Three starting points are nothing unusual in Zurich — the neighbourhoods climb the hillsides, and a single meeting point would be a detour for half the residents. What is unusual is when Affoltern sets off: all three parades at the same minute.
That is a decision, not an oversight, and it only shows up in comparison. In Friesenberg four groups start ten minutes apart so that they meet on the destination square and can watch each other arrive. Affoltern optimises the other end: short walks from home, three fully-fledged parades, none of them «the» main one.
For the evening that means two things. First: you pick one and you get all of it — with its own music group, not as an appendix to a bigger procession. Second: there is no second attempt. Standing at Wolfswinkel at 18:05 does not let you switch to Glaubten church — that parade has been walking just as long.
