Cancel internet in Switzerland 2026: when a letter fails
Registered mail is seen as the safe option. For internet subscriptions that is not always true: we read the terms and conditions of 7 providers. With 2 of them a letter gets you nowhere, and with 3 the help page says something different from the contract. Here you find the channel that counts with your provider, the earliest end of your contract and the matching template.
Does a letter count? With 2 of 7 providers it doesn't
According to the ConvivaPlus analysis of the contract documents, with Sunrise and Galaxus Internet the terms expressly rule out a letter. Sunrise only accepts cancellations of internet, landline and TV by phone (0800 100 600) or chat; Galaxus Internet only in the customer account. A registered letter to either of them is not valid under the contract, and the notice period keeps running as if you had sent nothing.
With the other 5 a letter counts: Swisscom, Wingo, M-Budget Internet, Salt and Green. Wingo and M-Budget run on the terms of Swisscom (Schweiz) AG. Pick your provider in the ConvivaPlus Internet Cancellation Check: it shows the channel the contract requires, with wording, version and check date, and calculates the earliest end of your contract.

Cancel Sunrise: phone or chat only, and a ruling is pending
Since 2019, Sunrise has only accepted cancellations by phone or chat. In April 2026 the Zurich District Court declared this clause unlawful, in a case brought by the Swiss consumer protection foundation (Stiftung für Konsumentenschutz). The ruling is not final: Sunrise is appealing to the Zurich High Court (Obergericht).
For you, today, this means the contract still applies. According to Swiss broadcaster SRF, Sunrise will not change its practice until there is a final and enforceable ruling. If you cancel now, call or use the chat, and keep a record of the conversation with the call log further down.
The same ruling covers a second clause: in its terms (July 2023 version, clause 2) Sunrise excludes the right to cancel when prices rise with inflation. The court declared this clause unlawful too, again not yet final.
Contract wording (German version, no official English text)
«Kündigungen von Internet-, Festnetz-, TV und Home Security Abos müssen entweder telefonisch (0800 100 600, kostenlos innerhalb der Schweiz) oder per Sunrise Chat erfolgen. … Kündigungen per Brief oder E-Mail sind nicht gültig.»Sunrise: Besondere Bestimmungen für Festnetz-, Internet- und TV-Dienstleistungen, Ziff. 16.2 und 16.4 (gleichlautend AGB Juli 2023 Ziff. 16), version September 2025
Keep your number: when a letter does count at Sunrise
The exception is in the contract: clause 16.4 of the special terms (version September 2025) still accepts a written cancellation if you take your number to a new provider and the new provider submits the cancellation electronically on your behalf as part of the number transfer.
So in this case you do not cancel yourself: you ask your new provider to port the number, and they pass on the cancellation. A registered letter you send yourself is still not valid, even when switching. If you are not keeping a number, only phone and chat count.
Exception in the contract (German version)
«Bei Kündigungen mit Rufnummer-Portierung wird eine schriftliche Kündigung weiterhin akzeptiert, sofern diese im Rahmen des Portierungsprozesses durch den neuen Anbieter im Auftrag des Kunden elektronisch eingereicht wird.»Sunrise: Besondere Bestimmungen für Festnetz-, Internet- und TV-Dienstleistungen, clause 16.4, version September 2025
Help page or T&Cs? With 3 of 7 providers they differ
At Swisscom and Sunrise the notice periods are as if swapped: the Swisscom help page says 60 days, as in the Sunrise contract; the Sunrise help page says 2 months, as in the Swisscom contract. With Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt the help page differs from the contract, and the contract prevails.
The Swiss Code of Obligations (OR) does not treat the internet contract as a contract type of its own and prescribes no form for cancelling it; channel and notice period are therefore set by the contract. Salt differs on the channel: the help page names only the phone, the terms say "in writing or by phone" (schriftlich oder telefonisch). The table puts all three differences side by side, each with both wordings, version and check date.
To be safe, follow both: with Salt, write and also call; for the notice period, take the longer of the two.

Internet notice period: 2 months is not 60 days
For a contract ending on 31 March 2027, 31 January 2027 is still in time at Swisscom. At Sunrise and Salt it is already one day too late: the plan then runs until 30 April 2027, a whole month longer. One day at arrival can cost a month of base fees.
If your cancellation arrives on 31 December 2026, the Swisscom plan ends on 28 February 2027. Sunrise and Salt run until 31 March 2027, one month longer. "2 months to the end of a month" means the end of the second month after arrival. "60 days to the end of a month" means the first month-end at least 60 days after arrival. From 31 December, 60 days take you to 1 March, so to the end of March.
What counts is the day the cancellation reaches the provider, not the postmark. To leave Swisscom on 31 March 2027, your cancellation must arrive by 31 January 2027. With Green it is 2 months to the end of the billing period; how long that is, is on your bill. With Galaxus Internet, the notice period shown on abos.galaxus.ch when you signed up applies.

