Sunday shopping in Basel: turn up at eleven and you have lost half the day
Two dates, and in both cases it is not the day that decides your outing but the hour. Basel-Stadt is one of the few cantons that writes its opening time into the act — and the morning is not part of it.

📅 Dates 2026 and evidence status
The dates below stand as the responsible authority published them for 2026 — nothing is carried over from last year. Where nothing is published, that is stated too.

🛍️ Shopping on Sunday — what differs here
The commonest misstep on this subject is not a wrong date but a wrong hour — and Basel is where it costs most. People coming from the surrounding region, from Baden-Württemberg or Alsace often plan the Advent Sunday like a Saturday: early start, car park before the rush, city centre by ten. At ten, Basel is shut. Trading begins at 13:00.
That is neither coincidence nor shop custom but the law in force: § 4a sets the hours, and the Office for Economy and Labour prints them beside the dates in its annual publication. In several cantons — Zurich for one — no such provision exists; there each business decides. Basel decides for all of them at once.
The second figure is the more interesting one: 2 dates, not four. Art. 19 para. 6 of the Labour Act would allow the canton up to four permit-free Sundays; § 4a names two. Basel-Stadt therefore uses only half of what the federal government permits — a decision, not a gap. Which cantons do the same and which do not is shown by the Sunday Radar by Conviva Plus, comparing all 12 cantonal acts we have read.

🎯 Practical tips for this trading Sunday
Three things that decide the afternoon in Basel.
- 1Do not arrive before 13:00Shops open at 13:00 and close at 18:00. Five hours is tight — arrive at four and you have two.
- 2Two dates, not fourBasel-Stadt designates 2 dates. Miss one and only one remains — in cantons with four dates the margin is twice as large.
- 3The rule applies cantonally, not per municipalityDesignation covers the whole canton of Basel-Stadt, Riehen and Bettingen included. Unlike the canton of Zurich, where each municipality notifies its own days, there is only one answer here.
- 4Basel-Landschaft counts differentlyIn the neighbouring canton the Advent dates appear as a RULE in the act — «the 2nd and 4th Sundays of Advent» — and municipalities may expressly pick one or two others. Crossing the cantonal border changes not just the date but the whole mechanism.
📊 Seasonal comparison with neighbouring cities
Where this city sits in the season — and which neighbouring city opens on the same Sunday.
Each bar is a documented trading day. Dark = this city, light = the nearest ones. Sunday trading clusters in Advent — but not all of it does, and two cities on the same date need not share the same hours.
🗺️ Nearby — other cities
Nationwide the ConvivaPlus Sunday trading survey holds 217 entries from 70 municipalities, 212 with a confirmed date. The documented season runs from 25 January 2026 to 27 December 2026 — Basel, with its two dates, sits right at the end of that span, in Advent.
The densest trading Sunday in the survey is 20 December 2026, with 52 cities open at once. On Basel's dates, 53 other recorded municipalities open — which above all means: Basel's dates fall where everyone else's fall. The difference is not the date, it is the hour. All 12 cantonal rules side by side are on the Swiss overview; the Basel dates on the canton of Basel-Stadt page.

Sihlpost Zurich: opening hours →The ConvivaPlus verdict
Basel is the case where the hour matters more than the date. Two dates are quickly memorised; that trading starts only at 13:00 is the piece of information that decides the day — and it is missing from nearly every overview, because it sits not in a calendar but in an act.
Our recommendation: plan Basel's Advent Sunday as an afternoon, not a day. Five hours are enough for the city centre, but not for centre plus Christmas market plus a meal. And with two dates rather than four, the first should not be treated as a reserve.
Freshness note: Dates and hours come from the Office for Economy and Labour's publication of 11.02.2026. Individual shops at the station, the airport or petrol stations may open outside those times — those are Labour Act exemptions, not Sunday trading.

- ◆The morning is in the act, not at anyone's discretion. § 4a of the Basel rest-day act sets 13:00 to 18:00, and the labour inspectorate republishes the hours verbatim each year alongside the dates. In Zurich no such provision exists — there each shop decides.
- ◆Basel uses half of what federal law permits. Art. 19 para. 6 would allow four permit-free Sundays; § 4a names two. On this subject the interesting number is rarely the ceiling — but how far a canton uses it.
