Candle dipping in Aarau: fifty years, one association, one purpose
At some events the good cause is a line of small print. At the Aarau Markthalle it is the reason the event exists at all: insieme Aarau-Lenzburg funds its holiday and leisure programme for people with a cognitive disability from the candle dipping. In 2026 for the fiftieth time.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart
Fifty editions means: anyone taking their grandchildren to the Markthalle today may have been there as a child themselves. All of it carried for half a century by a single association, insieme Aarau-Lenzburg. And the proceeds are not a donation to a third party but the funding of its own service: holidays and leisure for people with a cognitive disability. Dip a thick candle here and you know what the difference pays for.
The second point is one line in the opening hours that decides the whole afternoon: Monday to Thursday it closes at 18:00, on Friday at 21:00. Three hours' difference on exactly one weekday. For working people Friday is therefore the only evening on which candle dipping in Aarau fits after work.
And then a piece of honesty we will not spare ourselves: at the time of checking, the opening line on the organiser's site still carried a date from last year. That does NOT mean the run is wrong — the published 2026 run and the recurring weekday hours are unaffected. It means exactly one thing: for the opening Friday a phone call is worth it. We name the field affected rather than dismissing everything or believing everything.
Aarau opens right into the busiest stretch of the season: on the first dipping day 19 other sessions are already running in the rest of Switzerland, and after it only 5 start anywhere in the country. If you are late in Aargau, this is one of the last addresses — and, at 17 days, one of the longest.

🎯 How to plan the visit without arriving at a cold wax pot
One Friday evening, a published wax price and an opening day with a question mark. How to plan Aarau.
- 1Friday is the long dayMonday to Thursday the Markthalle closes at 18:00, on Friday only at 21:00. Saturday and Sunday it opens as early as 10:00. If you want to come after work, you have exactly one weekday.
- 2The price is published — and tieredCHF 4.00 per 100 grams of beeswax for school classes, CHF 4.50 for everyone else. That is not an entrance fee but the wax price: a thick candle costs more because there is more wax on it.
- 3Ask ahead about opening dayAt the check on 8 September 2026 the opening line on the site still carried a date from last year. The run and the weekday hours are unaffected — for the first Friday a phone call is still worth it.
- 4Driving is the worse ideaThe organiser recommends coming on foot, by PubliBike or by public transport. By car there are the Kasino, City-Märt and Kaserne car parks; the Markthalle sits on Färbergässli, in the middle of the old town.

In Aarau insieme Aarau-Lenzburg funds its holiday and leisure programme. In Zurich the seed capital of Zürcher Eingliederung historically came from the candle dipping on the former Bürkliplatz.
Zurich candle dipping at Hechtplatz →In Baden on Bahnhofplatz and in Lenzburg. That gives Aargau three entries — in our survey only the cantons of Zurich and Basel-Stadt have more.
Candle dipping in Baden →You pay for the wax, not for entry: the finished candle is weighed. A thin candle costs a few francs, a thick one a multiple — which makes the visit budgetable, but not in advance.

For families in canton Aargau the Markthalle is the most dependable address of the season: 17 days, published hours for every weekday, a published wax price and a purpose you can read up on. That is more predictability than most sessions in this survey offer.
One point stays open, and it is small: at the time of checking the site's opening line still carried a date from last year. If you are aiming for the first Friday in particular, ask ahead; for every other day the schedule is documented.
Freshness note: ⛔ Run, weekday opening hours and wax price come from the organiser (insieme-aarau-lenzburg.ch/aarauer-kerzenziehen), checked 8 September 2026. The opening line on the same page still carried a date from last year at that point; for the opening Friday a check is advisable.

- ◆Three hours on a single weekday: Monday to Thursday it closes at 18:00, on Friday only at 21:00. For working people that one line decides the entire visit.
- ◆The proceeds stay in the house: insieme Aarau-Lenzburg funds its own holiday and leisure programme with them — not a donation to third parties, but the basis of the programme.
- ◆An outdated detail does not invalidate the whole page: the opening line still carried last year, the run and the weekday hours did not. We say which field is affected instead of distrusting the lot.
