This page answers a question with a no — deliberately. «When is Sunday shopping in St. Gallen?» has no answer in the form of a date in this canton, because the act cut the matter differently from Bern or Basel-Stadt. There the canton designates days for everyone; here the political municipality permits per shop. Two businesses on the same street can have four entirely different days, and both are correct.

Ich han mal versuecht useztfinde, wänn de Sunntigsverchauf isch. Gits nöd. Jede Lade cha vier Tag im Johr sälber wähle — das hät mir sogar d Stadtverwaltig so gseit.
Art. 12 Abs. 1 lit. b RLG zählt «höchstens vier je Laden und Jahr». Darum steht bei uns für St. Gallen kein Datum, sondern die Regel — ein Stadtdatum zu rendern hiesse, eine Tatsache zu erfinden, und die kostet dich am Ende eine Autofahrt.
Was hilft: die 12-bis-17-Uhr-Regel für den Advent. Die steht im Gesetz und viele Läden halten sich daran, auch wenn sie es nicht müssten. Vorher hinzufahren lohnt selten.
Ehrlich gesagt fand ich die Auskunft «es gibt kein gemeinsames Datum» erst unbefriedigend. Aber sie stimmt — und ist besser als ein erfundenes Datum, vor dem man dann steht.
