Candle dipping St. Gallen: the tent changed host and place
For 35 years the St. Gallen dipping tent was a Cevi affair at the station. Neither is true any more. Anyone looking today for the session they remember from childhood is looking in the wrong place — and finds dates on the organiser's website that come from last year.

After 35 years, Cevi St. Gallen has handed over the candle-dipping marquee: it is now run by the Catholic Dom Zentrum together with the youth ministry and the Reformed city chaplaincy — and it no longer stands by the station, but on Gallusstrasse as part of the Sternenmarkt.
- ⛔ As of 08.09.2026 the page still shows last year's dates. We do NOT carry them forward; the 2026 date is open.
- Dipping is done with beeswax.
- Anyone searching for the «Cevi candle dipping by the station» is searching for an event that no longer exists under that organisation or in that place.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart
Some events are not searched for, they are known: the Cevi, the tent, the station, every year in Advent. Those are exactly the ones that disappear most quietly. No cancellation notice, no announcement — the host changes, the place changes, and memory keeps sending people to the old address.
In St. Gallen both happened. The Cevi handed the tent over after 35 years; it is carried on by the Katholisches Dom Zentrum together with the youth work and the reformed city chaplaincy. And it no longer stands at the station but on Gallusstrasse, embedded in the Sternenmarkt. The event lives — just not under the name and not in the place half the city has in mind.
The second half of the story is more uncomfortable: the organiser's website still carried, as of 8 September 2026, the dates of the last edition. A portal in a hurry copies them and has a date. We do not. A carried-over date from last year is not information, it is a bet with the reader as the stake — and in Thalwil the same season shows how such a bet ends.

🎯 How to plan the visit without arriving at a cold wax pot
Until the date is set, only local knowledge helps. Three things worth knowing about St. Gallen.
- 1Not the station — GallusstrasseThe tent is now part of the Sternenmarkt at Gallusstrasse 16, in the old town. Anyone setting off with the old picture in mind arrives at nothing.
- 2Beeswax, not paraffinDipping is in beeswax. It smells different, colours differently and takes more material per candle — the difference is noticeable at the first dip.
- 3Read the published date again before travellingIn September the site still carried last year's dates. A date is only a date once it names the year 2026.
🗺️ Where this session sits in the season
In the canton of St. Gallen the ConvivaPlus candle-dipping survey records 1 sessions. Nationally there are 38 entries, 25 of them with a documented date — St. Gallen is among the 13 still open for 2026.
For anyone unwilling to wait: the densest day of the season is 29 November 2026, with 17 sessions running at once. The nearest alternatives are in Winterthur and Basel, both with published runs. The densest day is a figure from the ConvivaPlus analysis: it can only be calculated if both the start AND the end are documented for every location — and the fact that St. Gallen appears here as «still open» rather than filled in with last year follows the same method: we carry forward no date the organiser has not published.

In Winterthur several offerings have published runs, including school slots and public days.
Candle dipping Winterthur →Because we present as a date only what is documented. A date carried over from last year looks helpful and is the commonest cause of wasted journeys.
To the ConvivaPlus-Kerzenzieh-Kalender →In Thalwil: the event is biennial and is not taking place in 2026 due to the renovation of the parish house.
Candle dipping Thalwil →The ConvivaPlus verdict
For anyone from St. Gallen with a childhood memory this is the region's most important page — not because of the date, but because it explains why the search for the old event leads nowhere. The event lives; it simply has a different name and a different place.
Anyone who has to plan concretely is poorly served right now: without a published date there is only asking. Anyone needing certainty will find published runs in Winterthur.
Freshness note: ⛔ No date is published for 2026. As of 8 September 2026 the organiser's website still carried the previous edition's dates; we do NOT carry them forward. Ask the Dom Zentrum before travelling.

- ◆An event can move without anyone noticing: 35 years of Cevi at the station is a civic landmark — the handover to the Dom Zentrum and the move to Gallusstrasse were never announced as loudly as they were anchored.
- ◆Old dates are the most dangerous information: they are still there, they look like an appointment, and they are not one. A date is only a date if it carries 2026.
- ◆Beeswax is a decision, not a detail: it smells, it weighs, it costs. Anyone who has smelled the difference from paraffin looks for it next time.
