Chomer Liechtliweg 2026/27: real candles on Lake Zug — lit by 132 elves, four a night
✓ Checked at the source · as of 12 October 2026
In Cham the Liechtliweg does not shine with LEDs but with candles. Every evening four volunteer “elves” light the lanterns, the organisers speak of 132 in all, and then the string of lights runs along the lake from the Hirsgarten to the lido and through Villette Park. It shines for as long as the candles burn.

✨ What to expect
The heart of it is the candles: volunteers light them every day, families, singles, long-time residents and newcomers. Each evening needs four elves; the organisers speak of 132. For this teamwork the municipality honoured the Liechtliweg with its “CHAMpion” award, and the artist-designed Cham bear sits at the cash stand this Advent.
It opens on Saturday 28 November 2026 at 6 pm with mayor Georges Helfenstein and the Schlossgruess yodel club. On the Saturdays after that, brass players, alphorns and a horn quartet from the music school play, and on 5 December the Samichlaus comes to the Villette. At the close on New Year's Day there is free mulled wine while it lasts.

The ConvivaPlus verdict
Cham is the light trail with the most village in it: candles instead of power, volunteers instead of technology, yodellers and brass on Saturdays. To see it while all the lanterns burn, come early.
Freshness note: Programme and times read at the source on 12 October 2026. The source's homepage says “1 January 2026”; the programme on the same site says 1 January 2027, the only date that matches the weekday.
