by weight; the Antenne team serves coffee, tea and cake. Everyone is welcome, young and old.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart
Two candle-dipping sessions in one municipality are rare in this survey — and rarer still in a village this size. What really sets Sarnen apart, though, is that the two come from two entirely different worlds: a secular leisure centre and a parish, independent of each other, a few minutes' walk apart.
The Spritzenhaus on the village square is a former fire station. You dip where the engine used to stand — and have done for decades. On the same page the organiser lists every edition since 2017 without a gap. That is a rarity you only appreciate once you have stood in front of an event that no longer exists: here you can read it off year by year instead of taking it on trust.
In the Reformed church the dipping happens inside the church itself, and the guidance comes from the confirmation class. On top of that comes an offer found almost nowhere else in this survey: parents may expressly hand their children over into the team's care — «You are also welcome to bring your children to the church for the candle dipping and leave them in our care.» Meanwhile the Antenne team serves coffee, tea and cake.
And then the thing that makes this page worth anything in September: neither session has a 2026 date yet, and both will very probably happen. For the leisure centre it even says so in black and white — «being planned». The Reformed parish still shows the 2021 edition on its own candle-dipping page; documented for it are the years 2021, 2022 and 2025. We carry none of it forward. Anyone planning in Obwalden plans here with a probability rather than a date — and at least knows it.

🎯 How to plan the visit without arriving at a cold wax pot
Two independent sessions, both without a 2026 date — and two very different ways to spend an afternoon.
- 1Spritzenhaus: groups register, individuals drop inThe Obwalden leisure centre takes children, young people, adults, clubs, school classes and companies. Individuals and families drop in according to the organiser; groups register in advance (041 662 08 44 or via the contact form on fzo.ch).
- 2Reformed church: children may be handed overIt is expressly published that parents may bring their children to the dipping and leave them in the team's care. The confirmation class guides, the Antenne team serves coffee, tea and cake.
- 3Both dates come late — where to lookThe leisure centre publishes via fzo.ch/veranstaltungen, the parish via its Chiläbrief and refow.ch. Anyone wanting to know early checks both channels from mid-October, not just one.
- 4Price: by weight — the amount is not published for 2026The Reformed parish charges by weight; it has named no amount for 2026, and the leisure centre names none at all. We therefore enter no figure.
🗺️ Where this session sits in the season
Sarnen is the first entry for canton Obwalden in our candle-dipping dataset — and the canton enters the survey with two sessions at once. Both stand as «open»: of the 2 sessions on this page, 2 have no published 2026 date.
In central Switzerland the next address lies in Nidwalden: in Stans they already dip in September — the earliest session in our entire survey, though only for an hour and only for unaccompanied children. Anyone needing a documented Advent date finds one in Winterthur-Veltheim from early November. Nationally 34 of 51 entries are documented, across 18 of 26 cantons; the season spans 23 September 2026 to 3 January 2027.

In Stans (NW), on a Wednesday afternoon in September — the earliest session in our entire survey. It lasts only an hour, though, and is aimed at children from 5 without an adult.
Candle dipping Stans NW →In Sarnen the confirmation class guides in the Reformed church. In Chur teenagers from the town run the session themselves for three weeks, and in Appenzell teenage volunteers help in the convent garden.
Candle dipping Chur →By an unbroken series at the organiser's own site. The Obwalden leisure centre lists every edition since 2017; the Höfe parish in Pfäffikon SZ has even published eight days for 2027. Where such a series is missing, only asking directly remains.
Candle dipping Pfäffikon SZ →The ConvivaPlus verdict
For families in Obwalden, Sarnen offers the best starting position in the canton: two sessions, two sponsors, two very different afternoons. Anyone wanting an outing goes to the Spritzenhaus on the square; anyone needing an hour to themselves takes the children to the Reformed church and has a coffee next door.
Neither is plannable for 2026 yet, though. For the leisure centre it at least says expressly «being planned» — more than most organisers offer in September. Anyone wanting to know early checks both channels from mid-October, not just one: the two announce separately.
Freshness note: ⛔ Documented are both places, both sponsorships and the published structure. NOT documented are dates and prices for 2026. The Obwalden leisure centre wrote on 12 September 2026 «The candle dipping and the ‹Fätzigä Samschtig› are being planned»; the most recently published edition ran from 2 to 14 December 2025. The Reformed parish still shows the 2021 edition on its page; documented are the years 2021, 2022 and 2025. None of it is carried forward.