|---|---|---|
| Swisscom | 2 months to month-end | 28 February 2027 |

| Salt (Home/Fiber) | 60 days to month-end | 31 March 2027 |

| Green | 2 months to end of billing period | see bill / contract |
Minimum contract term: what cancelling early costs
Cancel Sunrise in month eleven of 12 and you do not pay the remaining base fees month by month but all at once: the special terms (clause 16.2) require the base fees for each service cancelled early up to the end of the minimum term, due immediately.
Swisscom, Wingo and M-Budget set no fixed minimum term in their terms at all, one "may" be agreed: whether you have one is in your individual contract, and you can cancel without costs at the earliest to its end. Salt charges "the fees provided for in the contract", with no formula in the terms. And at Green the plan does not end by itself after the minimum term: it renews tacitly by two months at a time.
If your minimum term is still running, enter its end in the check above: it then calculates the first end possible without costs.
A registered letter is only worth as much as the contract that accepts it.
Cancelling when you move, emigrate or in case of death
Only two of seven contracts name a move as a reason to cancel without notice, and only if the service no longer works at your new home: Sunrise and Galaxus Internet. With Green the terms expressly say the opposite: the minimum term keeps running, even if you move abroad.

Moving within Switzerland, moving in together, flat share
If the service works at the new address, the normal notice period applies. For moving the connection, Sunrise (special terms, clause 11) and Galaxus Internet (terms, service fees) name a fee. If you move in together or into a flat share, one connection is too many: cancel the one whose notice period runs out first. The check calculates both contracts side by side. For the flat, Ending a tenancy calculates the date; for the parking space, Cancel a parking space.
Moving abroad
Swisscom has its own online form and asks for your municipality's deregistration certificate. That does not always make it free. In short: costs may apply during the minimum term, and the cancellation only takes effect once the certificate arrives. So ask for it when you deregister at the counter. With Green the minimum term continues under its subscription terms.
Death
This is where providers are most accommodating. Swisscom writes (in German): "Im Todesfall nehmen wir Kündigungen und Übernahmen per sofort vor, ohne Kündigungsfrist oder Zusatzkosten." That is: immediate cancellation, with no notice period and no extra costs. The death certificate must be available when you report the death. With Sunrise and Galaxus Internet the terms expressly name death as a reason for cancelling without notice. The Swisscom procedure step by step: Swisscom in case of death.
Cancellation template: letter for 5 providers, log for the phone
Swisscom, Wingo and M-Budget Internet: three brands, but one and the same company in the contract, Swisscom (Schweiz) AG. The letter is addressed to that company, not to the brand. That is why every template here carries the name from the contract, not the one from the advertising.
There is a letter only where it counts: for Swisscom, Wingo, M-Budget Internet, Salt and Green, each with the contracting company, the notice period and the clause of the terms, as Word and PDF in four languages. For Sunrise and Galaxus Internet deliberately none.
Send the letter by registered mail, give your customer number and the connection address, and take the cancellation address from your last bill: addresses change, which is why we have not filled one in. Ask in the letter for written confirmation stating the date the contract ends. If you cancel for parents or a partner, enclose a power of attorney. For flat, job and insurance, the templates are under Cancellation letters in Switzerland.

Call log for phone and chat
What is said on the phone is hard to prove later. The log records what matters: date and time, the name of the customer service agent, the reference number and the end date they confirm. In a chat, also save the transcript as a screenshot or PDF. The sheet fits on one page next to the phone. If the confirmation does not arrive, set a deadline with a complaint letter.
ConvivaPlus call log: cancelling by phone or chat

For any cancellation by phone or chat (with Sunrise, the channel the contract requires): fill it in next to the phone and keep it until the written confirmation arrives.

Cancellation services: when you can save the fee
Online services send your cancellation by registered mail for a fee. With Sunrise and Galaxus Internet that is exactly the channel the contract excludes: a paid registered letter does not end the contract. With the other 5 you do the same yourself with the template above, for the price of a registered letter.
Init7, yallo, iWay and cable networks: the contract text is missing
Three well-known names, and for none of them was a contract text publicly available on 3 November 2026: Init7, yallo and iWay. If you are their customer, ask the hotline which channel counts before you cancel, and get it confirmed in writing. A provider only gets a row in the table once we have read its contract; as soon as a contract becomes available, it gets its row.
Regional cable networks each have their own terms, including Quickline's partner networks. If you are on a cable network, the channel is in your network's terms; if in doubt, ask the hotline. Digital Republic does not offer home internet.
No row: contract text not available
- 📡 Init7: contract text not publicly available on 3 Nov 2026, ask the customer hotline.
- 📡 yallo: contract text not publicly available on 3 Nov 2026, ask the customer hotline.
- 📡 iWay: contract text not publicly available on 3 Nov 2026, ask the customer hotline.
Deliberately not in the table
- Regional cable networks (incl. Quickline partner networks) (each network has its own terms)
- Digital Republic (no home internet, mobile only)
More on cancelling
Other contracts, other notice periods
The ConvivaPlus Cancellation Table reads the cancellation channel from the contract documents of 7 providers, not their help pages, with version and check date for every row. The result: with 2 providers a letter gets you nowhere, with 3 the help page differs from the contract, and depending on the provider a move either lets you cancel without notice or it doesn't.
