Winter swimming in Zurich: where lifeguards keep watch, and where the Limmat becomes a start line once a year
✓ Checked at the source · as of 7 October 2026 · 2 dates still to come
Zurich has three ways into cold water, and they share nothing but the temperature: a club that opens a lake bath every weekend, a lakeside sauna closed for lack of water, and a Sunday in December when up to four hundred people swim across the Limmat.

- Introductory winter-swimming courses every Saturday and Sunday at 11.30 am and 12.30 pm, with registration.
- As of 7 October 2026 the website says the Seebad Enge remains closed until further notice by order of the authorities because of low water levels. No 2026/27 season start is shown.

✨ What makes it special here
The Frauenbad at Stadthausquai is closed in winter. Except for one Sunday: then a course of 111 or 125 metres runs from Pier 7 on Limmatquai across the Limmat to it, and 400 people get into the water in groups of twenty. In 2025 there were 365 of them, in 8.4-degree water and constant rain. The official tickets were gone on the evening sales opened; after that only auctions and stand-by tickets at the start remained.
If you don't want to wait for that Sunday, go to the Utoquai. A club opens the lake bath for three hours every winter weekend, with lifeguards at the water; the city sports office entrusts it with the bath, and the membership fee pays for supervision. At weekends there are introductory sessions at 11.30 am and 12.30 pm.
Then there is the gap: the Seebad Enge, with its lakeside sauna, says on its website that it remains closed by order of the authorities because of low water. For sauna and lake around Zurich you currently have to head out along the shore: Küsnacht, Stäfa, Richterswil or Uster.

🎯 Ice bathing tips
Four things that decide a winter day in the water in Zurich.

- 2Put your swimsuit on at homeThere is only a small tent at the start; the Pier 7 restaurant is not a changing room. Your clothes are taken across in your own bag.

🗺️ Nearby — more winter baths
The ConvivaPlus winter swimming survey lists 13 spots, 10 of them winter baths. On 6 December 2026 Zurich is not alone: the same Sunday, 500 places (already fully booked for 2026) wait at the Blausee — 900 places in a single day.
Two weeks later comes the Coupe de Noël in Geneva, with 4,500 places. Everything is in the winter swimming overview.

The ConvivaPlus verdict
For a first time, the Utoquai is a particularly well-supervised place: supervision, sessions, a volunteer community. Its weakness is the window: three hours, two days a week. On weekdays you have to head out to the lake.
The Samichlausschwimmen is the experience, not the training. If you want to swim, put 30 November at 5 pm in your diary, not 6 December.
Freshness note: We read the Seebad Enge's status on 7 October 2026. Check the bath's website before you go.

- ◆A bath that opens once a winter: the Frauenbad at Stadthausquai, finish of the Samichlausschwimmen, open that day with the support of the city sports office.
- ◆The fee pays for safety: at the Utoquai the CHF 150 membership funds the lifeguards.
How we check
Every date comes from the organiser's, the municipality's or the canton's own site — never from an aggregator, never copied over from last year. Next to each source is the date we last read it.
Where only a fixed rule is published, such as the eve of St Nicholas' Day, we work out the date and label it “calculated from the fixed rule”. Anything not yet published stays open — we don't guess.
Something missing or changed? A note below is enough; we check it at the source.
