Candle dipping in Chur: the session where the experts are the teenagers
In Chur it is not adults at the wax pots with young people alongside, but the other way round. For three weeks teenagers from the town explain to visitors how to dip properly — which makes the session also the thing it produces: a youth-work project open to the public.

- Opening hours
- Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The exact daily hours are published by the organiser via poster and agenda; they were not yet fixed as of 11 September 2026.

- Jugendhaus Chur, Gäuggelistrasse 10, 7001 Chur
- Organiser
- Kinder- und Jugendarbeit Chur
The guidance here does not come from adults but from young people of Chur: for three weeks they stand at the wax pots as experts and answer questions. The candle dipping is therefore also what it produces — a youth-work project open to the public.
- For school and kindergarten classes there are slots outside the public hours. Registration runs through an online form and opens, according to the organiser, on 1 October 2026 at 15:00.
- For clubs, companies or private groups the organiser expressly offers NO exclusive slots — they are welcome during regular opening hours.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart
Most candle-dipping sessions in this survey are an offering FOR young people. Chur is an offering BY young people: for three weeks teenagers from the town stand at the wax pots as the experts and answer questions. This is not a youth-development label stuck onto an adults' event — it is the operating model. If you have a question about wick length, you ask a fourteen-year-old who has done it a hundred times.
The second point is the one that costs a car journey: 21 days in the calendar are not 21 open days here. It is open only on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays — that is 12 of 21 days. An aggregator prints «23 November to 13 December» and is done. Anyone driving up to Chur on a Thursday with children finds the youth centre closed.
And then there is the registration window with an exact time, which we found nowhere else in the survey: school and kindergarten classes get slots outside the public hours, and registration opens, according to the organiser, on 1 October 2026 at 15:00 via an online form. No other recorded session publishes the opening of registration to the hour. For a teacher that is the real date on this page — seven weeks before the event.
Just as notable is what the organiser rules out in the same breath: for clubs, companies or private groups there are expressly no exclusive slots. They are welcome during regular opening hours — and not otherwise. It is the most clearly drawn line in this survey: the school gets a slot, the company gets a place in the queue.

🎯 How to plan the visit without arriving at a cold wax pot
Four weekdays, a registration to the hour and a clear no to companies. Planning Chur properly.
- 1Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday — otherwise noThe run covers 21 calendar days; it is open on 12 of them. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are closed. That is the information a plain date range systematically swallows.
- 2The daily hours come later — via poster and agendaThe organiser publishes the exact hours at short notice via poster and agenda; as of 11 September 2026 they were not fixed. So we carry the weekdays, not a time.
- 3School classes: 1 October 2026, 15:00The online registration form for school and kindergarten classes opens on that day at that time, according to the organiser. Anyone after the slots outside public hours should be ready then.
- 4Clubs and companies get no slot of their ownThe organiser expressly rules out exclusive slots for clubs, companies and private groups. If you come as a group, you come during regular opening hours — with everyone else.
🗺️ Where this session sits in the season
Chur is the first entry for the canton of Grisons in our candle-dipping dataset — the canton entered the survey with this page, and the first documented day in the canton is therefore 23 November 2026.
On opening day 15 other sessions are running outside the municipality; after that only 10 start anywhere in Switzerland. The densest day of the season is 29 November 2026 with 21 wax pots open at once. Nationwide, 31 of 44 entries are documented, spread over 12 of 26 cantons — Graubünden is Switzerland's largest canton and appears in this survey with a single entry. That is not a finding about the canton, but about how far our search has reached so far.

Because many sessions only operate on certain weekdays. In Chur the run covers 21 calendar days and the opening covers 12. Anyone reading only the start and end dates plans into thin air on three days out of seven.
Every verified candle-dipping session →In Chur the young people run the operation themselves. In Basel the Landhof children's and youth work service holds its own session, and in St. Gallen the Catholic centre works together with youth work.
Candle dipping in St. Gallen →In Pfäffikon SZ the setup is available to schools and clubs by arrangement outside opening hours too. In Chur that applies only to school classes, expressly not to clubs and companies.
Candle dipping in Pfäffikon SZ →The ConvivaPlus verdict
For families in Chur and the Grisons Rhine valley the youth centre has the most distinctive character in the whole survey: you are guided by young people there, not supervised by adults. For older children that is a different afternoon from a wax pot in a parish house.
Two things to know beforehand: it is open on only four weekdays, and the exact hours come late, via poster and agenda. For teachers the date that counts is 1 October at 15:00, not 23 November.
Freshness note: ⛔ Run and weekdays are documented. The exact daily hours for 2026 were not published as of 11 September 2026; the organiser announces them via poster and agenda. So we carry no time and carry none forward from last year.
