Quick quiz

3 questions – test your knowledge

1.How many magnolia species does the Gambarogno garden have?

2.How much water do the Trümmelbach Falls carry at snowmelt?

3.At what altitude do the crocuses bloom at Rämisgummen?

💜 Crocus bloom at Rämisgummen: the purple wonder

Once a year, the Rämisgummen (1300m) in the Emmental transforms into a purple carpet. Thousands of crocuses — purple and white — cover the meadows as soon as the snow melts. This phenomenon on this scale is unique in Switzerland.

When: Late March to early April (2-3 week window). Current status at eggiwil.ch.

Getting there: Bus to Eggiwil, then hike toward Rämisgummenhoger. Crocuses also bloom at the Hahnenmoospass and Schynige Platte — but nowhere as spectacularly as here. Important: Crocuses are protected — picking them is strictly forbidden!

🌼 Narcissus fields near Montreux: white above Lake Geneva

Above Montreux, at Les Avants, the meadows transform from late April to late May into a sea of white flowers. With over 100 hectares of wild narcissus, this is one of Europe's largest floral spectacles — celebrated each May at the famous Narcissus Festival.

Getting there: MOB train from Montreux to Les Avants — the Montreux–Les Avants–Caux route already offers spectacular lake views. The marked trail winds through meadows and forest with grand views of Lake Geneva. Duration: approx. 1.5-2 hours.

Live tracking: Check narcisses.com to catch the peak.

Important: Do not pick, do not walk on the fields, dogs on leads. Narcissus are protected.

💧 Waterfalls in spring: snowmelt spectacle

Most Swiss waterfalls are most impressive in spring. Snowmelt from March to May pushes more water through the gorges than at any other time of year.

Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen: Europe's largest waterfall, snowmelt doubles the flow compared to winter, exceeding 300,000 litres per second. Entry CHF 5, children CHF 3. The boat ride to the central rock (CHF 5 extra) is worth every franc — you will get wet.

Staubbachfall in Lauterbrunnen: At 300 metres of free fall, one of Europe's highest waterfalls — most powerful in spring when glacier snow melts. Free access from the village.

Trümmelbachfälle Lauterbrunnen: 10 underground waterfalls fed by snowmelt from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. 20,000 litres per second. Opens in April. Entry CHF 15.

Giessbach Falls on Lake Brienz: 14 cascading steps over 500 metres of elevation. Free access on foot. The historic paddle steamer from Brienz adds a magical approach (CHF 5).

Gestern Giessbachfall gemacht.

Chrieseweg in Zug letztes Jahr gemacht, einfach mega. Aber 19 km sind happig, das unterschätzt man. In Walchwil beim Bäcker gibts übrigens geilen Kirschkuchen 👌
