Sunday shopping in Thun: one of the four dates is not a Sunday at all

Search for «Sunday trading» in Thun and you find three dates out of four. The fourth slips through every filter because it is a Monday — and that is no oversight, it is written that way in the Bernese act.

Key takeaway
For Thun, 4 dates apply in 2026: 6 April 2026, 29 November 2026, 13 December 2026 and 20 December 2026, each from 10:00 to 18:00. ⛔ The first is Easter Monday — a trading day that is not a Sunday. Art. 11 para. 2 makes it possible: it speaks of «public holidays» and therefore does not mean Sundays alone. ⛔ The same provision sets the second ceiling: a retail shop may use only 2 of the 4 days. Designation comes from the canton of Bern, not from the town of Thun.

🛍️ Shopping on Sunday — what differs here

Thun's special case is a vocabulary problem with practical consequences. The whole terrain is called «Sunday trading», every search is phrased that way, every list is built that way — and precisely Thun's first date of the year, 6 April 2026, slips through that filter because it is a Monday. Filter by Sunday and you filter it out.

In law it is nevertheless correct, word for word: Art. 11 para. 2 of the Bernese Trade and Industry Act allows retail shops to open on «two public holidays» — not on two Sundays. Easter Monday is a public holiday in the canton of Bern; it therefore counts against the same quota as an Advent Sunday. ⛔ For us it had a consequence of its own: a guard checking «every date must be a Sunday» would have fired on this entry with good reason and still been wrong. We therefore record the reason in the dataset, not only in the text.

The second figure applies in Thun exactly as in Bern: of the 4 dates, your shop may use only 2. Two shops on the same street can pick different days — and in a town this size you notice immediately. Which day applies to which shop no list can answer; what is possible is shown by the Sunday Radar by Conviva Plus, legal basis included.

🎯 Practical tips for this trading Sunday

Four things that decide the shopping day in Thun.

  1. 1
Search for public holidays, not only Sundays6 April 2026 is a trading day and a Monday. It is missing from any list filtered by Sunday — including most official regional calendars.
  2. 2
Two out of four, here tooArt. 11 para. 2 limits every retail shop to 2 of the 4 cantonal days. If you have a particular shop in mind, ask there — the list only says which days are possible at all.
  3. 3
10:00 to 18:00 is in the actIn the canton of Bern the hours are not the shop's business. Turn up at nine and you wait — arrive after 6 p.m. and you are too late.
  4. 4
The dates come from the canton, not the townUnlike the canton of Zurich, it is not the municipality that notifies here. The cantonal Economics Office's general ruling applies to Thun exactly as to the city of Bern — which is why it often does not appear on the town's own site.

Each bar is a documented trading day. Dark = this city, light = the nearest ones. Sunday trading clusters in Advent — but not all of it does, and two cities on the same date need not share the same hours.

🏆 The ConvivaPlus verdict

The ConvivaPlus verdict

One Monday among four4 designated, 2 usable10:00–18:00 in the act

Thun is where the phrase «Sunday trading» becomes a problem. The term shapes the search, the lists and the expectation — and drops exactly the date that falls in spring. Anyone planning in Thun should think in trading days, not Sundays.

Otherwise everything that holds for the city of Bern holds here: fixed hours in the act, cantonally designated dates — and the second ceiling that turns four possible days into two actual ones. The list says what is permitted. What is open, the shop says.

Freshness note: The dates come from the cantonal general ruling of 08.09.2025 and apply to the whole canton of Bern. Which two days an individual Thun shop uses is recorded nowhere centrally — no overview can supply it.

💎 Golden nuggets
The non-obvious — researched, not copied
  • A trading day that is not a Sunday. Thun lists Easter Monday for 2026. It is possible because Art. 11 para. 2 speaks of «public holidays» — Sundays are merely the commonest case. Any list filtered by weekday loses this date.
  • Thun's dates do not come from Thun. In the canton of Bern the canton designates for the whole territory; the Economics Office's ruling applies to Thun exactly as to the city of Bern. Searching the town's own site means searching in the wrong place.

Was viele nicht wissen: Die vier Berner Termine gelten auch bei uns, aber jedes Geschäft darf nur an zweien öffnen. In Thun heisst das im Dezember konkret: nicht jeder Laden am selben Tag.

Genau, Art. 11 Abs. 2 HGG.
