Almost everywhere in Switzerland candle dipping is a one- to two-week window, run by volunteers, with closure days in the middle. In Basel it is four weeks straight, daily, in the middle of the city – and on 23 December it is the last place in the country where wax is still being dipped. The reason appears on no organiser's website: it is structural.

The event with the latest final day before Christmas: on 23 December, this is the only place in the entire survey where you can still dip a candle — the Uetliberg does run longer, but only at weekends. It is possible because the dipping here hangs on a Christmas market rather than on a volunteer team.

🔎 What sets this candle-dipping session apart
The difference is not Basel generosity but a construction: on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz the dipping hangs off a Christmas market, not off a volunteer team. A market has staff, infrastructure and an operator who unlocks every day – a neighbourhood association has people with day jobs. That is why the wax stays warm here for 28 days, while in Bern it burns for eight and in Winterthur for eleven. Anyone who does not want to plan their December dipping but simply pick it up along the way has mainly this one city in Switzerland.
That same construction has a downside, and we write it down rather than gloss over it: what is published are the market hours, not the dipping hours. The canton announces when the Christmas market is open; whether anyone will still hand you a wick at the stand at 8.15pm is written nowhere. Prices are not published for these two locations either. That is the cost of an offering being part of a market – and the reason we invent no figures here.
And Basel has something that exists nowhere else in the survey: the session in the hall of the Thomaskirche ends on Saturday in a spaghetti happening from 6pm. It is the only recorded Swiss candle-dipping session with a dinner of its own. At the Stephanus parish house, meanwhile, coloured stearin costs CHF 3.– per 100 grams – the country's lowest published wax price, level with Bern.

Der Unterschied zu anderen Städten ist, dass man hier nicht planen muss. Vier Wochen lang jeden Tag offen, mitten in der Stadt. In Bern oder Winterthur hast du acht oder elf Tage – wenn du die verpasst, war es das für ein Jahr.
Das ist genau der strukturelle Punkt: Am Barfüsserplatz hängt das Kerzenziehen am Weihnachtsmarkt, nicht an einem Freiwilligen-Team. Darum läuft es vier Wochen täglich – und als einziger Anlass der Erhebung noch am 23. Dezember. Länger am Stück ist nur das Zürcher Kerzenziehen; dafür schliesst es zwei Tage früher.
