Affoltern turnip lantern parade: three parades at the same minute – you have to choose
In Zurich several neighbourhoods parade with several processions. Most stagger the starts so the chains of light meet along the way. Affoltern does not: here all three set off at 18:00 sharp. Pick one and you will not see the other two that evening.

Each bar is a documented evening. Dark = this parade, light = the nearest ones. A parade lasts an hour and often falls on the same evening as another — read only a date and you miss that the next village sets off at the same minute.

🔎 What sets this parade apart from every other one
Three starting points are nothing unusual in Zurich — the neighbourhoods climb the hillsides, and a single meeting point would be a detour for half the residents. What is unusual is when Affoltern sets off: all three parades at the same minute.
That is a decision, not an oversight, and it only shows up in comparison. In Friesenberg four groups start ten minutes apart so that they meet on the destination square and can watch each other arrive. Affoltern optimises the other end: short walks from home, three fully-fledged parades, none of them «the» main one.
For the evening that means two things. First: you pick one and you get all of it — with its own music group, not as an appendix to a bigger procession. Second: there is no second attempt. Standing at Wolfswinkel at 18:05 does not let you switch to Glaubten church — that parade has been walking just as long.

🎯 How not to end up in the dark at the wrong meeting point
In Affoltern you decide before setting off, not along the way.
- 1Choose the start by where you liveWolfswinkel 9, the Bächlerstrasse/Hungerbergstrasse junction or Glaubten church. There is no ranking among the three — you go to the nearest.
- 218:00 means 18:00 at all threeNo staggered start, no window for latecomers. Five minutes late means walking behind your own parade — the other two left at the same moment.
- 3Coming with friends from another parade: agree to meet at the finishThe three parades do not cross paths along the way. You are together at the Fronwald sports ground — there and not before.
- 4At the finish there is punch and a bread rollBoth from the neighbourhood association at the Fronwald sports ground. Nothing is published about costs or vouchers.
🗺️ Where this parade sits in the season
In Zurich, turnip lanterns are a neighbourhood matter — there is no city-wide parade, only as many as there are neighbourhood associations to carry them. In the canton of Zurich, the ConvivaPlus survey lists 12 parades; nationwide 22 entries with 16 documented dates.
7 November 2026 is one of the densest evenings of the season: besides Affoltern, 3 further recorded parades set off. The densest evening of all is 6 November 2026 with 5 simultaneous parades — a figure from the ConvivaPlus analysisthat exists only because every date was read at the organiser's own source.

It depends on what the evening is meant to deliver. Staggering gives you the image — four chains of light meeting on one square. Simultaneous starts give short walks and three fully-fledged parades. The survey lists 12 parades in the canton of Zurich, three of them with at least three starting points.
All parades in the canton of Zurich →No. Zurich has no city-wide parade — each neighbourhood walks for itself, carried by its own neighbourhood association. Searching for «turnip lanterns Zurich» really means searching for your own neighbourhood.
All verified turnip lantern parades →Music holds together a procession of several hundred children: it sets the pace and marks the beginning and the end. That is why the larger parades in this survey almost always have a music group or a drummer. In Affoltern each of the three has one.
The ConvivaPlus verdict
Affoltern is a parade for your own street, not for the grand image. Three processions, each with its own music, each equally important — if you live in the neighbourhood you have the shortest walk to the start and a whole parade to yourself. That everyone converges at the Fronwald in the end still makes it a shared evening.
The one reservation follows from the same decision: you do not see the other two processions. If you want the image of converging chains of light, you are better served ten kilometres further south in Friesenberg — on the same evening.
Freshness note: Starting points, time, destination and refreshments come from the Quartierverein Zürich-Affoltern (as of 10 September 2026). Nothing is published about weather, costs or where to get turnips.

- ◆Staggered or simultaneous is where the real choice lies. Three Zurich parades in this survey start from three or more points — Höngg with five processions, Friesenberg with four, Affoltern with three. The first two offset their starts so the processions meet at the finish. Affoltern does not. Both are defensible, but they are two different evenings, and you only feel the difference once you have seen both.
- ◆Three processions mean three music groups. That is the quiet reason many places stick to a single parade: music does not divide into three. Wanting three equal processions means finding three sets of musicians — every year again.

Affoltern is the only entry in the survey where three or more groups set off at the same minute — Friesenberg and Höngg stagger their starts.

Mir sind sit vier Jahr immer ab de Chile Glaubte. Mini Schwöschter goht ab Wolfswinkel — mir gsehnd üs erst am Fronwald wider. Das isch normal hie, me mues sich vorher abmache wo me sich trifft.
